For those who doubt it was on GMB around 8am.

I was gob smacked to say the least…

Arto1s Fri 31-Jan-25 00:58:39

If only Keir Starmer could be another Margaret Thatcher. If only….

I don't care if the cat is Tory black or Labour white so long as it catches mice. The government has displayed lack of interest in the cost of living for ordinary folk. Talking up growth and resurrecting previous grand schemes does not help us now.

If Labour supporters support Labour policies (shock, horror) they are accused of following blindly. If they say they agreed with some of what opponents did (or do) they are criticised for that. It’s almost as though balance is expected to be one-way only, isn’t it? grin

Not at all.

If I support a government policy, regardless of the colour of their rosette, I will say so.

I just find it hilarious that Margaret Thatcher is often (especially here on GN) blamed for the beginning of the UK’s downfall, and all of a sudden up pops a Labour MP praising her 🤷‍♀️

I have a soft spot for MT as when she became PM it was the first time I was old enough to vote, and I was ecstatic that we had a female leader of the U.K.

I admired her tenacity, she didn’t suffer fools, and as she said you turn if you like, this lady is not for turning ( from memory, and probably not word for word exact)

Well there we are. I have absolutely no time for Thatcher, and whilst being 100% in favour of equal rights for women I would not feel ecstatic because a woman gets a job if IMO she is not the right person (which IMO she was not).

I'd rather someone 'turned' as stuck to guns that were pointing in the wrong direction, and I don't believe that tenacity is a good thing in and of itself. Of course I can understand that if someone believes they are right they will not change position, and that MT thought she was right.

I didn't hear what JR said about MT, but I probably don't agree with him if he was praising her. That doesn't mean that I am 'gobsmacked' at the fact that people can share beliefs about some things and not others, though. I do that all the time.

Sorry, I agree with Babs comments re MT

Cossy Wed 29-Jan-25 14:17:39

I agree

Numbers at any cost it seems GG and Allira. Sod the consequences.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 29-Jan-25 14:00:06

Allira we are fighting against building on a flood plain here, our local MP (Conservative) has been brilliant over the last 10+ years, not sure she will be able to stop it now.

Our local council have thrown out the plans numerous times, but we are ready for them to be overruled by Westminster.

And I am by no means a fan so find it surprising that GMB presenters were so shocked. Perhaps is a light day for news.

Good Morning Britain.

Why do you find it shocking?

Wyllow3 I am rather confused regarding the third runway at Heathrow along with the expansion of Gatwick & Luton airports.

How does this policy fit in with the Green Agenda I was under the impression we were all meant to fly less?

Labour/Green Council wants to build hundreds of homes on land below sea level near here.
Combined with hundreds of other house building which is happening without the infrastructure to match the demands that brings, the result is an increasing nightmare.

The Green message is very confusing.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 29-Jan-25 13:48:43

Babs03 GMB is on ITV, nothing to do with GB News.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 29-Jan-25 13:43:52

You’re joking Babs03! GBNEWS televised the whole 55 minutes of Rachel Reeves’ speech this morning and trust me, there was PLENTY of discussion afterwards on that subject alone!

I don’t admire Thatcher but think she was a devoted to her position as PM and worked her socks off trying to bring about a new era for the UK which whether it was entirely successful or not, and I would say ‘not’ in many instances, she was of a very different calibre to Tory PMs for the past 14 years. A calibre I doubt we will see again in either major party.

He's not proposing any Thatcher policies, the reference was to to ability to make bold vision decisions. Have to wait for the details of Reeves speech but here so far:

As we've been reporting, chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to deliver a major speech on economic growth shortly. Here's what she is expected to bring up:
The chancellor will focus on plans aimed at "unleashing the potential of the Oxford-Cambridge growth corridor", creating a "Silicon Valley of Europe" - with hopes to add billions to the UK economy

She will also announce an agreement with water companies "to unlock £7.9bn in investment" for the next five years, aimed at improving water infrastructure - including the building of nine new reservoirs

Meanwhile the redevelopment of Old Trafford football stadium in Manchester will also get the government's backing
It will also announce its plans to review the "Green Book", which is used to evaluate big investment projects, "in order to support decisions on public investment across the country", including outside London and the south-east

The BBC understands that Reeves is expected to back Heathrow expansion plans, in a move to encourage a planning application for a third runway at the airport.

She must be at odds with Clive Lewis (Labour MP) who wants to Nationalise Thames Water and hopefully others too.. a large part of our bills at the moment go towards paying off Bank loans.. and giving these companies large grants is not the way forward..

Whaaat? The phrase ‘lost the plot’ comes to mind. I thought he despised her and took her picture down.

I wonder why you thought that. KS made it very clear that he doesn’t like portraits on his walls. Whether, incidentally, he despises MT or not has nothing to do with that, so your assumption is either in your own head or comes from the sources of your information.

My opinion about Thatcher is that whilst I abhorred most of her policies I did admire her strength of character and single mindedness when following through her aims.

She was a clear minded thinker and ruthless. Her ruthlessness was what lead both to her rise and fall.

The tv programme on, I think, Channel 4 with Steve Coogan and Harriet Walter is supposed to be very good. It’s about the interview with Brian Waldron. He and Thatcher had a mutual respect, as did Thatcher and Tony Benn. Keir has always tried to work with the opposition if it’s in the best interest of the country and that’s how politics should operate imo.

Last night Mandelson was toast, now its Rachel Reeves...

Might be a full loaf in a few months ….

Wyllow3 Wed 29-Jan-25 12:26:20

I'm waiting for a summary of the announcements rather than bits and bobs.

Rula

More coal mines were closed under Labour, post WWII

Don't get me started about Labour especially New Labour under Tony Blair.

Barleyfields Wed 29-Jan-25 11:07:58

I listened. I lost count of the number of times she said Finally’ and then dashed my hopes that she was about to stop. Her voice is just awful, and now she’s answering questions she sounds almost hysterical.
