For those who doubt it was on GMB around 8am.

I was gob smacked to say the least…

GrannyGravy13 Wed 29-Jan-25 08:56:53

For those who are unaware of GMB it’s

Good Morning Britain on ITV

Visgir1 Wed 29-Jan-25 09:28:07

And the headlines on the page of The Times reads...
"Sir Keir Starmer has compared his government to Margaret Thatcher’s as he pledges to cut through “thickets of red tape” to clear the way for growth."

nanna8 Wed 29-Jan-25 09:33:20

Whaaat? The phrase ‘lost the plot’ comes to mind. I thought he despised her and took her picture down.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 29-Jan-25 09:36:25

I haven’t had a chance to read the papers Visgirl , looks like Labour have seen the light and realised it’s blue

Wyllow3 Wed 29-Jan-25 09:38:53

Yes Visigirl that's what I picked up on. Rachel Reeves is going to make a speech on the economy at 10am this morning and the Independent reports your quote and "Chancellor promises ‘bold reform of the planning system".

I imagine Reynolds spoke on this. Tied to building more homes.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 29-Jan-25 09:50:11

Good grief! Is he sure that he is in the right party?

Grandmabatty Wed 29-Jan-25 09:51:19

Kier Starmer did move a portrait of Thatcher because it was part of a planned reorganisation started by the conservatives when in power. Irrelevant to this point really.
I think it is a good thing if opposing politicians can comment favourably on others. Sadly it's a skill lacking in many these days.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:01:26

He's not proposing any Thatcher policies, the reference was to to ability to make bold vision decisions. Have to wait for the details of Reeves speech but here so far:

As we've been reporting, chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to deliver a major speech on economic growth shortly. Here's what she is expected to bring up:
The chancellor will focus on plans aimed at "unleashing the potential of the Oxford-Cambridge growth corridor", creating a "Silicon Valley of Europe" - with hopes to add billions to the UK economy

She will also announce an agreement with water companies "to unlock £7.9bn in investment" for the next five years, aimed at improving water infrastructure - including the building of nine new reservoirs

Meanwhile the redevelopment of Old Trafford football stadium in Manchester will also get the government's backing
It will also announce its plans to review the "Green Book", which is used to evaluate big investment projects, "in order to support decisions on public investment across the country", including outside London and the south-east

The BBC understands that Reeves is expected to back Heathrow expansion plans, in a move to encourage a planning application for a third runway at the airport.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:04:15

Wyllow3 I am rather confused regarding the third runway at Heathrow along with the expansion of Gatwick & Luton airports.

How does this policy fit in with the Green Agenda I was under the impression we were all meant to fly less?

I wholeheartedly agree! Lots of them are quite friendly outside the HoC.

If anyone of any political party does something positive and/or innovative, then the “grown up” stance is to respect and admire it.

A planned reorganisation of paintings?
Pull the other one😂
If Starmer didn’t like the portrait frowning down on him that was his decision to move it, pure and simple.

Oreo Wed 29-Jan-25 10:12:50

At least Thatcher had clear goals and a vision and principles and stuck by them, which is why many admired her even if they disagreed politically.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:14:27

I don't understand the full debate on the runway GG3 because it's been controversial for years.

Various arguments have been - necessary for economy growth - stops planes circling waiting for landing - new aeroplanes are greener - but still will have impact - local concerns

If he had really admired Thatcher, I would not have been surprised in the least.

Starmer removed all political portraits - this is an old one - he has chosen instead other sorts of paintings including on loan pictures from National Gallery

Interesting 🧐
Why move all of them I wonder.

ronib Wed 29-Jan-25 10:20:18

The tractors are out in force today for Rachel in Oxford. Must be nice to have a welcoming committee every where she goes from now on. Time/cue for … this lady’s not for turning speech? Honk honk ….

Whitewavemark2 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:22:38

I think that the OP is getting a tad over excited😄

GrannyGravy13 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:24:03

I am interested to hear what RR has to say about creating a silicone valley between Oxford and Cambridge.

As I understand it we have an established one by the M4 corridor.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:25:01

Anyone listening to Rachel Reeves’ ‘Plan for Growth’ speech right now? She’s been talking for 25 minutes so far.

I don't.

I saw the interview as well. I thought Richard Madeley and Susannah were about to pass out.
