I would highly recommend todays “The Rest is Politics” 29/01/25. Podcast

Warning it is grim and chilling

Allira I have stopped taking N & P threads seriously, there appears to be an outbreak of mass hysteria across the majority of them.

imaround Sat 01-Feb-25 17:31:50

88 FBI agents have been fired and escorted out of the building. These are the agents who worked to build cases against the Jan 6th insurrectionists. They were fired for doing their jobs.

Anonymous federal employees are starting to leak info to the press. Musk is telling employees that their social media posts are being monitored and that they could be fired for talking about their jobs or to the press.

No, not to be taken seriously at all!

Well, some posts are informative and sensible.

Keep on posting imaround.
This all sounds really sinister.

JD Vance has now said Rory Stewart has a low IQ when it comes to religion. How can anyone think that Rory has a low IQ?

And how can your IQ be specifically related to religion!

He was referring to his understanding of religion. I think. No tarrifs for the UK yet? Then again he will be using the NHS as a bargaining tool with us I assume?

I suspect Vance doesn't have a grasp on differences to Evangelical Christians and Catholics - Vance seemed to be saying Rory didn't understand religion, daft really.

Thank you imaround. We don’t get to know any of this in the UK!

“Mass hysteria” GrannyGravy13?

"President Donald Trump on Saturday removed Rohit Chopra as the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, setting in motion a potentially landmark shift at one of the nation’s most powerful consumer watchdog agencies."
"In a public letter released Saturday, Chopra acknowledged only that his leadership had “concluded,” as he looked to highlight how the CFPB worked to thwart scams, crack down on Big Tech, ensure consumer access to banking and safeguard Americans from corporate abuse. "

The above is a couple of passages from the Washington Post, so who is going to protect American consumers? Not Trump or Musk, I fear.

Truly terrifying just how quickly a supposedly democratic country can break down. Thank you for your insider updates imaround

Not seen any "mass hysteria" GG13 just a lot of genuine concern about the future of the US with Trump at it's head.

DT is the democratically elected POTUS

Whether or not we agree with his policies or not is irrelevant, enough of the electorate in the USA did to put their X against his name/party

AGAA4 Sat 01-Feb-25 18:51:46

Just because he has been elected doesn't mean people shouldn't be concerned about what he is doing.

MayBee70 Sat 01-Feb-25 18:53:13

Are you implying that imaround is being hysterical at seeing what is happening to her country?

imaround Sat 01-Feb-25 18:59:32

They have taken down over 1,000 pages of scientific data from the CDC website. Random citizens and scientists have been working this week to download and archive the data.

Did you all know that Kansas has the largest tuberculosis outbreak in recorded US history right now? Nope? Because all federal agencies have been told not to communicate externally.

We have no idea what the status of bird flu is right now.

There are at least 3 states that have put forth guidelines that Evolution will no longer be taught in schools.

Not at all, her posts appear to be well informed.

Only 30% of eligible voters voted for Trump.

30%

I don't care if anyone thinks I am being hysterical. People who think so can make the choice to close the thread and move on to a more comfortable place.

This is happening. Turning it off won't make it go away. And while it is majorly affecting rhe US right now, it will soon start to affect other countries as well, including the UK.

The entire world needs to know these details. Musk had access to trillions of our Federal money right now, but he had already shown interest in moving on to the UK and Reform next.

Unfortunately he's not acting democratically and at least three of his current executive orders are unconstitutional (probably far more). What Trump does in the US has consequences for the wider world, so I don't see that it is "irrelevant" for us to have concerns. That's my POV, I'm more than happy for you to have a different one.

He is starting to go after Consumer Financial Protection now. This branch of the government protects consumers against big businesses taking advantage.

amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/02/01/business/rohit-chopra-cfpb-trump

Interestingly enough, there is a unrelated case happening right now where the feds (Biden feds) are arguing that the feds can seize money. They argue that because the government creates money, people and businesses cant own money.

This particular case had to do with fines on a business I believe, but it is setting the ground rules.

Does that mean we shouldn't comment?

If Musk can fire off tweets or whatever they're called now about our democratically elected LP and Keir Starmer to an audience of millions, I'm sure a few older ladies on Gransnet can have an opinion on Trump.

LisaAN Sat 01-Feb-25 19:48:48

I believe a certain dictator in the 1930s Germany was democratically elected? I could of course be wrong …

If there is any hysteria - it's not coming from you.

Please keep posting, and giving the links.

Who decides anyway? It's a subjective opinion.

Politics by its very nature is a divisive subject matter and can generate strong emotions, which is why it's usually avoided around polite dinner-tables. But we're on a News & Politics forum so if anyone feels it's all a bit too much, they can skip over it, can't they?

Canada is reporting that Trump has authorized 10% tariff on energy and a 25% tariff on everything else, set to go into effect on Tuesday.

Trudeau is expected to speak at 6 pm. It is being reported that Trump has already said if Canada retaliated, he will increase the tariffs.

So we get to look forward to a trade war starting on Tuesday.

No word on Mexico or the EU tariffs yet.

Wyllow3 Sat 01-Feb-25 21:28:02

Thank you again, imaround, these pieces of the jigsaw shows a shocking deliberate taking apart of a democracy.

“Mass hysteria” GrannyGravy13?

I assume GrannyGravy means on Gransnet as hyperbole is evident in some posts.
I could be wrong of course.

imaround's posts from the USA, in contrast, seem measured and informative whilst managing to convey the fear that many Americans are feeling right now.
