I had listened to this episode and found it a hard listen but AC and RS bring such a great deal of knowledge to their podcasts that make it's well worth the effort.
For those who would rather read, you can click on "Show Transcript" under the small screen when you first go to it. It is automated and at the same speed as the conversation so you may need to stop the video from time to time if you want to re-read.
There are quite a few American's commenting underneath too.

I think you have misunderstood what a democracy is like, yes a leader can be voted in, but that doesn't then bar anyone from critisizing said leader and even taking to the streets and protesting if they so wish. We all have democratic rights that don't end when a leader is elected.
Even in sport - when the other side wins and you lose - there's often a discussion afterward (football) analysing why a particular team lost or won!
... but when a political party wins - and their policies are going to affect millions of people, perhaps also in other nations, we're supposed to simply "get over it"?
Trump has won the trust of millions of Americans, and is now one of the world's most powerful leaders.
... and we're being told basically to not talk about it! Laughable!

Just found myself listening to Trump on BBC news channel - what a relief to turn off the sound!

Is anyone else reminded of the poem by Martin Noimiller, which begins
" They came for the socialists, but I did nothing.."?
Yes totally. Those supporting Trump now because of draconian measures should be aware that their turn will also come.
There's something missing from that list that is included in my post Wed 29-Jan-25 17:53:11 and that is the last line ie
Fraudulent elections!

It's "fortress America", which is very, very sad really, that we have a regime that doesnt want to try and "join in" for the sake of all... and drill baby drill environment wise.
He has left the World Health Organisation and because USA used to donate a large part of their funding he has now put that organisation in jeopody. This has huge implications for the world..
One of my SiLs works for a UK based business that goes into big businesses/coroporations and runs workshops on diversity in the workplace and how to eradicate or deal effectively with sexual harrassment/racism/ableism etc., with ongoing support/advice. They had a base in the US but that has now closed down and businesses/corporations have been advised that if they run these workshops or do any inhouse training at all Trump will make sure they are penalised for doing so.
I imagine there will be those crying WOKE who feel this isn't such a bad thing, until the working practices in these businesses/corporations become so bad for everyone regardless of who they are, that it is no longer tolerable.
This video is only a 2min 40 sec watch but vividly sums up Trumps first week and actions

We do indeed foxie48. How long will it be before he curtails the freedom of the press I wonder.
There was a hint of it when the press secretary Leavitt gave her first presentation.
She said in replying to a question, yes she will tell the truth but there would be consequences if the press person didn't (ie not allowed to further briefings).
In terms of why write about him, amongst others reasons, its because some of his policies are in favour with the far right in Europe and we can see how they work out.

Sorry, that remark is both rude and so ignorant.
Aside from that many of us, me included, have close family and friends living in the USA and we are rightfully concerned.
Trump is a loose canon and a dictator, not what anyone needs running one of world’s most powerful nations.
No Cossy, my remark is neither rude or ignorant. You are the one who is being insulting. Trump has won and there is nothing you can do about it. I cannot stand Starmer but accept that he’s in for the next few years. Constantly banging on about how bad Trump is won’t make him go away.
Get over it.

It's both rude and ignorant.
We are debating the matter - as is much of the rest of the world that might be affected by the new administration's economic and foreign policies.
You chose the phrase "banging on" deliberately to goad those you don't agree with.
... or perhaps you don't understand how a News & Politics forum works?

Further to my earlier post regarding TRIP, just listen to 1.40 - 6.06 if you want to know why some of us are worried by Trump.

I think that has to be the most pointless comment on GN to date on this subject.

That's an interesting read Casdon and it covers some of the points raised in the TRIP podcast. We live in very worrying times.
He did win, Nonnato2. Lots of people are struggling to " get over it", at home and abroad, as his behaviours and policies alarm them: they do me
I’ve just read this analysis on CNN.
edition.cnn.com/2025/01/29/politics/donald-trump-funding-freeze-analysis/index.html
Great concern is being felt in USA about the way Trump is wielding power, so why you are trying to shut down discussion on this forum about what’s happening I really don’t understand Nonnato2. There are plenty of threads on here bemoaning Starmer, and if people want to bemoan Trump on this thread, they will.

It said in the podcast that even Hitler found reasons for what he was doing, even if he fabricated them himself, but that the phone call Trump made to the PM of Denmark was without historical precedent. And the sort of action he threatens would mean that other countries could just take over other countries purely because they had the power to do so.

Do some research. There's plenty of evidence,*Wyllow3*
I don’t agree. All world leaders will be seen to work with him because it’s their job to do so.
