Not such shocking news as the right-wing would have you believe

Remember the so called “shocking news” from the right wing media about the level of immigrants in our towns and cities.

Guess what - all lies.

“The right-wing press got itself in hot water this week over a deeply misleading statistic that claimed one in twelve Londoners is an undocumented migrant. It was originally published in the Telegraph, but was uncritically re-printed and repeated across the entire media ecosystem from the Times, to the Mail to GBNews.
The claim, as many Londoners could immediately tell, is completely false. The study in question, commissioned by Thames Water, included immigrants with Indefinite Leave to Remain and tourists among the supposed irregular migrant population. Furthermore, it put that inflated figure into a deflated figure for the population of London of around seven million, instead of the nearly nine million it actually is. The resulting findings obviously have no credibility at all.
But the wild claim did what it was supposed to. You can see the purpose of it in the Telegraph’s very own sub-heading: ‘New research adds to fears over borders and increased pressure on public services’. You bet it does: exactly as it was intended to. As the IPSO complaints, corrections and withdrawals roll in, we know the number of people even clocking the corrections at all must be a tiny fraction of those reached by the original headlines.
Baseless scaremongering about undocumented migrants is a tactic copied directly from the Trump playbook by the British anti-migrant right. They are keen to promote a “mass deportations” agenda just like his. But deportations are no answer to the real problem of undocumented migrants in this country, and as usual the alternative, workable and humane solutions are not getting anything like the same airtime.”

By-line Times

Don’t allow them to push a Trump agenda.

Oreo I’d simply call the mass of DM readers, like Telegraph, are right-wing. Some of them are far-right, most of them I would surmise are simply right wing

I read different papers in different days, no pattern or reason, curtesy of the library app.

Politically homeless, never been extreme.

I cannot be the only one…

Can you explain how the Labour Party won so many seats when The Daily Mail has the largest circulation of any uk newspaper?
I put it down to the fact that the general public aren’t as swayed by newspapers as you think.

M0nica I think you are missing the point.

The overseas workers who are here have been through a rigorous vetting system, are paying tax and NI and are known

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being concerned about those who are here under the radar (illegally) the authorities do not know the numbers, who they are and in most cases where they come from.

These are likely to be stuck with gang masters in what is basically modern day slavery, I am not happy with this situation, are you?

I agree Grannygravy13

It seems to me that not many people seem concerned about modern day slavery, about those who did come here illegally and are working, under the radar, unknown to the authorities. They were, presumably, sold the idea of a better life (at great financial cost to them and/or their families) and are now working in poor conditions with no access to healthcare and probably paying off debts to slave masters.

Does no-one care about them? Are you happy about this situation as long as some of the goods and services you use are cheap?

I think it's pretty shocking too, it's racist. It uses that ridiculous concept, "the indigenous white population". "Us and them" yet again.

Claremont - Try reading WhitewaveMark 2 comment. They said exactly that. Hence, my alternate comment. I wonder why you did not pick that out?

Primrose I wouldn't trust statistics/info from Migration Watch because of the inherent bias.

M0nica Sat 01-Feb-25 08:43:31

Not all DT or DM readers are rightwing. I am not sure that anyone would accuse me of being right wing, yet I quite frequently read both. We buy several papers from both sides of the divide.

The other thing is count out the politics, and the quality of journalism and wide variety of articles they both publish on a wide range of other tpoics is so much wider and better than other more self-righteous newspapers.

You may not count yourself as right wing, MOnica, but I think your last sentence displays an interesting bias.

Me neither.

This wiki article reveals Migration Watch's controversial origins and practices.

It's partly in existence to provide statistics but also briefing papers which are political opinions. ie non neutral) It is against the ECHR.

Every single right wing paper has had to withdraw and apologise for the article concerning the immigration misinformation or lies.

Attached is the mail, but The Sun, DT, and Times have all withdrawn their article

Rubbish! Migration Watch Chairman, Alp Mehmet, is originally from Cyprus and worked as an Immigration Officer and Diplomat. People use the word “racist” to try to close down discussion.

Another ethnic minority ambassador for MW is Anwar Choudhury who is of Bangladeshi origin. He worked for the Diplomatic service, MOD and the High Commission of Bangladesh.

They are a very well respected organisation with massive experience and reliable statistics.

I think they know rather more than most on here do about immigration.

bathsalts Sat 01-Feb-25 16:40:38

Is there anything called ExPat Watch?

Allira Sat 01-Feb-25 16:47:30

The ethos and views of Migration Watch seem to be fairly sensible and well-thought through. Welcoming managed migration and genuine refugees.

Just because those on the left, including The Guardian, think it is right-wing doesn't mean to say it is.

M0nica Sat 01-Feb-25 19:26:33

Better use the statistics coming from the Migration Observatory migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/ , part of Oxford University, and as neutral an impartial as it is possible to be. But its name makes it easy to confuse with Migration Watch.

Most Unis are full of overseas students who make up the majority of immigrants to this country through an initiative set up by no other than Boris Johnson himself.

Just had a good look at the site - excellent, do look, make wn minds up and answers tough questions, and doesn't offer opinions as Migration watch does like they did before the Brexit referendum (when they reassured us that immigration would come down 💁 and recommend leaving the ECHR which is a clear political stance.

I agree and I often skim straight past certain threads, other ones need a comment I find.

I'm sure it's just your way of phrasing it, but actually although you may feel compelled to comment (I frequently feel the same) - it does sound a bit arrogant to say a thread "needs" your comment - there are plenty sensible people here to share opinions, yours is welcome but in no way neccessary?

Oh for heavens sake Primrose that is a ridiculous thing to say. Of course there are some academics and students who espouse radical poiltics and make a lot of noise, they have always been there and always done it, they were there in the early 1960s when I was at university, but the vast, quiet majority of academics are working to educate young people and do research that is honest and unbiassed.
