All Saints Catholic high school. A 14 year old boy stabbed the 15 year old at the school gates. Two truly devastated families. One boy dead, not coming home from school with his mates at 4pm now and I imagine the 14 year old lad terrified, sobbing his eyes out in a police station, as the enormity of his red mist action hammers home to him. Arrested on suspicion of murder.

Isn’t it worth it to save lives rafichagran?

Of course I want to save lives, but a whole group of people should not be discriminated against to do this. I don't see how you can justify the upset of these kids.

I can justify it by getting weapons off the streets. Black and brown kids aren’t the only ones who are stopped.

I worked with a police officer who had served with the drug squad. He told me about an initiative they'd run where they'd gone into schools, got to know the kids, did talks illustrating the dangers of drugs. Apparently it got pulled when the problem got worse in the schools they were in. They thought all the talk of drugs had just spiked the interest of kids who'd never done them.

Sometimes you just can't win.

Many schools in areas of high deprivation have a resident police officer. They can do good work with some young people and of course, have powers of arrest.

I share the feelings of FGT and others, there are two heart broken families here. The uk seems to top the European leagues for drug/alcohol dependence and its associated problems. Put that with parents who have no respect for authority and wouldn’t know a boundary children need to thrive, if one ran them over
Sorry to be so negative

Knives are easily accessible and there are ways of avoiding being caught with them.
I was walking the dog in our local park and saw something sticking up from the grass. It was a knife. I phone the police who collected it and the policewoman said this was a common occurrence. The knives were left to be picked up later.
Surely this should be a matter for a cross party group.

I can imagine police on duty at school gates, but that doesn't protect further.

I cant help but want to know what triggered this particular incident. Not for any prudish nasty reason but to understand the "Why" which may be helpful in preventing incidents.

Thanks.
It's a sorry state of affairs when the police cannot be trusted to be even handed, respectful, and generally above reproach.

Isthethe girl who was stripped and subjected to what amounts as sexual assault by the police?
Bloody disgraceful.

"A date is still to be set for a disciplinary hearing that could result in three Metropolitan police officers being sacked for their alleged part in the strip-search of an innocent child in December 2020".
2024

As far as I know the disciplinary hearing over charges of gross misconduct has not yet taken place.

A number of the recent stabbings, including the one yesterday, have taken place outside the school building, which is another challenge. If pupils are excluded from school, they can lie in wait and stab their victim(s) in the school grounds or the street. It would be a big step forward if schools were secured and people were not allowed out during school hours, but a solution for excluded pupils is also needed I think.

I entirely agree GG. If someone isn’t carrying a weapon or drugs, why would they object to being searched?

Get rid of the discrimination and I might agree with you, butI am worried they will target more black kids. This would only lead to resentment.

Barleyfields Tue 04-Feb-25 11:35:02

It was the same for me. When my son was at school they could come and go at will. I think that’s wrong. They should remain on the school premises for the entire school day unless they have written permission to leave for a specific reason. I doubt many go home for lunch these days.

As long as the police aren't over-zealous as they were in the case of the schoolgirl who was strip searched by police without an adult present. Teachers thought she was carrying cannabis and called the police. The girl, aged 15, was pulled out of an exam to be searched without another adult present.
She was then expected to go back into the exam and carry on as if nothing had happened.
No drugs were found.

Some sort of scanner?
I don't know how these things work.

Essex Police have got a couple of mobile knife arches, which are used as and when.

They were deployed last summer along the seafront, and are also used at the main two stations when they have tip offs regarding London gangs coming down.

Allira Tue 04-Feb-25 11:31:19

I know it was a long time ago, but when I was at school, no-one was allowed out of school at lunch-time without the written permission of a parent if they were going home for lunch. Very few did that, in fact I only remember about two who did.

Now children just wander out of school to the local chippy at lunch-time and seem to just please themselves.

Scanners, as in airports.

Probably at home, not suspecting in their wildest dreams that their child is capable, I'd imagine.

Very likely.

In theory, it would be good if all school bags could be checked, but personal searches would be required for knives. In schools of up to 1500 students who and how could this possibly be carried out? Over the whole country?

MissAdventure Tue 04-Feb-25 11:23:11

It used to be almost entirely black teens that could be stopped- in lots of cases, many times.
Almost as a means of just making life difficult for them.

I’m all in favour of stop and search too. It’s the BME communities who complain most vociferously about it, but too bad. If it gets knives and other weapons and drugs off the street it’s a good thing.

They complain because more black kids are stopped and searched by the Police.
My partner is West Indian and when stop and search was implemented he knew so many black kids this happened too. Unless we get rid of the racism, no I am not in favour.

Sorry, but if stop and search of anyone whatever their colour prevents one death it is worth it.
