How hypocritical of Kier Starmer to have had a voice coach over for lessons during
Tier 4 lockdowns on Christmas Eve!

I am absolutely raging mad that I stuck fast to these lockdown rules, that I hardly saw my parents during these lockdowns, didn’t notice my dad’s dementia because mum always came to the door, couldn’t attend my Aunts funeral, ended up with severe depression & he’s got the gall to put this woman down as a key worker, I thought that was for emergency services, care workers, & shop staff?
What was so urgent that he needed a voice coach on Christmas Eve, he wasn’t even PM?
To think that they gave BJ so much flack, it’s truly unbelievable 😩

You can always use the defence of having been a key worker GG. If it applies to an actress/voice coach it can apply to anyone.

As Iam points out, KS was a key worker, so would, of course, be attending work. My work has staff development training all the time. People attend during working hours, and some of it is mandatory.

I'm waiting to see the outcome of any prosecution before leaping to judgement, but legalities aside, what I'm seeing is the usual knee-jerk reactions, language such as 'trotting out' (have we had 'bleating' yet?) and personal comments about Starmer's voice. Surely if you are leader of the opposition, aware that your voice is holding you back , and you know that an election is in the offing you would take steps to correct that? His team will be aware of the sort of comments we get on here, and the even worse ones on other SM, so taking steps sounds perfectly valid to me, but of course the 'balanced' view is that if Labour do something it is all kinds of wrong, but when the Tories do it it is excusable.

Margaret Thatcher had voice coaching, incidentally.

The question, I think, is around whether the classes were 'essential' given the vague and ever-changing diktats of the time. I couldn't possibly say, but I expect that an inquiry (should there be a need for one - I'd be surprised if this wasn't all throughly vetted at the time) will determine this, as the people involved will have actual facts, rather than gossip and speculation, at their disposal.

Re Zoom - my (admittedly limited) knowledge of voice coaching suggests that the coach needs to touch the chest and abdomen to teach breathing techniques, and that there is other physical contact - the voice is part of the body and can't be accessed remotely.

We had cake in our office during Covid, perhaps I should turn myself in?

Primrose53 Tue 04-Feb-25 09:27:46

Labour made weeks and weeks of micky taking about Boris and co during Covid but they were just as bad if not worse. They just managed to keep it quieter!

Like the Leicester MP who was caught travelling across Leicester to his girlfriend on the other side. He stayed several days but that was OK because she had broken her window!! 🤣🤣 and she needed him to fix it for her.

Mt61 Tue 04-Feb-25 09:26:41

Where is the proof BJ had lots of parties?
Apart from the one where the staff & BJ were also working at 10 Downing Street.
It’s seems to me one rule for labour & one rule for any other party!

Barleyfields Tue 04-Feb-25 09:25:56

No way was she a key worker. Obviously they are not denying that this ā€˜meeting’ took place. She and Starmer should be investigated for this in the same way Labour ensured Boris was. Sauce for the goose …

Why did she travel from Brighton to London on Christmas Eve?
To pick up her Christmas bonus in person maybe?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 04-Feb-25 09:23:15

Whatever coaching he’s had he needs a few more sessions in my opinion. That nasal twang gets me every time.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 04-Feb-25 09:16:33

Well the Labour Health Minister was interviewed this morning on the news.

She trotted out the line that the lady voice coach was a key worker…

Why did she travel from Brighton to London on Christmas Eve?

If the UK’s children were able to be educated over zoom/teams why was KS unable to have voice coaching on similar?

I am disappointed with this Labour cohort they were so keen to jump on the Conservatives for every misdemeanour (and rightly so) they must have realised that they would also be put under the spotlight…

nanna8, the last priority I look for in a PM is his/ her ability to inspire and captivate an audience. I am not an audience, I am a citizen of this country.
For inspiration and captivaton I visit the theatre.

Barleyfields Tue 04-Feb-25 09:07:23

I wonder if Lord Ali paid for it …

Not much of a barrister if incapable of clear diction.

Well, I was about to say that, as a barrister used to public speaking, surely he didn't need a voice coach when he became Leader of the Opposition?

Maggiemaybe Mon 03-Feb-25 23:41:50

The very first priority, on choosing a PM, should be whether they are able to inspire and captivate an audience

Should it really? confused I can think of quite a number of murderous dictators who scored very highly on that front.

keepingquiet Mon 03-Feb-25 22:33:24

Is it April 1st?

Barleyfields Mon 03-Feb-25 22:28:33

Fabricated, PoliticsNerd?

nanna8 Mon 03-Feb-25 22:25:41

The very first priority, on choosing a PM, should be whether they are able to inspire and captivate an audience. What happened? I listened to a speech he once made before he was PM. Much better, slightly more ā€˜alive’. I think he is entitled to to a refund from his speech coach.

She wasn’t though Iam64

Who says she wasn't and where can we find it.

Seriously, a Times and Sunday Times journalist write a book that attempts to resurrect the tactics used by the last government by suggesting that Starmer broke Covid rules five years ago.

This is in no way comparable to Boris Johnson, who was the one flouting the rules while supposedly leading the country. Are most people really that bothered by yet another fabricated attempt to challenge Starmer's clear belief in the legitimate authority of the law?"

They made so much of Borris meeting people he was working with anyway and the pictures of Starmer having a drink at an event so called brushed under the carpet What is the difference labour don't get investigated To be honest if people were working together can't see the problem with them having a drink together it was obviously ok for labour but it's one rule for them

ā€œDo as I say, not as I doā€, comes to mind

Barleyfields Mon 03-Feb-25 21:22:30

If I were Starmer I would ask for my money back. He has as much charisma as a dead fish.

escaped Mon 03-Feb-25 21:19:42

Apparently the coach specialises in "personal impact skills". That is, the mark that you leave on people after an interaction. Not what you say, but how you carry yourself and present yourself to others and how you make them feel.
A bit like charisma, I guess?
Yet Keir Starmer insists that, as a person, he has nothing in common with Boris Johnson who built his career on that!

pascal30 Mon 03-Feb-25 21:13:03

Well it didn't work did it.. He has the most monotonous voice..

How do you know this is true? Where is your information from?

You certainly just seem to want to be angry but raving mad? Be kinder to yourself.

The Independent thinks it’s true.

That article doesn't state that it's true. It quotes the book and in both the headline and text says that Starmer denies he broke lockdown rules.

This issue has been raised by Richard Holden, an ex Tory MP with previous form of alleging (unsuccessfully) that Starmer broke lockdown rules.

Mollygo Mon 03-Feb-25 20:52:38

Sorry Petra
I fear we’re about to told that the Independent doesn’t meet the approval of Labour Supporters.
