Farage. Well he’s Top of the Pops right now! 😂

This tonight, from the ‘i’ newspaper (that I also now subscribe to, not just The Telegraph!) ….

“Nigel Farage stood up at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday to hostile silence. Squashed together in the Commons, MPs from other parties glowered at him, and then delighted as he appeared to fluff his lines when asking a question about the Chagos Islands.

Behind the scenes it is a different story, with individual MPs from other parties queuing up to ask the Reform UK leader to sign House of Commons wine bottles and drinks coasters for family members and constituents who are fans of his brand of straight-talking populism. It’s not clear whether those MPs acknowledge the cognitive dissonance involved.

There’s no doubt Reform is having a moment. On average, the last half-dozen polls have put the party on 25 per cent, putting it equal first with Labour. Three of those polls put the party in the lead, either solely or in tandem with Labour.

It’s causing tangible jitters among both Labour and Conservative MPs. At PMQs, Farage accused them of “panic.”

This week a group of around 40 Labour MPs from “Red Wall” seats in the north of England called for Sir Keir Starmer to send a stronger message on immigration as they seek to see off the threat from Farage and his crew ahead of local elections in May.

Behind the scenes, other Labour MPs have requested training sessions from No 10 on how to deal with Reform in their areas. “It really troubles them,” a Labour source said.”

C’mon REFORM!

Just because they arrive in boats doesn't mean they are not entitled to being here having fled for their lives.

However if the irregular migrants arriving on rubber boats are unskilled and end up net recipients of benefit UK how on earth will this help our economy?

I also believe Reform will pull out of the ECHR. Ergo - no international treaty will be broken by returning boat people.

Unskilled immigrants could do the 21% of unskilled jobs that were done by EU immigrants before Farage's Brexit.

There are 800,000 job vacancies in Britain.

EU immigrants were net contributors to the Britain.

Why would a political party want to pull out of a convention designed to protect human rights? There can't be an altruistic reason for that surely.

Exactly there are jobs enough - we just need to get the migrants to a position where they can take them.

The Times to-day.

On Monday, Sir Keir Starmer will try something new. The prime minister will attempt to get on the front foot over immigration, taking the fight to Reform and Nigel Farage directly.

Labour will publish a series of videos showing the “journey” of an illegal immigrant, from detention in early morning raids to transfer from bleak immigration removal centres to waiting planes and — subject to approval — footage aboard flights out of the country.

The party has also run adverts with Reform-style branding and messaging to accompany them. The adverts do not display Labour’s logo and are in a similar shade of blue to that used by Nigel Farage’s party.

Rupert Lowe is a climate change denier.

Personally I believe the problem re immigration is that we should be processing them a lot quicker. With birthrates falling and the population getting older these people are necessary join the workforce and pay taxes.

Reform UK:
Every time I listen to Rupert Lowe I'm impressed! I love that he is the only MP in the entire house who gives his salary to charity. He speaks brilliantly and honestly on every issue.
The kind of politician we used to have, when people genuinely cared about the country and its people.

Easy to do when you are worth 30 million.

So you think they should just queue jump then ?

I didn't write that.

Probably do what we do- turn them back. It may or may not breach some sort of international law but too bad. It will save lives for one thing and help the poor people who are genuine and have had to wait in a queue. Don’t you kind of feel sorry for them when they have gone through the ‘right’ channels and waited a long time ? Or do you prefer people to just rock up and queue jump ?

For most of these people there isn't a right channel. There is no system in place for applying for asylum from their own country. Eritreans, for example, aren't allowed to hold their own passports and can only leave the country legally in exceptional circumstances.

Article 19 of UNCLOS says that if a foreign vessel enters another country's territorial waters it will be considered to be prejudicial to the peace if it engages in the loading or unloading of any person contrary to the immigration laws of that country.

Migrants cannot be returned to French shores, unilaterally, and without prior agreement with France.

In 2019, France and the UK agreed on a joint plan to tackle irregular migration which does provide for cooperation, but it DOES NOT allow one country to bring people rescued in the English Channel to the other country's ports.

This has all been explained here many times.

Ys, its a key Reform "policy" and yet it cannot be done - yet people believe it.

Looking forward to any explanation how Reform intend to "stop the small boats" as its a key policy platform.

Doodledog I agree with your assessment, and if people see the wrongs in society they will let politicians know in the only way they can, in the voting booth. Both the Conservatives and the Labour Party need to heed the rise of the Reform Party and ask themselves what they need to do in order not to be left behind.
On the immigration subject, tho we have always welcomed genuine asylum seekers and need workers, the numbers have increased to such an extent that all political parties know it has to be reduced.Labour is working on it but unless they succeed in the next few years then Reform will be replacing them.

I think what I said feeds into the immigration subject though. When people are resentful they often look for leaders who appear to offer solutions, and if they feel downtrodden they look for people to look down on, and to blame for their feelings. Immigrants fit that bill, even when they aren’t responsible for any of it. Nobody wants to think they are at the bottom of the pile.

I’d support and vote for any party who’d patrol the Kent cost 24/7.
Any boat entering our shores illegally would be sent back from where it came immediately.
Anyone already in this country Illegally rounded up & deported.
That’s what this country needs.

" rounded up" what a hideous phrase. What fuels this hatred for other people I wonder, I suppose I'll never know.

Good God, it’s not a hatred of people. It’s her love for her country….
It’s very obvious on this thread that the ones who can’t stand Nigel Farage spout the most vitriol..🤨

One of the things I love about this country is that it's such a rich and varied place to live because of the people who have lived here and arrived here since time immemorial. From the Vikings via the Hugenots to the Polish prisoners of war to the family who lived next door to us when I was growing up who had fled from Idi Amin.

The rounding up comments evoke some of the worst events of the last century.

Well, I dislike the phrase too.

However, putting the Vikings via the Hugenots to the Polish prisoners of war to the family who lived next door to us when I was growing up who had fled from Idi Ami in the same category is stereotyping very different groups of people who came here for different reasons.

Yet another thread started which has brought out the very worst in some members. Congratulations.

Gosh, this thread has become a tad heated since I was here earlier. I’m glad my son came for dinner and conversation (which was rather more polite than some of the comments on here) and I’ve only just come back but I think I’ll depart to another, more congenial thread.

A van in the next village had a Golliwog in a noose hanging from the dashboard. My daughter says a similar van had 'wog' and 'paki' scrawled on the back, which she wiped off. This is the sort of thing that's happening in this country these days. Now that's what I call offensive and don't tell me that Reform don't encourage that sort of behaviour. Just look at the Ch 4 video of them campaigning.

It’s nothing to do with hatred or lack of compassion, stop being so ridiculously over dramatic - sending people back to France, in a boat safer than the one they tried to enter our country illegally in, is a perfectly ok solution. Unless you think France is a terrible place to be?

Stop trying to slither out of it.

You are not about sending people back in a safe vessel. You are talking about rounding up. It's disgusting.

Please stop being offensive bathsalts.
