We Need Identity Cards

I wouldn’t object, it seems to work well in Europe where many countries have had them for years.

I think it was when we first had to produce ID in order to vote it became a no-brainer for me.
The nonsense and illogicality of what constituted ID , effectively disenfranchising young people with only a Student ID card just highlighted it all the more.
The need to show a passport for domestic flights is another example- why should somebody who has no intention of leaving the UK have to go to the trouble and expense of a passport just to fly to Edinburgh?
We all carry loyalty cards, bank cards, driving licences(where applicable) railcards(ditto) bus passes (ditto ) I can see no ideological objection to a national ID card.

Veterans cards, issued by the Government and requiring a photo, were not considered to be sufficient for ID at the last General Election!

Maybe I should say identity cards are potentially divisive.

I wonder to what degree the condition of the UK now resembles a state of war when identity cards would be justifiable.

There is too much scare -mongering about immigrants and too little information about immigrants. I guess that scare stories about immigrants are based on fears deliberately planted in the media by right wing interests .Devorgilla mentions "yellow stars", and the yellow stars worn by Jews is an example of Nazi politics to shape public opinion.

I doubt ID cards would have much impact on managing immigration. There are plenty of EU and other countries with ID cards which have immigration problems.

I have commented this but no one likes reading that their good idea has been proven not to work elsewhere.

As has been mentioned a few times, not everyone drives or has done or intends to and ditto with passports.
So..what is there that proves their identity?

The Post Office Pass Card. Any age can apply, you don't need existing photo ID, it's approved by the Home Office and costs £15.00.

I hate the thought of identity cards as it reminds me of yellow stars, pink triangles etc. I believe you should be able to go about your own country without let or hinderance as long as you obey the laws and act in an appropriate manner.
Having said that, we live in modern times and, if we do go down the road of ID cards, then should we put on them every way you can be identified? Would a government be neglectful if it didn't use every aid at its disposal? So fingerprints, eyes, DNA etc? The very though sends shivers down my spine but are we headed that way? The kids I taught, well-versed in their Bible, would be telling me it was the mark of the Beast, Miss.

I would worry about fake ID cards which these days would look very convincing. Years ago kids used to manufacture them so they could get alcohol. If even kids can do this ( and this was in the 90 s) it could be a real issue. I could visualise boats arriving here and ID cards being handed out as they land.

They have embedded fingerprints and face recognition in a plastic card the size of a bank card.
As migrants to France we had to take bank information, proof of residence, health cards, birth and marriage certificates etc etc
It is not just a bit of paper, you know!

If ID is required for voting then ID cards should be provided and funded by the Government.

ID cards for voting are provided free of charge by local authorities for anyone without an approved form of ID.

We always used them in Spain. If you have nothing to hide and are in the country legally, what's the problem??

My local council provided voting ID. I took a selfie and then uploaded it to the online form then they then returned a letter by post in time to vote.

The voting ID was/is a “solution” to a problem that barely even exists in this land.
They don’t trust us = we don’t trust them !

I have ID. Passport and driving licence. For those without ID, I agree there should be an ID card.

I would be ok with ID cards. It might even mean more people voting as those without passports driving licences etc would have the right id

What has identity cards got to do with hard right Nazi lovers ? I am sure no one on here is ‘far right’ and I have been here a while now. More a communistic thing if anything. Sheer ignorance , very easy to label anyone who doesn’t agree with you. I think we all actually have to prove who we are by use of passports, driver’s license etc ,not much difference. We don’t have them here but our borders are a tad more secure , not completely but reasonably so.

No I wouldn’t like one. I have a passport and driving license. I don’t need to give even more evidence to prove that I am who I am and as suggested upthread, I don’t have anything to hide.

The PASS card, the Citizens card and others are available and becoming evermore widely acceptable.
It will cost £billions to issue ID cards, and government computers are too decrepit to link cards to systems. It's a hugely unnecessary expense which won't solve a problem that doesn't exist. Of course immigrant citizens have biometric ID cards so they are a step ahead maybe it's the green eyed monster at play here. Anyway I'm all right Jack I've got the "entitlement"card IYKYK

Interestingly because local services are all set up for issuing identity cards, my Spanish grandchildren got their passports there in 30 minutes, at a cost of 30€.
