I have just listened to J D Vance’s speech in Munich today.

It was absolutely spot on, what a man!

Those of you praising Vance might be interested in this piece that came out in October last year about this piece of work.

Nice. Eh?

Appalling, and yet there are those who think he’s ’more genuine and smarter than the whole UK government’
Odd point of view, perhaps.

Trump is a meglomaniac. Viance is scary.

Antisemitism goes hand in hand with the alt right.
Hence the story in Utah of schools permitted to fly the nazi flag.
We can't just keep ignoring this because Trump or Vance say something we like the sound of.
Ignoring it means we are complicit.

My partner just said that Vance met with the leader of the far right in Germany, but not the Chancellor.

Yes, because he is alt right. Makes sense. Musk also spoke to the same political group by vid.
Perhaps when Trump visits the UK he will spend more time with Farage and Tice rather than Starmer.
Far right fascists prefer like minded people.

The people sent to Gitmo have essentially disappeared. There is no outside contact, no legal representation, nothing. Just gone. Humans rights groups have already started the legal process to get access to the migrants to check to be sure they are being treated as they should be.

Vance? Isn't he the idiot who claimed that immigrants were eating people's pet cats?
Did he believe that, or is he just a liar?

I believe he is and then Trump repeated it if I recall. Sounds about on par with what I heard in his speech today. Rubbish.

Casdon Sat 15-Feb-25 18:13:28

It looks like the Christian Democrats are quite a way ahead of the AfD far right party, Vance is backing the wrong horse if the polls are right.

Yes huge breach of protocol.
Though as somebody said, Vance has done the impossible and united Europe.

Yes, in many ways it is much worse than 1933. The financial crisis allowed Hitler to demonise all Jews, and show them to be the cause of hardships for Germans.

But now, it is global, not local- and AI and Social Media have allowed billionaires and oligarchs to dominate the 'marketing', and target the most vulnerable. Same happened with Brexit. It is all so predictable now, and all the more scary.

They spent billions undermining Europe, bit by bit, country by country, starting with Brexit- Hungary, Italy, Germany, France even- because they knew they had to divide and rule.

At least Euroean countries have each other, despite all the above. The UK is standing very much alone, financially, industrially, commercially, farming, fisheries, and on, and on, and politically too.

I actually agree pascal30.

Trump wants to turn his back on Europe - good riddance to him and his weird cronies.

Hopefully, European leaders step up, stand together and get rid of Trump’s influence in our affairs. In the long run, Europe will be better for it … and America will lose out.

In time, Trump may regret his isolationist stance because it will lead to his power on the world stage diminishing; and if there’s one thing Trump loves, it’s power!

But I isn't simply Trump. The turn towards the Pacific/China is a longstanding USA policy. Trump is restating it more directly than his predecessors and Europe should have acted far sooner.

Well apparently President Trump on Wednesday announced an order to open a detention centre at Guantanamo Bay to house up to 30,000 immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally.

FriedGreedTomatoes2

Do you know what will happen to them there? Will they be kept there indefinitely and in what conditions? I do hope they'll not be as bad as the overcrowding and parlous conditions in US jails.

The megaprison in El Salvador only holds about 15,000 prisoners. The photos from there remind me of the holocaust.

I saw George Monbiot speak at our local theatre on the subject of loneliness. He kept the packed house entertained, moved and educated for nearly two hours. I was so impressed by his insight into the workings of the human mind and heart and also his ability to recall so many quotes, reports and data on such a difficult and emotive subject.

People might not agree with him, but he's no twerp.

I was lucky enough to do a week's retreat with him many years ago.. he is very compassionate and has a wealth of knowledge.. it was an ecological Buddhist retreat

Just what I would expect you to say.. you are very predictable

”I am sure some of Trump's supporters on here have such amazing achievement list, but are just too modest and discreet to boast about it.”

Yes, I’m sure that’s the case Claremont🤣🤣🤣

Babs03 Sat 15-Feb-25 16:50:14

George Monbiot is a kind, courageous, and compassionate journalist/writer. Have been reading his pieces for many years. Not only does he care deeply about the environment he believes that all human lives should have the same currency and so rails against the injustices committed against those whose lives are considered cheap/disposable.
Trump probably wouldn’t give him the time of day which only serves to elevate Monbiot in my opinion, indeed the people Trump admires are all far right fascists/crooks.

George Monbiot:

“In 1995, Nelson Mandela presented him with a United Nations Global 500 Award for outstanding environmental achievement.[81]

He won the Sir Peter Kent award 1991 prize for his book Amazon Watershed.

In November 2007, his book Heat was awarded the Premio Mazotti, an Italian book prize.

In 2017, he was a recipient of the SEAL Environmental Journalism Award for his work at The Guardian.[82]

In 2022, Monbiot was awarded The Orwell Prize for Journalism.[83]”

Regardless of whether one agrees with him or not, dismissing him as ‘a twerp’ says far more about the poster than it does about Mr Monbiot.

I am sure some of Trump's supporters on here have such amazing achievement list, but are just too modest and discreet to boast about it.

Now THIS is an insulting post if ever I saw one. He is probably one of the most intelligent person I (don't) know. But yes, I thought YOU might say that.

He is very clear that for this new world order to be able to work, they need to hoodwink and take with them a certain number of easily led fools. They spend huge amounts to achieve this.

Casdon Sat 15-Feb-25 16:37:09

I didn’t know people still used the word twerp, I haven’t heard it for donkeys years. I’ve always thought of it as an affectionate term for somebody you know who does something a bit daft.

AGAA4 Sat 15-Feb-25 16:25:42

The real twerp is Trump but that is being quite kind. There are far more descriptive words for him.
