I have just listened to J D Vance’s speech in Munich today.

It was absolutely spot on, what a man!

Better than Catch & Release Cossy?

I think JD Vance is smarter and more genuine than the whole of the UK parliament put together, Great to have someone of his stature calling out the pathetic UK and European political class. And his wife is Asian, so he cannot be called a racist.

sad confused

I would be really glad if Trump. Vance, Musk concentrated on China and the Pacific

I think Vance maybe did NATO a favour with his speech because everyone was shocked and furious, and hopefully that will galvanise all the countries to seriously look at their financial commitments to it.. and start to find a solution to Ukraine without the overpowering influence of Trump.. He is clearly not putting Ukraine's interests first..

Vance just showed how ignorant he is about about Europe..

Grantanow Sat 15-Feb-25 13:45:56

The US focus on the Pacific and China has been evident since before Clinton was President and their concern that Europe was not contributing enough to NATO was voiced by Obama.
Cancel and Trump are reiterating a policy of long standing and the Europeans should not claim to be shocked by its being restated in blunt terms. The chickens have come home to roost. We need to spend far more on defence and that means cutting in other areas given we are already heavily indebted.

Cossy Its not at all straightforward at the moment but this article is really helpful

What to know about Guantánamo Bay, the base where Trump will send ‘criminal aliens

apnews.com/article/guantanamo-bay-detention-migrants-what-to-know-trump-d027c5c24b523f31a62271dcbe7c010e

Ie - who is being targeted, is it adequately planned, will it be the military or border force, legal actions against it, what Cuba has to say, the fact there is only room in non-military facilities for tiny numbers not 30.000.....

LizzieDrip Sat 15-Feb-25 13:41:40

Cossy I was about to ask FGT that very same question.

Although, I wouldn’t expect a response - she’s said previously she won’t respond to my posts as I’m “always gunning for her, and am bad for her well being”. That’s her prerogative.

Cossy I also find some of the comments on GN offensive, such as being called “fools” for supporting our current government:

”I sincerely hope the tide is turning. We have fools running the country and encouraging the fools in the country to carrying on voting for them”

Well apparently President Trump on Wednesday announced an order to open a detention centre at Guantanamo Bay to house up to 30,000 immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally.

You think this ok?

I just can’t understand why so many people don’t see how Trump etc al are using immigrants ( not to mention trans people and a few others) in the same way that the Nazis used the Jews prior to WWII.

Because they simply don’t want to, they complain about migrants, they complain about refugees, Moslems, etc etc.

They have complete blind spot re “Jonny Foreigner”, it’s ignorance and whether they like it or not, it’s racism.

They all remind me of Alf Garnet!

They’ve forgotten, even though constantly reminded, they are here in this country, merely due to an accident of birth.

I find most of the pro Trump, anti immigration comments on GN offensive, particularly the below.

*There are many of us out here who feel exactly as I do and I believe we are welcoming our enemies, feeding, educating, homing and clothing them.

Then people act surprised when they turn against us.

Wake up and smell the coffee.*

I find it really hard to understand the mindset of the few GN members who still, despite news reports and first hand reports, still think that Trump and his associates are the "good guys". Or are you just stirring the pot?

Either way, I am out of this thread, those supporting him are either fools (other words are available) or making fun out of a serious subject. I shall leave you to your silly little echo chamber

👏👏

Cossy said " I daresay gay people will be next on his agenda"

Well, its on the cards already, tho we dont know how far it will be pursued

Pete Hegseth, Trump’s Defense pick, says allowing gay troops to serve openly reflects a Marxist agenda

Here is a fun fact for those who think Trumps immigration plan is the greatest of all time.

A portion of them are being released after being arrested. Back I to the same communities they were picked up in.

It is called Catch and Release.

Honestly, you couldn’t make it up?

Cossy Sat 15-Feb-25 13:08:25

Rula

No need to announce your departure!

I'm just grateful that Trump is getting rid of trans women partaking in women's sports. About time too.

Do you truly believe he’s done this because he wants to support women?

In my view they shouldn’t have been allowed to compete against women in the first place.

However, imo, Trump just hates trans people, I daresay gay people will be next on his agenda.

The majority of people on GNs loathe (rightly) Trump and his administration.

We know the main make up of many of his supporters, redneck , religious groups, poor people, those with no high school education.

Ironically, many of whom will be hurt by his actions.

Those living in the US who have criticised Trump and his cronies on here need to be noted.

Sago

Casdon

He demonstrated a frighteningly low understanding of the dynamics of world politics, and promoted a right wing, USA-centric view of the world. If that’s your thing, you’d like him.

I’m oh dear, that didn’t take long!

Post trash and you get trash back Sago. You know how it works!

Oh yes. Sovereignty, they shouted and screamed and now!?!

Claremont Sat 15-Feb-25 12:43:57

What is so amazing, is that it it now the very people who have been shouting 'Sovereignty', when buying part of a fully elected group, with many representatives at the top table making joint decisions- who are now saying 'with Trump all the way'.

It is just unbelievable.

Babs03 Sat 15-Feb-25 12:28:28

Freedom of speech doesn’t exist, Chomsky has spoken at length about this but will not bore anyone here with the whole thing, will just give the gist. Freedom of speech means people are not only allowed to speak about increasing immigration- though in all honesty I have never witnessed anyone being unable to talk about this, I think the issue is when others don’t like what they are saying because it borders on racism - it also means that people are allowed to air extremist opinions that can lead others to commit violence. Fact is would those who want freedom of speech be happy with Islamic extremists speaking publicly, grooming those who then go on to commit terrible crimes, or be happy with the KKK holding forth about black people and Jewish people, inciting terrible crimes.
Freedom of speech cannot exist, that is why there are laws against inciting hatred and violence in every civilised country.
We have freedom of expression, that is the difference here. We never had or will have freedom of speech. And countries that do not have freedom of expression are countries like Iran where comments on here would be strictly policed and individuals investigated . Nobody on here suffers this so I don’t think we need this constant hand wringing about not being able to say something.

AGAA4 Sat 15-Feb-25 12:27:23

I agree with LizzieDrip. Trump and Vance need to get "their own house in order" before criticising other countries. There is quite a lot wrong with the USA that they should be putting right.
I find the American way of life quite alien to that of Europeans and don't want to be lectured to by Trump or Vance.

Galaxy Sat 15-Feb-25 12:14:36

How would you campaign against the gun laws if you didnt have freedom of speech.

LizzieDrip Sat 15-Feb-25 10:46:17

Perhaps Mr Vance’s time might be better spent considering his own country’s vile gun laws:

In 2021 (the last year for which data is available) 20,958 people were murdered by guns in the USA.

Even more were injured and used guns to commit suicide.

Stop worrying about our free speech, Mr Vance, and think about your own people shooting each other - that’s your ‘enemy from within’!

Churchview Sat 15-Feb-25 09:35:40

Sorry.

I wonder if Vance could give three examples of how he thinks the basic liberties of religious Britons are being eroded.

Churchview Sat 15-Feb-25 09:35:02

I wonder if Vance could give three examples of how he things the basic liberties of religious Britons aren't being eroded.

I wonder if Vance thinks Britain is as religion driven as America?

His speech was aimed for for his home market. A willy waving exercise to show the American public that he 'owned' Europe.

love0c Sat 15-Feb-25 09:27:59

I sincerely hope the tide is turning. We have fools running the country and encouraging the fools in the country to carrying on voting for them.

Galaxy Sat 15-Feb-25 09:23:40

The idea that there has been no problem with free speech in the UK alone is ridiculous. The fact that the right do it too doesnt negate the issues that have been happening in the last few years. But I am delighted to see that people are now supporting the free speech ideal.

flappergirl Sat 15-Feb-25 09:17:57

American Isolationism. Remember that? America will throw Europe under the bus quite happily and has demonstrated it before. Whatever ills you think there are in Europe, believe me Trump, Vance and Musk are not the answer.
