Zelensky - is Trump ousting him out to make way for a Putin choice?

Thinking Putin wants this hero out in order to put his choice in his place. The outrageous lies spouted by Trump are surely a signal that this is exactly the plan. Kalensky has held his country together. Trump is goading him in an attempt to promote an election which can’t happen as the war is ongoing but also to force one so the corrupt connivances of Putin can weaken Ukraine.

It looks as though Putin will retain the lands he has stolen from Ukraine which are rich in the rare minerals.
He will be rewarded for the invasion.
Trump has also not agreed to any more help for Ukraine so it seems Ukraine could be left in a precarious state.

At least they are talking, and being civil to each other, if Trump gets the minerals he wants he will step up to defending them. Looking at the mineral map Russia has about 1/3 of them, they are difficult to extract and most are refined in China, that does not sound good and most likely a refining plant will be set up in Ukraine.

What I don't understand is what basis - well, where the borders are supposed to be in a peace settlement

Has Trump/anyone actually said? all so murky to me.

What is Russia supposed to get out of it? Trump wants his minerals and this means no doubt aspects of control? Are we in UK and EU supposed to peace keep for the US's benefit?

I did see assertions on bluesky the other day that Ukraine’s minerals are virtually worthless from a profit seeker point of view because the extracting them will be extremely costly. I have no idea if this is true.
Has anyone else seen this?

What I saw was that it would be many years before there would be any profit as the extraction would take time and of course money.
It seems that Trump is very eager to have those minerals so there must be a huge profit for him down the line.

As I said previously it’s all designed to force Zelensky to make a deal with Trump for Ukraines mineral wealth and according to all the papers that is what Zelensky will be meeting with Trump to do on Friday.

It’s what a lot of people thought isn’t it?

Yes I did see that.

I’ll mention it to son see what he thinks (geologist) he may have some idea.

But I thought it made sense. I wouldn’t be remotely surprised to learn that Trump had not thought it through.

I have yet to hear anything that mentions US providing security for Ukraine. It's all still very woolly. But at least the US has rowed back from saying Ukraine started the war, at least ATM!

Trump is all over Putin ,not one word of criticism, whilst Zelensky is treated like the enemy

Because Trump lives far enough away not to be involved in war.

The rhetoric is changing, it looks like the deal is Trump is offering is arms for minerals, so that he can justify spending on arms and if needed defending Ukraine against further invasion.

So the US gets the minerals it wants and Ukraine gets the security it needs and is allowed to remain neutral outside NATO. We will soon see a framework for an end to the war from “Trump the peacemaker”

Nothing would surprise me WWM2 The Russians have most definitely been interfering in elections, governments, big business etc in many western countries. People like Trump have traits that might leave them open to blackmail and corruption. I still think there are big questions to ask about Epstein, the men he had friendships with and the connections that he had with Russia.

Listening to Katty Kay and Anthony Scaramucci - there is a suggestion that Trumps speeches about Ukraine are straight out of Putins note book, and that Trump is being guided by the Kremlin.

Wouldn’t be at all surprised.

Love the way Macron puts his hand on Trumps arm and corrects him.

More people need to do that!

Well done Macron. He corrected the liar.

My goodness the world order is changing.

The UN had a resolution for lasting peace in Ukraine.

The USA voted against alongside Russia, North Korea, Hungary etc.

"Trump’s Ukraine rare earths deal: 'The art of the steal'

If Trump forces Ukraine to trade minerals for support, he’s helping Putin more than America. "

Headline in Kyiv newspaper today. I feel so angry about Trump's betrayal and I'm not Ukrainian, how must they feel?

foxie48 Mon 24-Feb-25 18:16:49

Wow, the US has voted with Russia and North Korea against a UN sanction brought by Ukraine. Unbelievable.

I think Trump doesn’t like or identify with most of Europe but he does like the UK so he won’t do anything to really put them offside. He clearly doesn’t like Ukraine for reasons best known to himself. Looking back,he has always had a bit of a soft spot for Russia and Putin. Cut from the same cloth I suppose. They ‘get’ each other.

It’s not that he doesn’t like Ukraine he hates the prospect of getting into a war thats going to cost $hundreds of billions even if it can be won, after that costing even more to rebuild.

I don’t blame him for that either, however I think his negotiating style is awful, deliberately rubbing others up the wrong way.

NotSpaghetti Mon 24-Feb-25 09:45:13

nanna8 - I'm sure Putin "gets" Trump.
