She and Apple have fallen out. For cyber security she wanted access to the encrypted iCloud messages. Apple said no. So from 3pm today Apple removed the highest level of data protection.

^Your obsession with the Labour govt is getting out of control FGT2^

A few of years ago posters said the same about others, substituting Tory for Labour.

No wonder posters leave Gransnet. There seems to be a group of posters now which is unable to discuss the question objectively without attacking the poster.

But the Conservatives party tore themselves apart. Chose the wrong leaders. Got rid of their best MP’s. All at times of national crisis sometimes. That’s why some of us criticised them. And were proven to be right because their own party members had to get rid of Johnson and Truss.

In Obamas last year of office he demanded that Apple allow the government a back door to encrypted data. He lost the fight.

Apples security has always been its big selling point.

Apple is still very secure.

Hey perhaps Apple should reveal all phone conversations between politicians and civil servants as a first step, then see how keen they are on the idea!

What's the logic in that? Do conversations between politicians endanger the lives of the public? You don't seem to have much idea how sordid the lives of those who make money out of people and drug trafficking and child porn are.

Yes, they do.

Conversations between Blair and his SPAD, Campbell, certainly endangered lives here in the UK and elsewhere.

Well I think it’s worrying.

Labour has cancelled elections and arrested people for their opinions; now they have the power to access everyone's iPhone. The damage they are doing to everything we hold dear is incalculable; sacred values like free speech, property rights, and democracy!

Labour has not cancelled elections. Some county councils are postponing elections for twelve months because they have chosen to merge areas so elections being held in May would be pointless and further elections would have to be held when the changes are complete, postponing is not cancelling. The councils themselves decided whether to apply to postpone elections, most of them are Tory and Lib Dem controlled I believe one is Labour controlled.

Nobody has been imprisoned for an opinion on social media, those who did go to prison after the shameful riots did so because the content of their message was racist and encouraged violence towards the police and minority groups.

This claim of the loss of free speech in Europe that is coming from across the Atlantic mainly from Vance is ridiculous when you consider one news agency has been go barred from the White House conferences for speaking out against Trump and Trump has banned the use of the word ‘felon’, anybody who does will be sacked.

Casdon Fri 21-Feb-25 22:36:00

There is a line I think between free speech, and planning and committing criminal acts. I assume the intention is to stop the latter - eg making, distributing, purchasing or watching banned images. planning people smuggling, acts of terrorism etc.

This is the same woman who thinks Amazon should stop selling knives or they should be blunted rather than addressing the underlying problem.

There are knives in every house in the world.

Amazon is not the problem, its the people who use them as a weapon!!

I do not have a single Zombie knife in my hous, nor does anyone else I know. The knives these people are buying are not ordinary kitchen knives, they are knives special designed and serrated to cause maximumdamage to human bodies.

Are you really saying that you have knives like these shown in this link in your house and that they can be found in every house world wide? uk.pinterest.com/ideas/zombie-knife/916859609086/

I just think that people who are like me, not particularly technically minded, want reassurance that their passwords, Apple wallet, emails and family photos remain protected. That’s all that would concern me.

The question is why would anyone be interested in your family photos and emails? Are you running illegal operations? Transporting drugs? encouraging terrorists?

What has higher priority protecting your family photos and emails or cracking down on paedophile rings and rescuing abused children or stopping immigrants being brought to this country in small boats?

Galaxy Fri 21-Feb-25 22:26:21

Well we would all like to ban speech we dont like but we need to resist that temptation.

Gin Fri 21-Feb-25 22:25:13

I think it is time to ban extreme right wing posts. I find it extremely frightening.

Blah blah blah. No, the government does not have the power to access everyone's iPhone. It's a shame it doesn't have more access tgo the dark web because law enforcers would find it easier to catch child porn, drug and people traffickers.

Yes, an examination of 4chan/pol/ would be a good start...

The bad guys will use Snapchat, Telegram anyway and no doubt a shedload of other apps known only to those using the dark web.

Apparently very few users use Advanced Data Protection. It’s actually risky for normal users to use it, not that they can now. There is a very good chance of keys being lost and losing access to all data. But of course the point is that we should have the choice.

Yep, my tech savvy AC have ADP

I have double authentication, and on a stressy day that goes tits up

Galaxy Fri 21-Feb-25 21:46:49

Now you’re being silly FriedGreenTomatoes2. You know that it is one of a large range of measures, we’ve discussed it in detail on here before. You don’t help your corner by repeating what you know isn’t true.

Wyllow3 Fri 21-Feb-25 21:44:51

Also worth mentioning - if Apple removed these current normal high levels of protection in the UK their sales would plummet - as thats one of the reasons lots of us buy Apple.

You are protected for all these, people Woodenspoon. I'm an Apple user as well and normal levels of protection are very high and always have been a step ahead.
