Apparently, Zelensky surrenders to Trump and will sign mineral deal within hours..

nanna8 Fri 21-Feb-25 23:55:46

Strike a light ! I suppose he has no choice with withdrawal of American aid. Something had to give, so many people losing lives.

MaizieD Sat 22-Feb-25 00:08:58

That’s not quite what this ABC news report is saying. It says ‘working on’ a new deal.

There aren't words acceptable to GN to articulate my feelings on this development. I thought aid was aid, no strings........

Wyllow3 Sat 22-Feb-25 00:22:36

The devil is in the detail.

What territory is the Ukraine getting

Is the mineral deal for payment of past aid or for US support going forward to keep Russian at bay.

Whats in it for Russia to stop fighting?

Wyllow3 Sat 22-Feb-25 00:39:05

And will they have full and free elections when peace returns!!! - not US or Russian.

Wyllow3 Sat 22-Feb-25 01:08:06

I'm not sure Zelensky has signed anything, headlines on CNN are that he has refused.

It said on TRIP ( if I understood it correctly) that it’s a development fund, not aid, but people think they’re just giving money away.

Namsnanny Sat 22-Feb-25 02:12:48

I know I won't be popular for saying this, but I shall be glad to see the killing stopped, and the countless children saved from trafficking.
Does that mean a peace keeping force will be stationed there?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 22-Feb-25 08:42:26

namsnanny I absolutely agree, but I have a real issue with awarding the aggressor.

This does not bode well for the future.

foxie48 Sat 22-Feb-25 08:55:59

We don't know what is in the latest Trump deal and it's not yet been agreed. No one wants this war to continue, no one apart from Putin wanted it in the first place but I hope Ukraine is treated fairly. Zelensky is a brave and inspirational leader and I hope he's protected when the war ends regardless of whether he's in politics or not. Too many of Putin's enemies fall out of windows or get poisoned!

love0c Sat 22-Feb-25 09:04:40

WhitewaveMark2 I agree with your first sentence. I do not know what the future holds. I thought Russia was to give up some land they had taken and the same with Ukraine. So they both have to compromise. So both of them have 'achieved'. Have I got that wrong? I know the killing has to stop. Something has to change.

Churchview Sat 22-Feb-25 09:08:45

So if this is right, has Trump not abused the situation of a country being on its knees to enrich the USA?

Barleyfields Sat 22-Feb-25 09:12:53

A fair summary Churchview. A disgraceful situation.

Aldom Sat 22-Feb-25 09:12:58

Shinamae where have you seen this information please? I've searched and cannot find it.

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 22-Feb-25 09:13:08

Churchview : yes. And he will be very proud of this.

petra Sat 22-Feb-25 09:24:40

I wonder if there are any Ukrainians still alive who warned the government at the time ( 1994) when the USA, UK, and Russia persuaded Ukraine to give up their nuclear weapons.
I hope not. If only not to see that they were right.
They signed the Budapest Memorandum.

Not only Ukraine, though. People are starving and food is going rotten because of what Trump and Musk are doing ( the richest man in the world taking food away from the poorest). And, when it comes to drilling or digging for whatever Trump wants to make his country rich global warming and protecting the environment will be totally ignored.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 22-Feb-25 09:55:39

The US has become a pariah state.

Best avoided.

foxie48 Sat 22-Feb-25 09:58:53

According to The Washington Post, Trump's deal links the US's continuing support to them being able to have some of Ukraine's mineral wealth. Comments to the article have been put together by AI, please see below. this is what many Americans think of Trump.
"The comments overwhelmingly criticize the potential deal between the U.S. and Ukraine, viewing it as extortion or blackmail by Trump. Many express distrust in Trump's promises, fearing he will not uphold any agreement and may instead favor Russia. Commenters are concerned about the ethical implications of the U.S. demanding mineral rights from a war-torn Ukraine in exchange for security assistance, likening it to a mafia-style shakedown. There is a strong sentiment of shame and disappointment in the U.S.'s actions, with some suggesting that Ukraine should seek more trustworthy partners like the EU."

Correct Churchview.

As if we didn’t already know what a monster Trump is, we now have it ‘writ large’ in front of our eyes.

Sadly, whilst Trump leads the US, we can no longer regard them as an ally. If he’ll do this to Ukraine, he’ll do it to any of us.

Sadly, I agree and what’s worse is all Trump/Vance/Musk’s poor decisions will impact many other countries. This is just the start

“ Sir Keir Starmer is to announce a new package of support for Ukraine, despite Donald Trump piling pressure on Kyiv to back down and accept a peace deal with Russia.

The Telegraph can reveal that the Prime Minister will use the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion to unveil a “triple whammy” of measures, including military aid and sanctions, on Monday.

It is in stark contrast to the approach taken by Mr Trump, who has in recent days called Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, a “dictator” and is pressing for a speedy end to the conflict.

Amid a widening split between the US and Europe over the Ukraine war, the US president on Friday accused Sir Keir of doing “nothing” to bring the conflict to a close.

The US also indicated that it could leave an international effort to prosecute Russia for war crimes.

The differences between London and Washington will be put under a spotlight when Sir Keir visits the White House for face-to-face talks with Mr Trump on Thursday.

In an attempt to calm any tensions, The Telegraph understands that during the trip Sir Keir is expected to finally announce the date – most likely to be 2030 – by which 2.5 per cent of UK GDP will be spent on defence.”
