The problem with Donald Trump....

This was written during Trump's previous period as POTUS, and I think it sums up, eloquently, just what it is that Brits ( and presumably other nationalities) dislike about him. It is worth a read.
Nate White
“Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?” Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote the following response:
A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:

• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.

• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.

It will Ronib, once they get rid of him. His approval rating is now the lowest since records began.

No they're not. I'm no fan but let's stick to facts

Public approval of Trump's job performance so far has remained higher than it was for most of his 2017-2021 first term in office and higher than his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, enjoyed during his four-year term.

It's remained steady at 44%. Reuters, today.

Arto1s , perhaps you are also a fan of the Tate brothers accused of and awaiting trial for rape, kidnap and other crimes against women in Romania.
I understand that intervention from the White House has caused their release and they will be landing in the States very soon, possibly because they are supporters of Mr Trump.
Is this OK ? Or is this a bridge too far?

foxie48 Thu 27-Feb-25 08:26:34

Trump getting the Tate's out of Romania will go down well with all the mysogynist young men in the world. He's building his power block around people who have guns and who will come out to fight if there is civil unrest, hence pardoning people jailed following January 6th. These will be Trump's brown shirts. I really hope I'm wrong.

Iam64 Thu 27-Feb-25 08:32:31

Accepting the USA voted for Trump isn’t denied but that doesn’t mean we ‘get over it’.

The Tate brothers are reported to have left Romania for America in a private jet earlier today. Imagine, a world leader actively enabling dangerous men like them, encouraging them to visit/live in the country they are responsible for

Yep brothers who sex trafficked minors.
Great candidates for any jobs going in the new administration.

It’s becoming increasingly worrying isn’t it Babs03

Apparently Trump’s latest statement has been that the EU was formed to screw the US. Well that will be news to brexiters they think it was formed to screw the UK.
Whatever Trump says sounds like the mouthing off of a pub bore, the sort you find propping up the bar putting the world to rights. Funnily enough he doesn’t drink, so this is him sober. 🙄

I thnk I shall stop thinking of it as the Trusk regime and go for calling them Mump.

I am becoming increasingly worried, I fear that we are witnessing a Fascist takeover over of the most powerful country in the world. A country with the most advanced fighting force and biggest economy with control of most of our technology. This announcement by Jeff Bezos about the Washington Post Op eds is pivotal and frankly the real reason for trump putting his supporters in Key government positions regardless of their suitability is starting to become obvious, as is the replacement of key security and army staff etc.
In an email to staff, Jeff Bezos said the newspaper will write "every day in support and defence of… personal liberties and free markets" after months of closer relations with Donald Trump's presidency.

Just read that there’s a measles outbreak in Texas. I assume that people haven’t been vaccinating their children and there’s no herd immunity. And I think they now how a health minister who’s anti vacc which won’t help matters.

H is a Kennedy, so I think he has been apointed to be health Minister for his trophy value rather than than for his medial qualifications. Apparently as well as being anti-vacc, so not likely to promote the only thing that keeps outbreaks of measle etc in check, but also he suffers from taenium solium taeniasis in his brain (look it up for yourself, I don't want to read the details again. You might not want to either, once you have read them once) This is referred to a lot online by people who don't think he is right for the job. I don't know what treatment he has had for it, or whether it would affect his ability to do the job, but it does not increase my confidence in him.

Elegran Thu 27-Feb-25 09:43:57

I'm sorry for the typos. That should start "He", and of course "appointed" has two Ps. My breakfast coffee isn't having effect yet.

Elegran Thu 27-Feb-25 09:46:32

And measles is plural, not singular, in name. It is also very plural in the population, once it is allowed to sneak in.

Trump is our President. Get over it.

Trump is arguably the most powerful person in the world at the moment, courtesy of being your president.

We'd be happy to leave you to it otherwise.

As his actions and policies can have an effect on the global economy and world peace, in which we all have a stake, then your command to get over it will be ignored. And treated with the contempt it deserves.

Arto1s Thu 27-Feb-25 09:58:08

Please, why can’t you all accept that Trump is my President….Get over it,

I agree, anyone who genuinely thinks Trump and all his cronies actions won’t affect us in the UK and the rest of the world, in many ways, really does need to look again!

He might be “your president” but frankly if his actions were solely affecting those who voted him in, I’m sure all of us “would get over it”, however aside from feeling empathy for our friends and family in the USA, along with all those who didn’t vote for him, your POTUS, in his short reign thus far, had made it clear he is intent on world domination!

So far, Mexico, Canada, Greenland, Gaza and Ukraine have all been “targeted” in one way or another. His “cosying” up to Putin is shocking. His comments about Europe are inaccurate and serve only to inflame other leaders.

Come back here in 12 months time and let us know how things are in the land of the free if Trump has managed to avoid starting WW3.

LizzieDrip Thu 27-Feb-25 10:08:16

Artols believe us, we would be very happy to never have to think about Trump ever again!

However, as other posters have pointed out (and I’m sure you know) his actions are affecting the rest of the world, so he’s impossible to ignore.

ronib Thu 27-Feb-25 10:08:25

Don’t suppose anyone is interested in the outcome of Trump’s involvement in talks over Ukraine? Wouldn’t it be a thing most wonderful if the killing stopped? Not forgetting the previous administration’s involvement?

This site will surely come to the attention of the USA’s thought police if it continues to attack Trump on a daily basis. It can’t be that difficult to pull GNet in the USA? Just a thought…. Proscribed organization?

Dickens Thu 27-Feb-25 10:11:34

Contempt? Really?

Yes, really.

It's a juvenile retort to make on a N&P thread.

You are basically telling posters to be quiet, to stop posting thoughts and opinions you don't approve of.

Yes, but Trump, and his First Buddy, are very much in favour of free-speech, so it shouldn't be a problem. hmm

And yes, it would be good to know that the killing is going to end - especially for those who've already lost family members.

However, when you appease a bully - history shows that is not normally the end of the situation.

Churchview Thu 27-Feb-25 10:32:42

Ronib "Don’t suppose anyone is interested in the outcome of Trump’s involvement in talks over Ukraine? Wouldn’t it be a thing most wonderful if the killing stopped?"

It appears the outcome of Trump's involvement is that Ukraine get "the right to fight on" in return for access to its minerals.

Stopping the killing doesn't seem to have been the intention.

Russia raped and the USA plundered.
