This is welcome news. These crimes have gone on for too long with police not having enough powers to act swiftly. Well done Yvette Cooper.

It's a really great list. Some conservatives have pointed out it was on their list too - fair enough, it doesn't really matter. Resourcing is the greatest issue so its likely to be a slower response than ideal.

We need more police though.

As long as the police don't abuse their new powers, which, I'm afraid, is quite likely given the numerous things that have happened over the years and the widespread corruption that has been exposed..

I would like to see police on the beat again, especially in problem areas but I expect this is an impossible dream unless many more police are recruited.

They can bring in all the crime laws they like, unless we have an effective police force and sufficient finance nothing will happen.

The police are currently unable to enforce the existing laws for lack of numbers and finance. All these new ;aws do is give them more llaws they cannot enforce.

Ys, we do need more police, but some of the measures give greater powers in situations where they are already involved, if you look down the list. Like destroying knives found.

It's a shame to see some of the responses because it seems like "damned if they do, damned if they don't".

and although no one can condone corruption, where it exists, I think its about time we supported them in an often thankless task in hostile situations.

There are far more positives in the new laws than negatives.
Yes we need more police.
No most police officers will not abuse the new powers.
I have no regard for paedophiles, drinks spikers, thieves or anyone who harms children so won't shed many tears over their civil rights.

So true. My dd and her husband were attacked by a group of young men in the street recently. He has been left permanently scarred by his injuries. Despite their accounts and the fact that where the crime took place was one of the most heavily CCTV-monitored areas of the city, the case has been dropped. So my dd and sil don’t get justice and the miscreants now know they can get away with crime. My sil is in the police himself, ironically.

I agree Wyllow and await seeing some ‘meat on the bones’ of these new laws including a time frame for implementation

It is good news, surely? I agree about the need for more police officers but this is a place to start.
And this is in no way party political: I am happy to applaud any measures that take rights away from law breakers whomever initiated them.

But unless there are the police and financial report, this bill will not take any rights from any law breakers becaause there will be no police around to arrest them, prepare the case and take them to court.

They have planned/budgeted for more police. Not sure of the numbers, I'd have to check. won't be as many as we'd like but the right direction.
