They have planned/budgeted for more police. Not sure of the numbers, I'd have to check. won't be as many as we'd like but the right direction.

It is good news, surely? I agree about the need for more police officers but this is a place to start.
And this is in no way party political: I am happy to applaud any measures that take rights away from law breakers whomever initiated them.

But unless there are the police and financial report, this bill will not take any rights from any law breakers becaause there will be no police around to arrest them, prepare the case and take them to court.

It's a really great list. Some conservatives have pointed out it was on their list too - fair enough, it doesn't really matter. Resourcing is the greatest issue so its likely to be a slower response than ideal.

I agree Wyllow and await seeing some ‘meat on the bones’ of these new laws including a time frame for implementation

They can bring in all the crime laws they like, unless we have an effective police force and sufficient finance nothing will happen.

The police are currently unable to enforce the existing laws for lack of numbers and finance. All these new ;aws do is give them more llaws they cannot enforce.

So true. My dd and her husband were attacked by a group of young men in the street recently. He has been left permanently scarred by his injuries. Despite their accounts and the fact that where the crime took place was one of the most heavily CCTV-monitored areas of the city, the case has been dropped. So my dd and sil don’t get justice and the miscreants now know they can get away with crime. My sil is in the police himself, ironically.

There are far more positives in the new laws than negatives.
Yes we need more police.
No most police officers will not abuse the new powers.
I have no regard for paedophiles, drinks spikers, thieves or anyone who harms children so won't shed many tears over their civil rights.

The days of police officers in pairs on the beat will never come back

Wyllow3 Tue 25-Feb-25 13:11:03

Ys, we do need more police, but some of the measures give greater powers in situations where they are already involved, if you look down the list. Like destroying knives found.

It's a shame to see some of the responses because it seems like "damned if they do, damned if they don't".

and although no one can condone corruption, where it exists, I think its about time we supported them in an often thankless task in hostile situations.

As long as the police don't abuse their new powers, which, I'm afraid, is quite likely given the numerous things that have happened over the years and the widespread corruption that has been exposed..

I would like to see police on the beat again, especially in problem areas but I expect this is an impossible dream unless many more police are recruited.

This is what I was thinking about on the thread I started

I don’t care who has finally put these bills through, I’m glad they’ve finally been done!

We need more police though.

This is welcome news. These crimes have gone on for too long with police not having enough powers to act swiftly. Well done Yvette Cooper.

This is a particularly relevant part of the proposals for child protection not mentioned above:

"Over 50 new laws to be unveiled TODAY in biggest crime-fighting shake-up in decades"

Clips below all from Daily Mirror

"Home Secretary Yvette Cooper says a raft of new laws will help 'take back our town centres' as she presents the long-awaited Crime and Policing Bill with measures on knife crime, stalking and thefts.
These include a clampdown on shoplifting and the creation of new ASBO-style Respect Orders"

"Spiking will become a specific crime as part of the Government's drive to tackle violence against women and girls, while anti-stalking laws will be strengthened"

"The Bill will also include new laws targeting gangs who recruit children, slapping them with up to 10 years behind bars for exploitation"

" It will give police the power to seize and destroy dangerous blades found on private property. It will also allow vehicles - including off-road bikes and e-scooters - to be taken by officers without first giving a warning"

"The Bill also delivers on promises to tackle the use of AI to create explicit pictures and videos depicting children - and ban 'paedophile manuals' teaching sick abusers how to do this. it will also be a criminal offence not to report child sexual abuse"
