Do you think alliances across the world are in a process of change?
Thinking of Trump and Putin in particular so
America and Russia
China ,North Korea parts of the South Pacific
Middle East
Europe , Israel the wildcards probably going with America and Russia ultimately, certainly not with China.
All feels ominous to me. Not very stable at all. Will Europe be united or not ?

Yes Europe will remain united- the alternative does not bear thinking about.

It is a long time since I read 1984 but I remember that the world had been divided into three countries; Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. Winston Smith lived in Oceania which was constantly at war with either of the other two countries.

The Government in 1984 also acted as if we had always been at war with whoever we were currently at war with. It didn't matter who the enemy was as long as the populous could be frightened into compliance with whatever the leadership wanted.

Although it is often used as a paradigm for a dystopian future, it is also a work of fiction too.

I read it many many years ago, and one of the things I recall was that everyone drank beer they called 'wallop'!
