Trump/Zelensky interview in the White House

I’m shocked to the core by the absolute rudeness shown to Zelensky by Trump and Vance this afternoon.I’ve never seen anything like it.
However much they disagreed with things Zelensky said it was a terrible thing to see them try and humiliate him on public tv.
How Zelensky kept calm in the face of it I don’t know.
Even for Trump this was a new low. It should have been talks in private.🤬

Granny Gravy, why not have yourself a good long read of the poems of the war poets, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. These poems will shatter your illusion that warfare is a matter for mirth.

Please do not lecture me on war.

Our AC has served in Afghanistan, The Balkans, Iraq to name just a few conflicts, the things they witnessed were horrific and will never leave them.

It was humour that got them and their fellow combatants through then and still does now.

Does Trump not remember how dangerous the USSR was to the west and yet he is helping Putin in his aim to regain it.
Putin will never be an ally of the west.

That’s because Trump is a moronic, brainless clown! He sees what he wants to and believes what he wants to, he’s unstable and clearly requires some form of medication

Iam64 I find Trump and particularly Vance very intimidating. Just a feeling that he is dangerous to women. (Vance)

I totally agree.

I find both of them deeply unpleasant characters but Vance appears particularly menacing. I get a very uncomfortable gut feeling about him.

Granny Gravy: rubbish !

It was courage that got them through and it's gallantry that makes them tone down what happened to suit the tender ears of an old lady.

MayBee70 Sun 02-Mar-25 16:21:25

An American lady on Sky News ( don’t know who she is) has said that Zelensky needs to apologise to Trump angry. Thankfully the interviewer pointed out that Trump needs to apologise, too.

Oh for goodness sake!

It was A JOKE.

However, perhaps not entirely without foundation.

Not a funny one. On the edge of WW3, not not funny at all!

It was a joke about the Marsh family.
Lost in translation methinks.

PoliticsNerd Sun 02-Mar-25 16:31:17

I have just been watching that MayBee70. The women did seem to understand some of Zelensky's position. However, normally those in senior positions calm the situation and take the "blame". There was nothing diplomatic about Trump or his henchmen. How do you acheive anything by just shouting that you are the biggest baboon in the jungle?

He is a terrible choice unless you want war and sanctions turned on you.

How patronising!

I think there ars some Geansnetters who have loved ones with far more experience of war than most posters on here, Falklands war too, and I agree wholeheartedly with Grannygravy13.

There is nothing a load of Gransnetters can do about any of these events. Even if we marched it would not make one iota of difference as with the war in Iraq. Nothing was going to change Blair's mind, and that was based on lies.

Some Gransetters do not need lectures and suggestions about reading war poems (yes, I read all those for A level, thanks), some of us have lived with the fear.

The armed forces are known for their ability to joke in times of adversity.
It’s what gets them through each day.
I know, some is quite hair-raising but it's needed!

Please do not tell me what and how my child and his soldiers got through

And as for tender ears of an old lady how dare you!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the scene. Trump speaks his mind...no pussyfooting about with this man. How refreshing after Biden and Obama....sucking up and appeasing.

A Trump supporter! As the younger demographic would say, are you ok!!

I wholeheartedly support what you have said about military humour GG. Some here know a lot more about the reality than others.

Let's get back to Trump Gorillas or Baboons, I think they both fo it. However, a younger, fitter animal always comes along and rips the yead off the old one. It's not a prescription for old age or a long time in power.

There is a younger, fitter such person biding his time ☹

There are over a million Ukrainians or people of Ukrainian descent in the USA. Those refugees from thd war were sponsored and can work there legally. I wonder what they're thinking now?

I agree that the Zelensky-Trump-Vance situation is not ideal.

But a group of grans have absolutely no input into the negotiations.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Musk has one of his team monitoring these sort of sites...

It is very well known that soldiers when they return home after a conflict just do not want to talk about it to family and friends, not necessarily 'old ladies'. And that they can never recover and even suffer very serious mental illness, for the rest of their life.

There are many reasons for this. The horrors of it all, the suffering of innocents, women and children, the sight and sounds of losing comrades, to cite a few. One reason, for some - is guilt and the strong feeling they were acting after being trained to see the enemy as sub-human vermin- but knowing full well they were just other men, other fathers, other husbands, other sons- just like them.

I'm deeply depressed by what is happening in the US and in particular with the situation in Ukraine and Gaza. Let us not forget that vile video of Trump and Netanyahu lying on a beach in the new resort of Gaza, I found that disgusting. However, I do take some comfort from the fact that people of different political persuasions are coming together to condemn the Trump, Vance and Musk circus. This is happening in the US, with some Republicans speaking out, the UK where most of us seem sickened by what is happening and also across Europe.
The four points that have been agreed in this meeting in London were:
To keep military aid flowing into Ukraine, to have Kyiv at the table for any peace talks, for European leaders to to aim to deter any future Russian invasion of Ukraine and a "coalition of the willing" will be formed to defend Ukraine and guarantee peace there.
I feel proud to be British and for my part I totally support our PM. I'm certainly no war mongerer, the best way of keeping peace is to have some strength and to have allies.

You like people who simply shout others down? You think that literally having a louder voice makes someone's opinions more worthy, even if not one single word that comes put of their mouth has any meaningful value or an ounce of intelligent reasoning to back it up?
Heaven help us!

Well said, Oldnproud!

De-humanisation, and the use of grief to de-humanise some more.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 02-Mar-25 18:57:58

Claremont your post of 18.00 - I think you need to talk to serving military personnel to understand.

I have been for over 30 years, I find your post offensive on so many levels.

Another word of support for GrannyGravy from me. I’m not from the kind of proud military background she is but - both my grandfathers were in ww1, my father a Royal Marine in ww2. These men were kind, gentle, strong and hugely influential in shaping my personality, my core beliefs in equality, compassion, determination, loyalty and more.

GG13 and I could be described and right and left leaning 🙈. We rarely agree on politics but core values are compatible.

My work meant ‘dark humour’ often got us through.
