Who has scored a blinder during the last week.

The whole house (apart from Farage I think although he didn’t make a lot of sense) has praised his efforts.

People like Starmer known for what people say is a boring personality etc, come into their own in times of crises. He is a man without ego, a man of integrity and honesty. A man of intelligence and dependability.

I dislike Starmer as he tends to ignore things, like Jimmy Savile, the Grooming gangs, WASPI women, pensioners just a couple of pounds over the limit for pension credit, and the most serious
Trump being great friends with Putin, remember Novichok, and we share and pool intelligence with America.
Also he wants our troops on the ground in Ukraine to peace keep - then what if Putin starts up again after the peace deal? Not beyond the realms of possibility is it?
I'm very much against us being involved in Ukraine at all, apart from taking in citizens fleeing for their lives. We are a small country with a small military force with enough problems here. Any spare money should be spent here on our citizens for NHS, Housing, roads, schools etc. We have foodbanks and many homeless people etc
That needs sorting first not sending money to Ukraine

Oh please, not the Jimmy Saville thing again. Boris Johnson had to retract the lie he said about that in parliament and yet still people perpetuate it.

Starmer isn’t for everyone but please criticise based in reality. The Saville thing is nonsense.
Starmer is credited by Nazir Afzal as having changed the CPS thus allowing successful prosecutions of the grooming gangs.

Plus, Starmer’s plans to enhance our defence is long overdue. It will create work as well as keep us safe.

Nobody is blaming Americans for Trump, gmarie. The past 8 months have been the first time in ages that I haven't felt embarrassed by the representatives of the UK, so I know how you feel, though.

Re farmers (although what they have to do with this I don't know) I think a fair solution would be to let them pass on farms that are going to remain in the family (and be worked) free of IHT, but when they are sold or used as anything other than farming they should be charged the same IHT as other property.

As regards the armed forces, it seems to me that KS is doing his level best to reduce the likelihood of war. A peacekeeping force is exactly the sort of thing that soldiers train for - again to lessen the chances of an all-out conflict developing.

We stand with all of you across the pond who are suffering and didn’t vote in Trump!

As for farmers, yes I have some empathy for them, but never really understood why their farms were completely exempt from inheritance tax. Personally, I’d get rid of it completely.

Those with livestock on smaller farms have been in financial crisis for many years.

On confronting reality this Labour man has become a true Conservative.

I don’t know what you mean? He has done what any Prime Minister should do in the circumstances. I believe he has done what Sunak would have done too. However, he hasn’t done what Truss or Johnson, who would describe themselves as true Conservatives, would have done.

Do Any gransnetters farm or have family in the Armed Forces? Because if they do, this grans netter thinks Starmer is the pits!

I have two very close friends whose sons are both in the armed forces, both following in the footsteps of their fathers.

Anyone joining up knows very well that at some point they may be deployed to fight or peace keep.

It’s not that they want their family dead, but they all understand what they’ve signed up for

I have no doubt that Zelenskyy’s statement this afternoon, was drawn up over the weekend with Starmer’s and others help. I noticed Zelenskyy contacted Starmer earlier this afternoon - probably to run the final draft past him.

Susieq62 Tue 04-Mar-25 16:27:51

NanO I do suspect that Mr Starmer was rather busy today and unable to enjoy your demo or your pancakes.
Farmers are no worse off than many in the country to be honest.
There is a lot going on at the moment in case you have missed it all !

Anybody who can deal with the idiot Trump and his group of fellow idiots deserves a medal. Who ever they are and from whatever political group they belong to

Rula Tue 04-Mar-25 16:20:07

Apologies , that should have been on the Trump thread

' I would like to reiterate Ukraine’s commitment to peace.

None of us wants an endless war. Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.

We are ready to work fast to end the war, and the first stages could be the release of prisoners and truce in the sky — ban on missiles, long-ranged drones, bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure — and truce in the sea immediately, if Russia will do the same. Then we want to move very fast through all next stages and to work with the US to agree a strong final deal.

We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. And we remember the moment when things changed when President Trump provided Ukraine with Javelins. We are grateful for this.

Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive.

Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it in any time and in any convenient format. We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and solid security guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively."

Not sure if this has been discussed on here. Just released by Zelenskyy on X. Hopefully Russia will agree.

Let's hope this is the beginning of the end.

Stiff, I understand you may not support Starmer’s direction of travel in some policies. Are you saying you also don’t support the decision to improve our defence and work constructively with allies to protect Ukraine (and end the war)

I think that will fall int the category of questions that never get answered, Iam.

Yes, a great performance by our PM and King. Really showed how it should be done. I am sure KCIII will step up to the mark when Trump arrives. They are well prepared for such occasions. Better keep Anne away though. Maybe KS will get the Nobel prize.

Now why would you want to keep Princess Anne away, if Trump pays a visit to Britain?

I imagine she is more than able to put Trump in his place, and personally, I would just love to see her do so.

Now that I would love to see. I can just picture what she would do if he started wagging his finger at her grin

StoneofDestiny Tue 04-Mar-25 16:12:13

Starmer is exactly the right person in post for dealing with an over inflated ego like Trump and the extreme right wing of America. Trump really is dense and dangerous and more friend of Russia than of Europe. We need to step up and never think we can rely on the USA to hold up democratic and moral principles. (Seriously dread to think how we would fare if Boris Johnson or Liz Truss had been in post - both admirers of Trump and went to his Inauguration. Or if Farage had - so keen as he has been to work with Trump and spends more time with him than his constituents). For Trump - money is God. We need a leader who doesn’t think like that)

Watching Camilla over the years, I suspect that she will have the most difficulty trying not to laugh.

Oh dear, I think you may be right! He's not funny at all but he does have that effect on some people.

Yes, well done Sir Keir, you've proved to be a steady hand on the tiller and yes, well done Charles too, this is when the Monarchy comes into its own.

As my Gran used to say 'not funny ha ha, but funny peculiar'. The definitely fits the Orange one grin

Agree he did well. But he was advised what to say and do by his team plus various Government top civil servants and agencies.
He presented it well as expected from a KC.
Let hope he can keep this momentum up as he will be judged in the future for home politics not international ones.

Kings Counsel are extremely intelligent people. They prepare their complex cases quickly and withiut being advised what to say and do.
Starmer will be working co-operatively but won’t need or want anyone telling him to say or don
