You have done the world a great favour. Europe is now united in its support of Ukraine, showing that we can work together for good, the rest of the western world stands with us.
You have shown us that we can not rely on nor trust anyone but ourselves.
You have forced Farage to speak up and kill Reform once and for all.
You have shown the American voters your true colours and hopefully caused a brain drain from west to east across the Atlantic.
Thank you.

Hungary and Slovakia might be the flies in the ointment.

Grandmabatty Tue 04-Mar-25 11:50:14

At first I was a bit, "what?" But, having read your post, I heartily agree! Europe is closer and more organised than ever before. I do feel sorry for the many many Americans who didn't vote for him but are stuck with him.

If this does all work out as OP thinks, and please god it does, then I too thank POTUS Trump!

🙏🙏🙏

Yes, he's managed to unite the English and the French!

J52 Tue 04-Mar-25 12:09:26

Apparently Lindt chocolate owned by Swiss company have a manufacturing base in the USA. They export to Canada, so to avoid the tariffs they will export to Canada via their European factories.
This will of course cost jobs in the US. Will other companies do the same? Could be an own goal for Trump, maybe he doesn’t care.

Yes, he's managed to unite the English and the French!

Reviving the Auld Alliance of Scotland and France made in 1295, perhaps.

LauraNorderr Tue 04-Mar-25 12:13:17

That’s interesting J52. Let’s hope for enough own goals to mobilise Americans to depose their dictator and the world can breathe out again.

“Apart from electricity, 99% of natural gas imports to the US come from Canada. Canada also exports more than four million barrels of crude oil to the US per day, supplying some 20% of its total crude oil demand.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has threatened electricity restrictions if the US moves ahead with its tariffs.
"If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do anything, including cutting off their energy, with a smile on my face," Ford told NBC on Monday.

Apparently Canada is a bit miffed as well!

Isn’t it all just too ghastly. Trudeau spoke so eloquently yday.

Trump is not a world leader and he never will be. Neither is he a statesman or a politician. He is a grifter and a sexual predator. He said before the election that the reasons he wanted to be president were to pardon himself and others of their crimes, to get retribution on people he thought have wronged him in the past and to steal as much money as he can from the government and put it in his bank account. But made sure he left himself plenty of time to play golf.

Nicksmrs46 Wed 05-Mar-25 13:53:02

That’s the reason why he wants Canada as the 51st state , so he gets all the crude oil and electricity he wants without paying tariffs for it!

Some people continue to think the current leader of the USA is doing all this crazy stuff for the 'good of his country'..... NOT

His aims from the beginning are to turn the USA into a dictatorship like that of his friend Putin, and to enrich himself and all his friends.

Just as Chamberlain and Europe at the time couldn't appease Hitler, so no one will be able to appease Trump and his communist pals.

He has alienated all the USA's friends, and is being encouraged by Russia.

We in Canada are bracing for a military invasion when the USA decides that we are not bending low enough or fast enough to Trump's demands.

Seems unthinkable, but nothing and no one in the USA seems able to stop this corrupt power hungry man. angry angry

As someone who didn't vote for Trump either time, I saw his "true colors" many years ago. Too bad so many others still don't realize what's going on. They must be brain dead.

David49 Wed 05-Mar-25 14:38:13

If he damages his own economy the voters will pass judgement at the ballot box, as for Europe being united that’s a laugh, only UK and France are showing any interest.

Ukraine can’t win this war if the allies escalate the war to win back the land there really would be a risk of WW3.
The US has ruled that out, in my opinion rightly.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 05-Mar-25 14:55:23

Early days yet, but there is hope that europe will begin to pull together.

However Denmark will need help trying to hang on to Greenland. The greedy b……d said yesterday it is for “world” security - Ha! We no longer believe that Trump - you are no longer either dependable or predictable and I am inclined to believe that it has nothing to do with world security but everything to do with self enrichment from minerals and oil and gas.

You are all very optimistic about all those MAGA voters turning on Trump.

Remember the red neck MAGA voters are uneducated lobcocks with no idea where New York or Moscow are and would be hard pressed to recognise any country on a world map. You are all assuming they are educated internationalists like most Europeans, open to reason and explanation.

Most of Trumps supporters are so lost in conspiracy and Deep State myths, Trump will tell them that everything is going wrong because of all the conspiracy beliefs everyone has and that the Deep State is so entrenched it is undermining everything he does and that the only solution is for him to have a third term as President.

And they will believe him and agree to constitutional change and they will vote him in for a third term.

I had already put my thoughts on DT on another thread but agree so much with your views LauraNorderr. Fortunately he has shot himself in the foot, as the world was able to see his appalling behaviour (between a two year old in a temper tantrum and a bully )- and whatever he tries to do he cannot get that information cancelled or hidden so that he can pretend anything else.

Wonder if anyone has done any historical research of DT.? I see such close resemblance to another person in the past. Now who have we heard of who has paranoid attitudes, thinks that if they say something it becomes true, and that if you choose to you can walk into other countries and take over. Oh then of course they blame other groups of people for the excuse as to why they should take over? Oh, now I remember , there was that Adolf Hitler. Ah well if he is not actually genetically related to him, he obviously gets his ideas from such a person. Now as we already know what happened then it would be a good idea of dealing with DT sooner rather than later!!

I'm sure that the journalist who questioned President Zelenski as to why he wasn't wearing a suit, was planted by Trump to ask that question. I noticed that he wasn't wearing a suit when he met the King either. Do you think that Charles gave a fig about that? Of course he didn't. So good for Zelenski. He probably has many suits, but living in a bunker for 3 years they are not so suitable. (Sorry! Poor pun)

HousePlantQueen Wed 05-Mar-25 16:20:21

I agree that Trump has done us a favour. He has, hopefully, united Europe, and forced some to contribute more to their security and safety. He has also, sadly, illustrated just how selfish and isolated much of America is. Only USA citizens can do something about the situation they find themselves in, but as for reputation, USA is done for. When I see that nasty little mouth spouting dangerous nonsense, I don't know whether laugh or cry. I do know, however, that the more I hear,.the more relieved I am to be British and European.

The far-right journalist, who asked the question, was Brian Glenn. He is working for "Real America's Voice" as its chief White House correspondent. He is the boyfriend of Right-wing firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene.

We can thank Trump for uniting Europe and increasing our defence. We are living at a dangerous time. Trump.has ruffled the feathers of China and that's not a good thing.

Where on earth do you get your news from, David?

Hungary is not on board with the rest of Europe and I doubt Serbia is either, but it is most assuredly not only France and the UK who are showing any interest.

Canada is rightly "miffed", Denmark furious, as no-one except the people of Greenland have the right to decide their future. We have just signed a defence agreement with Finland, and before that with Norway.

Mexico is not delighted either, at the way things are going, nor is Panama.

And his Majesty of Jordan is probably "not amused" either!

Trump is celebrating what Dorothy L. Sayers called "Judas' holiday - try re-reading Busman's Honeymoon.

No-one is talking about escalating the war to win back the Russian occupied territories of Ukraine. What both Ukraine and the EU are talking about is securing a peace treaty with security guarantees that will prevent Russia starting a new war as soon as the ink on a peace treaty is dry. And of making sure that Europe starts taking steps to ensure that we can arm and protect ourselves in future, without help from so unstable a character as President Trump.

halfpint1 Wed 05-Mar-25 17:16:36

Trump seems to be modelling his system of government from the admiration of mafia rhetoric. He is surrounding himself with 'gratefull' under qualified controversial characters to carry out his bidding through fear. Look how many turned on him from the last time and how many ended up in prison as well.
Hopefully the tide may turn in the mid term elections next year when the Democrats may get the voters in their favour and hopefully we make it to then.

We dont often agree, but I have found myself agreeing with you more lately.

I think I agree with all of this post.
