You have done the world a great favour. Europe is now united in its support of Ukraine, showing that we can work together for good, the rest of the western world stands with us.
You have shown us that we can not rely on nor trust anyone but ourselves.
You have forced Farage to speak up and kill Reform once and for all.
You have shown the American voters your true colours and hopefully caused a brain drain from west to east across the Atlantic.
Thank you.

Thank you MaizieD for putting me straight.
As you say, sadly the result is the same though. No steel.

* I didn’t vote for Thatcher either.
A small tick for me.

You are all very optimistic about all those MAGA voters turning on Trump.

Remember the red neck MAGA voters are uneducated lobcocks with no idea where New York or Moscow are and would be hard pressed to recognise any country on a world map. You are all assuming they are educated internationalists like most Europeans, open to reason and explanation.

Most of Trumps supporters are so lost in conspiracy and Deep State myths, Trump will tell them that everything is going wrong because of all the conspiracy beliefs everyone has and that the Deep State is so entrenched it is undermining everything he does and that the only solution is for him to have a third term as President.

And they will believe him and agree to constitutional change and they will vote him in for a third term.

Hopefully he can’t change the constitution because that’s the only way he could run for a third term.

Musk can stand.

Musk can’t stand. He was born in South Africa.

I wonder what is happening in our security services.
Who is telling what to who at this point.
Are the US friend. Or foe?

If they told us it wouldn’t be a secret service would it.
Think about it.

Not entirely true. The planning permission has been given to Tata Steel for this.
The £1.25 billion investment in state-of-the-art electric arc furnace steel making and upgrades to the Port Talbot site will transform the industry and underpin the manufacturing sector for decades to come.

I believe that the blast furnaces at Scunthorpe are actually still operating? They are owned by a Chinese company, not Tata.

It would be a first if Europe unites. Some parts might but a lot will not.

Do you really think Trump won't change that rules? There's always Vance or plenty of others to build on Trumps legacy.

I have been reading and listening to a former CIA agent - David McCluskey - who said that there are 5 countries who up to the present work very closely together regarding security. They are the U.K., Australia, Canada, New Zealand and USA.

He is not convinced that this will change very much under Trump.

However, I would be very careful regarding Trump’s new partnership with Russia.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-Mar-25 11:26:36

P.S. The 5 countries are known as the 5 i’s

Very interesting Newsnight last night discussing that..

I always thought it was ‘Eyes’? As in spying.
But I suppose ‘i’ works = intelligence.

I knew it would be being discussed somewhere.

A state of the art electric furnace doesn't produce the same steel as does a a blast furnace. Forgive me if I'm hazy on detail, but one of the arguments I saw for continuing with blast furnace steel making was that it produced a better quality of steel. But a quick online search doesn't come up with any confirmation of that claim. I don't know if anyone here knows more?

Blast furnaces work with iron ore as their base and have high CO2 emissions, electric arcs recycle scrap metal and have low emissions. Blast furnaces need more labour to work them.

I was just pointing out that Tata made its decision on cost, not environmental concerns. I believe it is still operating blast furnace steel making in Europe somewhere. I suspect that trade barriers resulting from Brexit also played a part in their decision.

If he damages his own economy the voters will pass judgement at the ballot box, as for Europe being united that’s a laugh, only UK and France are showing any interest.

Ukraine can’t win this war if the allies escalate the war to win back the land there really would be a risk of WW3.
The US has ruled that out, in my opinion rightly.

The Baltic states which were once occupied by Russia are supporting Ukraine. They are still trying to reverse the damage Russia did. They are very anti Russia. That is why they belong to EU and NATO .

Cossy Fri 07-Mar-25 13:28:24

Well, according to the latest news, 20 world leaders are standing with Ukraine?

I dont know about anyone else, but soryy, it all seems so pitiful to me.
And as the article says, "fluid".

fancythat Fri 07-Mar-25 13:58:08

If you were Zelensky and the Ukrainians, with people dying, what would you really think about that.

fancythat Fri 07-Mar-25 13:59:06

I dont like to be the one pouring cold water, but I would be feeling sad if these wre my [only I presume] options.
