I was very encouraged by his speech. The Democrats reacted like sulky children.

I've made a big general point, Ronib.

That the severe cuts in Medicaid will stop expensive treatments including cancer for the poorest

This is Trump policy in action* and there are, as I alluded to, cuts in Education ahead as well, already also poorly funded.

There will be more.

Rosie I do your point and I think the whole language thing is completely ridiculous.

I have absolutely no issue with transgenders though, I know two. As I say labelling a whole cohort of people like this is just as bad as saying any other cohort or minority groups are ALL a danger to women.

Maybe blame govts and councils for being too quick to jump on the bandwagon of changing things.

I’m a women (not complete any longer haha) but prior to radical hysterectomy I had all the appropriate organs to conceive and give birth four times completely naturally. I am a woman, proud of being a woman, but frankly I really really don’t care what language other’s choose to use. I’ll call “them” them, she, he or by their given or assumed name. It does not bother me.

No Babs03 I really can’t. What I can see is a huge reluctance to understand Russia’s position. Much to my horror, the one liner on GB News seems to suggest that Russia thinks it may be at war with NATO countries… I was wondering when Putin would start up.

Why on earth would anyone want to understand Russia’s position.

I just truly do not understand? Russia re the aggressors, Putin thought he’d walk right in, sit right down and have Ykraine bow to him.

Putin is responsible for thousands of deaths, both Russian and Ukrainian.

Trump is not good for the world, he's only good for Trump and anyone who thinks otherwise is very blinkered. Instead of thinking in terms of the harm that Trump is doing to the US, think instead about who benefits. If you know in advance that something will destabilise the markets then you can make big money. If you know there's an announcement about crytocurrency that will cause a rise in it's value, you can make millions. If you have your own cryptocurrency you can take enormous bribes and backhanders from foreign countries without fear of it being traced. Best of all, if you are POTUS you can lay your own golden eggs with the flourish of a pen.

Trump is not overseeing social change.

Trump is actually overseeing social regression

👏👏👏👏👏👏

ronib Thu 06-Mar-25 11:30:14

Cossy how many more thousands have to die? Zelensky thinks he can continue the fight for years ahead so no bar on numbers for him?
Putin was caught out when the USA supported Ukraine and extended what was initially planned as a short incursion. Putin has been quiet so far - does he want to extend the war to NATO countries? I hope not. It’s the stuff of nightmares.

Wyllow3 Thu 06-Mar-25 11:39:42

You switch topic Ronib when attempts are made to point out the promised trillions of cuts will have severe consequences on US citizens.

(there are plenty of open threads on Ukraine)

Since this thread is on Trumps speech, I suggest a little fact checking.

And do you support the medicaid cuts?

foxie48 Thu 06-Mar-25 11:53:34

Zelensky doesn't want to continue the war, he wants peace with some guarantee that Putin is not going to come back with a stronger army in a year or two's time. Trump can give him that guarantee without it costing the US, he can sell US arms to Ukraine and Europe whilst protecting his own military capacity to engage on other fronts should it be necessary. It is completely unnecessary to disrupt US alliances with countries that fought next to the US after 7/11. Look it up, Ronib and you will see how many countries stood with the US, it's about 50 in total, I believe. There are ways of changing the focus in alliances without completely wrecking them but Trump is choosing to do damage, so ask, who is gaining from this? It's not the American people, polls on Monday showed only 4% of Americans supported Russia, yes, many Americans want an end to the war (as do most Europeans and Ukrainians) but that doesn't mean they want to see Ukraine thrown to the dogs! In a recent poll only 30% thought the US was giving too much military aid, with 30% thinking it was too little. Trump's view is not completely in tune with the population. Look at a variety of polls, not just one, which is why I haven't posted a link.

It’s not in the scheme of things the most important issue for anyone in the UK. I hope with 350 million people in the USA some workable healthcare system cuts through. It could be the catalyst for a better and fairer healthcare economy. It’s upto you guys to push for it. We have our struggles with the NHS.

Casdon Thu 06-Mar-25 11:59:19

Conservative Woman would have the NHS privatised in an instant ronib, why are you worrying about that?

ronib Thu 06-Mar-25 11:59:46

I don’t care about polls. foxie48 I am listening to the comments coming out of Russia and suggest you do the same.

Isolating yourself from popular opinion by only reading things that accord with your own internal narrative ronib?

I know. Anybody can comment on any post on Gransnet ronib, that’s how it works.

foxie48 Thu 06-Mar-25 12:04:41

Comments coming out of Russia in English tend to be propaganda. when talking about what Americans think I like to use a number of different American sources.

Casdon no not at all. A relative living abroad has contacted me to express surprise for the attacks on this forum. She pointed out that her EU government is in complete disarray and don’t expect much from them.
I should get back to clearing the loft …. Or maybe gardening.

It’s ok to have a different view.

We just agree to disagree!

In what way was that comment relevant to the discussion ronib, you’ve lost me?

Wyllow3 Thu 06-Mar-25 12:14:36

To my mind, its whataboutery to distract from the affect that cuts and other massive rapid and ill thought out changes affecting US citizens. Distract, get people talking out something else.....

We are discussing Trumps speech, aren't we?

Wyllow3 Thu 06-Mar-25 12:15:14

Look at what has been done to care for Veterans.
www.reuters.com/world/us/department-veterans-affairs-cut-80000-jobs-part-trump-cuts-2025-03-05/

"Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the job cuts marked an escalation of a "full-scale, no-holds-barred assault on veterans" by Trump and Musk that would put veterans' health benefits in "grave danger."

Wyllow3 Thu 06-Mar-25 12:30:04

This is the democrat reaction to Trumps speech. After some general remarks, Elissa Slotkin deals with Trumps policies one by one and critiques them, including the cuts, and effectively critiquing threats to the constitiution and democracy itself without getting over dramatic

It’s 11 minutes but well worth listening to.

Don’t worry Trump is on track to achieve more good than we can recognise at the moment. We are very blinkered here.

We are very blinkered here - speak for yourself ronib. It seems that your support for Trump is growing by the day.
European countries were aware of the need to increase defence spending, as well as work co-operatively. A forward thinking US President would support that whereas the bully boy shouts, threatens, is rude to everyone. Is that the role model we want for our grandsons

Elegran Thu 06-Mar-25 13:41:34

I think we will hear more about Elissa Slotkin over the next few years. Thank you for that link, Iam
