This isn’t the world I want to live in.

And I’m not the only one. So many friends, of a similar age to me, voicing the same thoughts.

So depressing. The world we knew, the values we held deeply, the hope for the future of our grandchildren - all gone. Destroyed.

These aren’t suicidal thoughts being expressed, more a feeling that we are have perhaps outlived our time and would ‘go gentle that good night’ when the time comes.

At least we have good leaders in President Trump

Yes - a 'good' guy who mocks the disabled, insults and clearly despises all women, who is a racist, who is a fascist, who mocks American military heroes and who worships one god - money. And just to cap it all, publicly insults Zelensky to show his loyalty to ex KGB 'man' Putin.

Seriously - check your definition of 'good'.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Amen to that!

A very good mantra to follow.

The Serenity Prayer, a wonderful piece of advice. But finding the courage and wisdom is hard. I've reached the wisdom part in older age but I'm not sure I haven't bypassed the courage bit. Perhaps if everybody lived with the mantra "Do no harm" then everything good would have a chance to fall into place. But I don't think anything could change the hearts of the Putins and Trumps of this world.

It is depressing and difficult to avoid doom scrolling.

And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
(Matthew 24:6)

This is not new. I agree that both Putin and Trump are dangerous men, and they are joined by other dangerous men, such as Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un, but I don't think WW3 is imminent. We are being softened up for more spending on defence, which will shore up flagging economies worldwide, and talk of conscription and so on is spreading fear, so populations will accept it.

I'm not blindly optimistic, but neither do I think that we should stop enjoying our lives. It may be that in 5-10 years time, Putin (who by then will be a very old man) will be in a position to invade another country, and if that happens, the odds are that the other country will have rearmed too. Sands shift all the time. The odds on Putin invading the UK are vanishingly small, and we are cementing allegiances with other democracies that he has arguably been working to weaken.

David49 Mon 17-Mar-25 14:58:35

Not invaded but if war is escalated the threat of Putin directing missiles at the UK is real or sabotage against our North Sea infrastructure. The way Putin is behaving it would not surprise me if the US restored arms supply to Ukraine

Anniebach Mon 17-Mar-25 16:32:36

Is it wise to live with ‘what if’s’ ?

Barleyfields Mon 17-Mar-25 16:34:37

No, if you have no control over what may or may not happen. There lies madness.

Doodledog Mon 17-Mar-25 16:45:14

Agreed, Anniebach and Barleyfields.

If Putin directs missiles at the UK it's game over, and he knows that, so it is extremely unlikely that he will do so.

nanna8 Tue 18-Mar-25 05:56:44

More like the Middle East I would think. Putin will come to an arrangement with the help of his American mate.

ronib Tue 18-Mar-25 06:35:37

Sadly the ceasefire in Gaza failed just now so The American can’t do the impossible even if he thinks so. I don’t think Putin will be easily persuaded.

Claremont Tue 18-Mar-25 21:16:00

The ceasefire has not 'failed'! The genocide continues.

You sometimes wonder whether Netanyahu has any idea of the anti Semitism his actions are causing across the world. Innocent Jewish people are being targeted left right and centre.

Anniebach Wed 19-Mar-25 01:41:54

You are giving a reason for antisemitism nanna8 ?

nanna8 Wed 19-Mar-25 06:57:40

Not a reason, an excuse. A vile excuse. I don’t know the situation over there but here things are not looking good for Jewish people.

Yes nanna8 a vile excuse, in the UK children of Jews attending their schools are afraid to wear their school uniforms
in the streets, this was said by Moureen Lipman early last year,
graves had to be guarded too .

The ceasefire has not 'failed'! The genocide continues.

Stage one of the ceasefire ended several weeks ago.

All parties involved have failed to agree on Stage two, in particular the release of all living hostages and the bodies of dead hostages, back to their loved ones.

I do not condone this latest attack. but and it’s a big but Hamas started this knowing full well that Israel would finish it.

There was never going to be a happy ending.

All involved in this conflict have my thoughts and prayers.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 19-Mar-25 08:45:11

Netanyahu was never going to enter stage 2.
