Is Trump’s behaviour and demands becoming completely out of order as the repercussions for non compliance increase. Is it not the behaviour of an unbalanced meglamaniac. To treat Canada as his to take just because they share a border and have commodities and resources the US could use is beyond belief. As a Sovereign country Canada isn’t having it and because of retaliation the Orange one has once more thrown his toys out of his pram. The King is head of the Commonwealth of which Canada is an important and valued part.Hmmmmm!!!!

The EU was and remains protectionist hence our problems having Brexited.

Government by fits of pique - wonderful.

I wonder when POTUS started intensely disliking Canada. He's a small, prideful, spiteful, person, easily made jealous of nothing.

I wouldn’t call it free fall, but it’s certainly dived.

Yes. About 10% in 3 weeks.

From the Nov 6, 2024 (election day) 43700 dow to yesterday 41500 dow, it seems the market is correcting. However it's certainly not a free fall. In fact the dow is only off 135 over last 6 months.

Lyndie Sat 15-Mar-25 18:08:30

Trump is not happy with the 41 billion trade deficit with Canada.

Maremia Sun 16-Mar-25 14:08:46

Trump is never happy, unless he is being praised by scared sycophants.

Less than 1% down?

Best still to look through months, in my opinion. The graph of the dow, since 6 months show only 135 down. Many ups and downs between.

POTUS is using the dow well as a smokescreen, attempting to obscure.

Canada cannot win this tariff war.

If we all stop buying American goods, and continue to buy Canadian, it should help.

Trump has also threatened to increase tarifs on goods from the EU - good luck with that one!

He is a bully, and if he has been less to the fore for the last few days, I have not noticed any diminuition, it may be because people have started telling him, he can't have everything he wants.

And talking of state visits - I doubt he will be welcome in Denmark, as long as he is trying to grab Greenland. A very tricky situation, as King Frederik X is fond of Greenland, and many Greenlanders love him, so it will be interesting to see what Denmark's Foreign Office does about inviting Trump.

Canada cannot win this tariff war.

I'd not count on Canada losing the tariff war.

Each country have what the other needs.

New to Gransnet, but I would have loved to have just given you a thumbs up as I totally agree with you - we need to stand together and support Canada being in the Commonwealth. This will bring us back closer to Europe - as David McWilliams said in his latest podcast - JD Vance (and I won't repeat what he described him as) has done more than any European to reunite Germany. One German company this week saw their share price jump over 70% - unfortunately they are arms manufacturers. It is so sad to think that in the 21st Century, that war is back in Europe, and who knows where it is going to end, and all because of the greed of men!!

If it wasn't sooo preposterous a lie, folks would actually think that the pooor USA was being taken advantage of by Canada.

Trump is a lying loose cannon directing lies, accusations, and threats liberally in every direction, including at folks in his own country.

He just the other day said that criticisms of him by the media should be illegal.

Canada tried hard initially to avoid a tariff war through diplomatic negotiations, but Trump would have none of it.

Lately he has said that the USA doesn't need Canada. If that is so, why is he threatening us with annexation.
If economic tariffs don't work, is a military invasion possible? With this insane man, don't think it isn't possible!

We have the natural resources he wants~~

*We didn't start this, but we also are not going to back down from the fight.

Wyllow3 Sun 16-Mar-25 20:31:59

I found it was difficult tat Trump could say that about the media, and rocketship, but was shocked that its true

"Donald Trump expanded on his threats to the media on Friday, suggesting actions of the press should be deemed illegal and subject to investigation.

“I believe that CNN and MS-DNC, who literally write 97.6% bad about me, are political arms of the Democrat [sic] party and in my opinion, they’re really corrupt and they’re illegal, what do they do is illegal,” the president said during a contentious speech at the Department of Justice.

“These networks and these newspapers are really no different than a highly paid political operative,” Trump continued, claiming that CNN and MSNBC are corrupt.

“And it has to stop, it has to be illegal, it’s influencing judges and it’s really changing law, and it just cannot be legal. I don’t believe it’s legal, and they do it in total coordination with each other,” he added"

They've started taking action on it - I've put more over on the Trump thread

and this is the country that lectures us on freedom of speech!

Wyllow3 Sun 16-Mar-25 20:33:54

(never mind the garbled Trump-speak!)

Just watching American country music (one of the good things to come out of the U.S.)
I’d love to know what Canadian products we can buy. It’s a pity I can’t afford to replace my Apple phone with a non-U.S. brand. 🙄

So many posts on GN are total nonsense, the US is not in free fall
The Dow Jones is higher than a year ago, the NASDAQ is 10% higher, even the hated Tesla shares are 50 % higher than a year ago, all that’s happened is that the bubble has deflated somewhat. Some speculators/gamblers have lost money, tough I’m not going to mourn their losses.

rocketship Mon 17-Mar-25 01:16:23

Trump has now shut down Voice of America.

“The decision to dismantle one of America’s greatest national assets will inflict profound harm on the U.S. image, its global interests, and the promotion of democratic values — damage that no adversary could ever achieve,” Elez Biberaj, who briefly served as Voice of America’s acting director and retired in 2023, said in a social media post.

Sorry..... Your post is soooo upside down, I can't believe you may actually have typed it with a straight face!!!

All the Canadians I have ever come across have disliked the US. Nothing new there, just more depth and reason for their dislike. Same as so many French people dislike the British but like Australians. Historical stuff. Amusing in some ways.

Grandmabatty Mon 17-Mar-25 07:23:07

Actually French people are very fond of us Scots. It used to be known as The Auld Alliance. Talking in generalisations doesn't help anyone.

Parsley3 Mon 17-Mar-25 07:31:56

I think that the Auld Alliance is only known about in Scotland. Count us out when it comes to animosity regarding the French.

All my statements I made above are true and up to date, we will see what happens next

Norah Mon 17-Mar-25 17:07:43

The Dow Jones is up 225 already today.

Six months is + 107.

Everything is still fine, may not stay that way - Gamblers and traders may lose if they buy in a brazenly stupid manner.

Casdon Mon 17-Mar-25 17:51:19

Everything isn’t looking still fine Norah. To quote CNN, the warning lights are flashing red.

The markets are definitely jittery, and unless the tariff fiasco ends, they will drop.

The markets are all over the place, jittery for sure. However, the market is always a gamble, a choice. Sell shares, put cash in secure savings because POTUS tariffs (and other agendas) are quite worrisome.
