Nicola Sturgeon, Former First Minister

I think former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has probably done the best thing for herself by stating she won't stand again. It's hard to see who could live up to all she has done for Scots, but we have a large pool of talent and there is always hope. As both Health Minister and later, in the top job, she oversaw many policies which have improved the lot of me and my wider family, old and young.

Abolishing prescription charges, free bus travel for over 60s, baby boxes, full mitigation of the cruel Bedroom Tax and the Scottish Child Payment. These have all made our lives easier.

For me, personally, her daily Covid broadcasts got me through the pandemic, aided and abetted by the lighter moments provided when the late, great Janey Godley published comic takeoffs, which surely came close - at times - to what Ms Sturgeon was actually thinking.

The SNP don't take seats in the House of Lords, but in any fair world, Ms Sturgeon would now be heading for a career in diplomacy or international relations... if she wanted it.

It's time for the Scottish legal authorities to bring Operation Branchform (investigation into SNP finances) to conclusion, or at least explain to the public (and frustrated judges, fellow legal experts, media and even the original complainant) what's taking so long.

Not only does the delay now threaten to affect the upcoming Scottish election, it is holding back the progress of a woman in her prime who has consistently given her all for Scotland, and deserves to be free to go wherever her intellect and undoubted talents take her next.

Why are judges and other lawyers frustrated at the time the investigation is taking?

Dear God.

Good riddance.

I have lost the ability to decide whether something is sarcasm or genuine.

She's a very divisive person as well can see on here. I feel she was a voice of calm during the pandemic when Westminster was behaving badly. She led Scotland well through that. Her social policies have, in the main, been helpful but some didn't work. I think her self identification policy led to the debacle in Fife. Regardless, I wish her well in the future.

Education, worse Scottish health service worse, ferries, the gender nonsense, all under the SNP.

valdavi Wed 12-Mar-25 18:56:59

She is divisive Grandmabatty, I've alsays admired her, DH really dislikes her.

I agree 100%with OP's assessment.

🤣 🤣 Ain’t that the truth!

I can’t wait to see the back of the woman, who by the way is still under investigation by police. She’s presided over rising drug deaths, the worst in Europe, failed to close the attainment gap in education and overseen Scottish education tumble down the PISA ratings when once upon a time education was a shining beacon to the rest of the UK. Her daily Covid broadcasts failed to produce any significant difference from the rest of the UK and she devastated children’s education by her insistence on keeping schools and nurseries closed. As for the ridiculous gender ID issue, I’m just glad the scales are now falling from people’s eyes as they realise they’ve been duped.

Totally agree Sue Donim and grannysyb. What annoys me most is the fact although she is not stepping down until next year she is still meant to be representing her constituents but is too busy book writing, appearing on various TV programmes and other lucrative "projects". I have only seen her in the Scottish Parliament once since the New Year (or maybe longer)

eazybee Wed 12-Mar-25 22:21:56

A dreadful legacy. The calculated destruction of the excellent Scottish Education system; her behaviour during Covid, and the transgender issue which is causing so many problems.
And she walks away without contrition, in the hope of a lucrative, influential post.

OldFrill Wed 12-Mar-25 23:24:07

Sturgeon, stabbed her mentor in the back, then her husband, and now her country.
Soon gone, best forgotten.

Aveline Thu 13-Mar-25 01:07:00

Good riddance to her.

Homestead62 Thu 13-Mar-25 01:11:00

I know her memoir comes out in August, but do wonder if something else is coming down the road.

M0nica Thu 13-Mar-25 06:13:40

Are you a publicty spokesperson for NS lilysperson?

Your post is pure boilerplate PR guff

Galaxy Thu 13-Mar-25 06:24:03

It hasnt particularly been effective PR though smile

Grantanow Thu 13-Mar-25 09:28:07

Reading the OP one might be deluded into thinking she walks on water.

Granniesunite Thu 13-Mar-25 09:41:00

I liked her and voted for her.

I’m very keen to see hear what the PF in Scotland has to say regarding the current investigations.

The silence from them is deafening.

Bridie22 Thu 13-Mar-25 09:43:26

For the harm she has to to womens rights in Scotland, glad to see the back of her.

Maremia Thu 13-Mar-25 14:10:23

Her leadership during the Covid lockdowns was exceptional, but then of course we only had Johnson to compare her with.
Operation Branchform is taking years to investigate what? A complex conspiracy, multiple murders, Russian interference, state sanctioned genocide? No, it's supposed to be investigating fraud. Fraud, worth millions? Not even one. And it is taking year upon year. And that investigation needed the dramatic widely publicised, as if the media knew in advance, blue murder forensics tent? Someone is at it. Not convinced it was Nicola Sturgeon.

Cateq Thu 13-Mar-25 14:24:51

Nicola Sturgeon is like marmite you either love her or hate her. I’m most definitely not a fan. Her actions regarding self identification has caused too much controversy and concerns for women

PamQS Thu 13-Mar-25 14:28:21

I think Sturgeon demonstrated an understanding of leadership which Johnson lacked, since his political education seems to have been drawn from studying Roman history!

I think it would be quite boring to step down from being leader of the SNP to being an MSP, if no charges are to be brought then the investigation should be concluded so she can use her gifts in a different role.

Maremia Thu 13-Mar-25 14:30:11

Yes, should have been concluded ages ago. Perhaps the point was to keep her in political limbo, as it has done.

Mollygo Thu 13-Mar-25 15:11:07

I thought she sounded convincing during Covid, but her attitude to women, displayed in her stance on self ID etc, her actions re Alec Salmond and the strange matter about her husband are what I remember her for.

OhOhOh Thu 13-Mar-25 15:12:00

Completely agree with all of this. Sturgeon has single handedly done more damage and harm to the rights of women of Scotland than anyone else has ever done. Good riddance to her.
