I thought the War of Independence was to break free of a Parliament far away and, more importantly, to get away from Monarchy.
Now the US is in the tyrannical grip of HRH King Donald.
How did that happen?

Vance spurns Trump on he was as viscious as Trump at the Zelensky interview, when something happens to Trump he's gettiing on, he will be as bad. Americans are our allies and Its horrible to see how Trump and co are turning on the West. This is an awful period for them but it will pass. You need a long spoon to sup with the devil.

People in America who have been paying attention know how Trump's wannabe kingship came about. It started with a corrupt Republican Congress who had two chances to impeach him, stop his deviant behavior and end his presidency. That was the signal for Trump to go forward and keep lying and breaking the law until now he is so outrageously out of control that our country is being destroyed. In true dictator form, Trump has most government workers petrified to disagree with him. He has an enemies list and has spent his presidency so far retaliating against anyone who has crossed him even years ago. I don't know why the people who voted for him are suddenly shocked by what's going on. As far as I'm concerned they should be ashamed of themselves. Everyone is suffering now because of their gullibility.

Wouldn’t fancy Starmer or Lammy’s chances then. Supporting Kamala. Tut tut.

Does Trump want to take over Canada so that an enlarged Canada ie Canadian United States would be part of the Commonwealth? He could try taking over even more countries. shock

Trump is being played by Putin and he can't see it. Wait for the explosion when he finally realises

Do you think if Trump takes over Gaza he may call it Trumpton. He may even employ Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub as his fire crew.

I wish Trump and Putin would just retire, go on a world cruise, spend time with their grandchildren and take up a hobby which doesn’t involve world domination…

Someone - on gransnet I think - suggested recently that Trump aspires to being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. That's why he is trying to broker a deal between Russia and Ukraine and why he is interfering in the Israel / Gaza conflict.
He delights in anything that makes him feel special. He was most put out that Zelensky met King Charles soon after their horrible clash in the Oval Office as it has taken the shine off his own invitation for a state visit. I despair of what he might do next!

I wouldn’t agree with you on that wibbly but it’s true the US is going through a very very bad patch!

wibblywobblywobblebottom Wed 19-Mar-25 16:44:50

The US....... good riddance to bad rubbish.

Don't forget the obesity.

How did that happen?

It happened basically because Trump mounted an election campaign that appealed to different groups in the US: those who either have no time or inclination or perhaps lack the ability to study the details of the electoral programme.

Those who have always as a matter of principle voted for his party, and don't look too closely at the man running for president,

Those who were genuinely impressed by his first term of office.

Plus the fact that the opposition did not manage to put forward a good candidate in time.

And New Yorkers, and the East Coast traditions....and those who welcome "difference" as regards race and cultures...."....

maybe school swap could swap with a variety....

There are so many "Americas" coming out other fiction and non fiction on Netflix for example.

It's a country so vast and with so many different climates and histories- difficult for any British native to understand. This is reflected in the differing statutes- some states have the death penalty, for example, and some do not.
I would suggest that the views of many Californians might be at odds with some people in the Midwest,or Florida.

Etoile2701 Wed 19-Mar-25 14:47:19

I despair!

Wyllow3 Wed 19-Mar-25 14:38:10

Surely a definite slice of life in the USA but also so many different ones?

I watched the first episode of School Swap on Channel 4 simply because I hoped it might provide an insight into the American way of life - although of course it is very huge and probably different in different places.

What jumped out at me was.....

- the casual attitude to guns
- the mindless affinity to Christianity with seemingly no depth or substance
- the emphasis on competitiveness and sport and teh need to win/be top dog
- the superficial bonhomie
- the racism
- the need to be part of a tribe.

I guess some of this goes towards understanding the mindset that allows a subhuman like Trump to receive the popular vote.

Ditto… and agree wholeheartedly!

I suppose his son will be his successor then. Wouldn’t surprise me .

Which son? I imagine his youngest would be his choice

What a refreshing difference to hear Mark Carney yesterday; an educated, intelligent, calm and patriotic politician. Listening to his reasonable and reasoned responses to the press, I reflected that Canada has made a wise choice.

I couldn't agree more...

They obviously all fantasise about being monarchs with absolute rule, belonging to a royal dynasty and so living the palatial lifestyle to the max.
