He remembers it well. Here he is on the subject, “Our army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports”
Colour me confused, airports during the Boston tea party?
It started appearing in parts of the press later yesterday - headlines along the lines of "Trump accepts King Charles' invitation to join Commonwealth". (as associate)
Problem is, there is no evidence from the Palace or Downing Street an invitation has ever been issued
Press this morning headlines
DM "Exposed: Secret offer King Charles is planning to make to Donald Trump that would make America ROYAL again"
FT "Trump says he would be happy for US to become ‘associate’ Commonwealth member
US president posted Sun news story that referred to a supposed ‘secret offer’ King Charles is due to extend"
Times "Trump embraces rumour of US joining Commonwealth: ‘I love King Charles’
Suggestions that Britain will invite America to be an associate member of the group of nations have been welcomed by the president"
An article in Yahoo seems to give a hint about tis origin
A member of the Royal Commonwealth Society told the Mail that the possibility of America making entry into the Commonwealth is “being discussed at the highest levels” as “a wonderful move that would symbolize Britain's close relationship with the U.S
“Donald Trump loves Britain and has great respect for the Royal Family, so we believe he would see the benefits of this. Associate membership could, hopefully, be followed by full membership, making the Commonwealth even more important as a global organization,” the person added.
My immediate reaction was "this is a fake" and a nasty one at that, what about Canada.
No comment whatsoever on th story from the Palace or Downing Street, personally I think its bad to publish rumours as unfounded as this.

Perhaps the rumour is true and this is designed to trump Trump.
Instead of him taking over Canada he'd be part of one big happy Commonwealth of Nations.
On the other hand, it could backfire and all the other countries might decide to leave if the USA joins.
Perhaps he never read of the "Boston tea party"?
Maizie I read about this in several publications where it is briefly mentioned but I copied this one from The Mail Online. I don't know who was floating the idea but the inference is that the late Queen was in favour. It's a mystery to me as well.
The Commonwealth proposal was originally floated in Trump's first term, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, who Trump adored
Now the British are reviving the plan to extend the invitation with the hope the King will personally make the case to Trump when the president and first lady make their state visit to the UK later this year.

Well, Alllira, I'd quite like GB to leave if the USA joins....
Honestly, does Trump not remember what happened on July 4, 1776?

😂
Well, not sure that's possible but I do take your point!

I have just read that the late Queen offered membership of the Commonwealth to Trump in 2017, so the precedent has been set.
Hmmm. where did you read that?
I can't believe that the late Queen would have been so unwise... It's clear from what Silverbrooks has posted that membership isn't in the gift of the Head of the Commonwealth. The most she could have done is suggest that the US applied for membership. Though why she should do that is a mystery to me. The Commonwealth was devised to hold together Britain's ex colonies and soften the blow of losing the Empire. It's over 200 years since the US was in any way connected to the UK.
Firstly I’d like to say I don’t believe in any so called special relationship and haven’t done for a considerable time. It’s a figment of our imagination.
Secondly, Trump is now a de facto dictator. The Republicans are not taking any action against his unconstitutional activities and he is rampaging out of control. We need to make our own way, rebuilding relationships with Europe and forging new relationships with old friends in the Commonwealth. The last thing I want is Trump in the Commonwealth.
Many of our commonwealth countries want/ed complete independence from us and the commonwealth.
There is a difference between becoming a Republic but remaining within the Commonwealth and leaving the Commonwealth altogether.
The majority of Commonwealth countries are republics so the Monarch is not their Head of State.

We could start wearing the slogan baseball caps so beloved by Trump. images.app.goo.gl/Pf3RS6vffakqN7vi7
Or the hat that says "Immigrants make America Great"....Etsy has any option covered...

Ah, found it quickly in LBC
"This wouldn’t be the first time such a move was proposed, the late Queen is said to have offered Commonwealth membership to Mr Trump during his 2017 state visit"
Again, its the difference between an offer and it was said that ..." (never, said by whom......)
all she could have done at the most was invite Trump to apply.

I think any rumours no matter how weird gain traction because fact really is stranger than fiction with Trump. But of course there really is only one King as far as Trump is concerned and that is King Donald.
Thank you Silverbrooks. Your description of the actual process shows what rubbish the rumours are!
Nothing he says adds up.
Is is not up to the King.
•For eligible countries (and America might be eligible due its historic constitutional association with Britain up to 1776), there is a membership process which has to be followed once the formal expression of interest to join is triggered. This entails the following:
• An informal assessment undertaken by the Secretary-General following an expression of interest by an aspirant country
• Consultation by the Secretary-General with member states
• An invitation to the interested country to make a formal application
• A formal application presenting evidence of the functioning of democratic processes and popular support in that country for joining the Commonwealth.
* The procedure also sets out that the application would thereafter be considered by Heads of Government at the next CHOGM and, if they reach consensus on accepting it, that country would then join the Commonwealth and be invited to attend subsequent meetings.

It is alarming to see how many reports of this are appearing online. I am beginning to worry that there may be some truth in this.
But they are all repeating the unsubstantiated rumour, nothing changed at all.
I think it's a slow news day.
Downing Street and the Palace wise not to comment on unsubstantiated rumours that creates its own mess, which is what some may have intended.

It would be good. Trump won’t be there forever.
Why would it be good? Many of our commonwealth countries want/ed complete independence from us and the commonwealth.
I just think those days are gone, we need good relationships with other countries and good trade links, in our own right, I don’t Trumps America has anything to offer anyone bar bother. I cannot see anything positive being done towards closer relationships with while King T is on the throne.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. With Trump’s unpredictability better to entice him with something to keep him in our favour. We probably need a long spoon though.

I can see how Trump might like to join the Commonwealth after all he has Scottish/German ancestry and the Royals have Scottish/German ancestry too. However I don't think he would be welcomed and I think this is yet more fantasising and wishful thinking from a madman.
America is in a far worse state economically than it was in November when Trump became president. The pound is stronger against the dollar than it has been for years.Me too! It’s complete madness and would have to had been discussed between the King and the PM and then the PM and Parliament surely?
Well definitely the PM and the King!
This is a US response (its not on CNN or mainstream) which to me just shows its a Daily Mail rumour
www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-03-21/trump-says-us-joining-commonwealth-nations-sounds-good-to-me
"Trump was responding on Friday to a US Sun article based on a Daily Mail report that the British monarch could pitch Trump on joining the Commonwealth as an “associate member” during an upcoming state visit to the UK.
“I Love King Charles. Sounds good to me!” Trump wrote.
While Buckingham Palace declined to comment, a person familiar with the process said Commonwealth membership isn’t a matter for the monarch. The prime minister’s office, which is coordinating the state visit invitation, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment."
