The true colours of Trumps regime coming out re Ukraine now?

Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy to Russia, quoted in an interview:

"Witkoff, who met Putin 10 days ago, said the Russian president had been "gracious" and "straight up" with him.

Putin told him, he added, that he had prayed for Trump after an assassination attempt against him last year. He also said Putin had commissioned a portrait of the US president as a gift and Trump was "clearly touched by it".

During the interview, Witkoff repeated various Russian arguments, including that Ukraine was "a false country" and asked when the world would recognise occupied Ukrainian territory as Russian

Witkoff is leading the US ceasefire negotiations with both Russia and Ukraine but he was unable to name the five regions of Ukraine either annexed or partially occupied by Russian forces."

True face of attitudes despite weeks of pressure in Ukraine to concede to mineral rights in order to bargain for cease fire?

*The article headlined with an accusation by Witkoff accusing Starmer of "posturing like Churchill" in his work with other European leaders trying to work on a "group of the willing" to provide back up to hold a ceasefire.

This attack on Europe doesn't surprise me - part of the Trump armoury of the put down and divide and rule, and small thanks for Starmers role in keeping Zelensky talking after the bullying at the hands of trump and Vance.

On this, Witkoff said, "I think it’s a combination of a posture and a pose and a combination of also being simplistic. There is this sort of notion that we have all got to be like [British wartime prime minister] Winston Churchill. Russians are going to march across Europe. That is preposterous by the way. We have something called Nato that we did not have in World War Two"

As if we weren't aware of this - we are working within the confines of NATO.

Starmer this morning did not rise to the bait "Asked if the PM would deny that he is posturing, the spokesperson said Starmer was focused on the substance of the operational planning phase of the coalition of the willing"

That Chinese curse, 'May you live in interesting times'. Danger all around, as we re-learn who to trust.

There are several bits particularly stand out, but the USA backing

Witkoff repeated various Russian arguments, including that Ukraine was "a false country - thats just crawling to Putin?

As for the love in on the portrait, how sick can it get...

Maremia Mon 24-Mar-25 15:16:31

Sick to us, but it worked with the Narcissist, as Putin had calculated.

AGAA4 Mon 24-Mar-25 15:28:11

Putin is very manipulative. He is appealing to Trump's huge ego and it's working.
It seems that the people closest to Trump seem to be quite ignorant. The envoy couldn't name the regions in Ukraine. Vance and Musk also don't bother to research before making incorrect statements.

Dictators love to be worshipped, from Saddam to Stalin they love their statues and portraits, they see themselves as Gods so this will always go down well.
To most normal people it reeks to high heaven.

AGAA4 Mon 24-Mar-25 16:31:29

It's bad news for Ukraine when the US say it's a "false country". These are Putin's words and he is claiming it is still part of Russia.
I doubt the US will be too bothered if Putin gets his way.

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Mar-25 19:01:13

Indeed, it could have been first uttered by Trump not Putin!

Historically Putin has a point about the Ukraine which gained independence, following a popular referendum, in 1991 after the dissolution of the USSR.

Whether he has a moral right to reclaim the Ukraine as part of Russia is another matter.

Morals do not seem to figure in either Trump or Putin's administration as neither of them seem to have any.

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Mar-25 19:37:15

Good point re how/when became Independent, I didn't know exactly when. Estonia also became an Independent state in 1991...presumably Putin considers them all "false". But Ukraine has the valuable coastline for a party landlocked Russia and very mineral rich.

A disgusting carve up going on, territory, mineral rights...😡

There is an interesting Youtube series in which a journalist translates the news in several Russian newspapers- therefore giving the Russian perspective without any embellishment.

I can't help thinking that the Russians just think Trump is an idiot who is walking into a trap...

Quite… Trump falls for flattery every time and BELIEVES it. First rule of the spy ( Putin was KGB) … get the oppositions to trust you!

He is an idiot. Doesn’t read, gets others to do his work for him. Pretty sure the rumour that his father got someone else to take his exams for him is true!
As for being an astute businessman… 6 Bankruptcies and a myriad of lost court cases prove that a lie!
He is a clever Liar and Con man.. and maybe, just maybe, some of his voters are now beginning to have the blindfolds pulled from their eyes?

mum2three Tue 25-Mar-25 18:10:10

Trump seems to approve of people having empires. This is what the Ukraine conflict is all about....and is why Putin must not be allowed to succeed.

Rula Tue 25-Mar-25 18:28:00

Trump has risen to the highest position in the country. Somehow. He can't be a total idiot. Even though he does appear to be one most of the time.

I see NASA are thanking and congratulating him for getting the stranded astronauts down . So that's one good thing

M0nica Tue 25-Mar-25 18:32:51

I understood that there is evidence that Trump has been in hock to the Russians for some decades. As a man so often described as transactional in his dealings. Now is pay back time.

Surely today's Churchill equivalent is Zelensky, himself. 'Cometh the time, Cometh the man.'

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 25-Mar-25 20:18:22

discuss.

Well, of course they did.

Had they not, a sweep of the Presidential pen could shut down NASA.

Putin prayed? Putin ! prayed? To whom did he pray, I wonder.

Well there are big cuts

"NASA may have to cancel major space missions due to budget cuts. NASA is preparing for substantial budget cuts that may force the cancellation of ongoing and upcoming missions across the solar system, leaving it facing a “brutal” future, experts have warned"

Tho not a shut down. the way they are doing it is to set targets and NASA themselves have to make the cuts.

Not surprising Trump is being grovelled to.

Allira Tue 25-Mar-25 20:58:08

To use DH's description of him, it is just inconceivable that such a blithering idiot has such power.

DrWatson Wed 26-Mar-25 02:34:50

For Rula and that "Trump has risen to the highest position in the country. Somehow. He can't be a total idiot. Even though he does appear to be one most of the time.", well, he's not the first US President to be an ignoramus.

Chump is a racist, sexist, proven fraud and liar, a thin-skinned braggart who switched sides when he saw that the Republicans had a void at the top of the party, and could be a useful vehicle for his personal ambition to be Emperor.

He wrote many years ago that it's poor people's fault they're poor, they're stupid, and his voters are, as they happily believe the endless lies that he tells them. He learned in the first campaign that he can spout any nonsense, but so long as he poses like a winner, and looks confident, that's what the adoring masses want.

As it happens it looks like his campaign boast that it would be easy to reduce grocery prices will haunt him for ages, and he's not bright enough to know that his famous posturing re Trade Tariffs actually costs American consumers MORE.

His support for Putin? Well, it looks quite likely that his previous visits to Moscow, when he wanted to expand the hotels empire, has resulted in some interesting film now in the Kremlin vaults. Why else can Putin now refer to him as "that useful idiot"? 'Agent Orange' will doubtless carry on blundering about, so far he's got Canadians fighting an all-out trade war, boycotting US goods and vacations, he's got most of the world boycotting Tesla cars, and apparently much of it will be buying planes and munitions from other sources too. Dems have got 3+ years to find a better candidate and run a better campaign.

He had nothing to do with it. These decisions were made before the November Election.

Whatever Trump crony that is running NASA is full of it.
