Letters from America

If anyone is in any doubt about what is going on in the USA at the moment listen or read Heather Cox Richardson’s Letter from America. I receive this via email as a written document. I’m sorry but I couldn’t find a link and can’t copy/paste the whole of the email. The Letter was originally sent to my by a distant relative from Georgia, USA, a political democrat.

The Letter details how the Trump administration is destroying the governance of the USA and putting in place another government structure. Below is an extract from the Letter I received today.

Last month, journalist Gil Duran of The Nerd Reich noted that Curtis Yarvin, a thinker popular with the technological elite currently aligned with the religious extremists at Project 2025, laid out a plan in 2022 to gut the U.S. government and replace it with a dictatorship. This would be a “reboot” of the country, Yarvin wrote, and it would require a “full power start,” a reference to restarting a stalled starship by jumping to full power, which risks destroying the ship.

This all just fills me with dread as I watch this unfold. Another oligarchical state. The sooner we are closer to Europe the better and beware of Reform. Farage and co are great supporters of Trump.

This is not a conspiracy theory

I can't make your link work myself but this www.youtube.com/results?search_query=heather+scott+richardson takes you to her YouTube feed.

Sorry about that. She really is worth reading/listening to. This site substack allows you to sign up by email which you may not wish to do. I have the free version

This is very recent UTube. I haven’t listened to it but I may very well do later.

As an aside (and not meant to derail) does anyone remember the radio series called Letter from America by Alistair Cooke which ran for years on Radio 4?

Always interesting and informative and much missed.

ayse Fri 28-Mar-25 12:39:52

Yes, I do. I used to listen to them on a Sunday morning, I think. Initially I didn’t like them but came to enjoy them on Sundays

"This all just fills me with dread as I watch this unfold. Another oligarchical state. The sooner we are closer to Europe the better and beware of Reform. Farage and co are great supporters of Trump." Me too Ayse

I have several cousins in the USA and the difference between their views and the people they voted for are very different.

One family has father and now two sons with army/medical backgrounds. We don't mention politics except acknowledging in couched terms what we think of their Commander-in-Chief, because the family fear their messages/phones may be targeted. Another quite bluntly tells me what she/the family think of the government, Trump, Vance, Musk et al.

Another cousin proudly tells me that they like Trump and voted for him. I simply don't respond to that section of emails, but my regard for them has shifted, which is sad. I'm surprised, as they have a son with diverse needs who did attend a special unit. I don't know what has happened to the provision under the new education legislation. They may be regretting casting their votes for Trump by now.

Meanwhile we watch from afar wondering what today will bring.

Allira Oh yes, I too miss Alistair Cooke! There has not been his like since he died. Reporting now by comparison seems all sensational and full of largely meaningless soundbites. I listen to Bernie Sanders a lot as he makes perfect sense to me.

Allira Fri 28-Mar-25 12:55:00

There are a lot of unhappy people and some disillusioned ones in the USA who may have voted for Trump but don't agree with how far he is going, so that gives me hope.

When I think of Trump, Vance, Musk and the people, "currently aligned with the religious extremists at Project 2025" I have to wonder how and why there are so many greedy, selfish, unkind people and how they have all found each other and risen to power.

Most people you meet seem balanced, decent, content with their family, friends and pleasant ordinary lives - and then there is this bunch.

AGAA4 Fri 28-Mar-25 14:10:25

Most people are/would be happy with enough but enough is never enough for people like Trump, Vance, Musk and others in the retinue.
The USA is under a dictatorship now and ordinary people don't matter.

ayse Fri 28-Mar-25 14:15:57

I find it so difficult to believe what I’m seeing and hearing. Some historians have suggested the Europe could sink into dictatorship. I never thought I’d see the USA in this position.

ginnycomelately Fri 28-Mar-25 14:57:35

It’s just unbelievable, , you just cannot believe that these. dreadful people are in charge of the richest country in the world, please please let the American people wake up to what’s happening

Mackir Fri 23-Jan-26 04:46:20

Americans are awake. They are just uneducated.

Mackir Fri 23-Jan-26 04:54:25

30% of children are malnurished. 95 % of Americans have no wealth. 50 % have no medical care and will die due to lack of cash for medical treatments. This is a country where fetal /maternal mortality is amongst the highest in the world. Yes, richest nation, for only 1 % of the population. It will get much worse.

Mackir Fri 23-Jan-26 04:57:51

And racism is still rampant

I miss the old Alaustair Cooke programmes of the same name.
Thank you for your recommendation ayse .

Oops!
Early morning eye blur - I meant Alistair .

mae13 Fri 23-Jan-26 07:40:30

As Trump is such a red-blooded patriot it must have pained him beyond belief when his rich Daddy used his money to get him excused from the Vietnam War draft..........

GrannyGravy13 Fri 23-Jan-26 08:15:07

POTUS said in his speech that NATO Troops had never come to the aid of America, and those who did go to Afghanistan were nowhere near the frontlines.

As a parent of a serving Officer who has been to Iraq, Afghanistan and the Gulf States with NATO and the Americans I am totally disgusted by his dismissal of the 457 U.K. Forces Personnel who lost their lives and over 2,000 who lost limbs and been severely injured in Afghanistan.

How on earth can he stand at the WEF in front of influential and intelligent and blatantly lie 🤬🤬🤬

An American friend I made whilst on holiday was in contact with me for 18 years. When 'things changed' I saw where her allegiance really lay and as she got older she became even more entrenched in 'that' way of thinking. After listening to her ramble on about her 'beliefs' for two whole hours one afternoon, I felt as if I had spent two hours on an alien planet. I just let things slide after that as I could not endure any more Face Time with her. Shame really that isms and schisms can programme people to that extent.

Fallingstar Fri 23-Jan-26 08:38:11

I remember Alistair Cooke and the letter from Alistair.
We have family in NYC - where support for Trump has always been negligible - and in parts of California. They are fuming, feel totally powerless to do anything about the situation, and can only watch as this despicable man and his cronies dismantle their country in front of their eyes.

Fallingstar Fri 23-Jan-26 08:38:50

Sorry - of course meant letter from America.
Was my phone not me 🫣

Wyllow3 Fri 23-Jan-26 08:42:32

thank you for this powerful thread. I have bookmarked the Heather Cox report given above by ayse

heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/

... its accessible, readable, and can be gone to in the future to check events out.

Glad to see the couple who were thrown out and had a roadside brith are taking it all the way in the courts - that will gain a heck of a lot of publicity.

and you are so right GG13 of the total blanket ignoring of troops, doctors, and more, from the UK (and other nations, but mainly us) by Trump.

So true.
And that is without mentioning the sacrifices made by allies in the Iraq war.
So insulting and offensive to those who served and were killed or injured and their loved ones.
