So at last we know the U.K. is not special and we are being subjected to crippling tariffs. Therefore what should Sir Keir do? I’m thinking of some kind of retaliation.,

I think the entire world has slept walked into expecting our commodities to be as cheap as chips and hey ho China has stepped in to provide our needs, be it technology gadgets, clothes etc.

It’s not China exploiting the world, it’s the world not keeping its eyes open and letting China and it’s population do the jobs others do not want to do.

POTUS Trump appears to want to grow the USA’s ability to manufacture more of what its citizens want .

Is this wrong? I don’t think so.

Is he going about it in rhetoric correct way? Only time will tell.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 04-Apr-25 08:50:24

Correct not rhetoric 🤬🤬🤬

As a direct result of Trump's actions Bamford is expanding the plans for his new factory in America. He's an opportunistic billionaire - exactly the kind of person you would expect to benefit from Trump's activities.

When Donald introduced his tariffs Bamford didn't think, well, I'm British, I'm nearly 80 and rich as Croesus. My car collection alone is worth over £260 million. I was handed this business by my father so I've been very lucky. On top of that I've got the whole Daylesford thing and other businesses going on.

Did he think Britain has been good to me, I'm a knight of the realm and here's my chance to give something back? I could use my billions and knowledge of the industry to really go all out and invest in Britain. Provide jobs, set up training schemes, put my vast wealth into this country.

Nope. He expands his business in America in order to make maximum profit and uses aggressive measures to avoid paying tax in the UK (for which he is under investigation).

You can see why Brexit and Trump might suit this Conservative donor. Create division and chaos, disrupt the lives of the little people, reap billions in profit. Rees-Mogg's father wrote a book telling people exactly how to do this.

A system?
edition.cnn.com/2025/04/03/politics/trump-tariffs-chaos-competence/index.html

Yes, a system. Which he has applied to all Countries.

To do with gap between imports and exports of that Country, divide by two, and something else.
Written about in most Uk newspapers.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 04-Apr-25 08:58:09

JCB (Lord Bamford) employees approximately 8,000 people in U.K. over 11 plants

They have 11 plants outside of U.K. employing 11,000 people.

If he wants to expand and generate more jobs, isn’t that a good thing?

Casdon Fri 04-Apr-25 08:59:25

It’s a back of the fag packet system fancythat. That’s not good enough, it’s illogical, with little if any scientific basis, and it’s crashed the stock market.

No it didn’t 😥

GrannyGravy13 It would be an even better thing if he wasn't trying to avoid paying tax in this country.

Churchview Fri 04-Apr-25 09:03:28

Also, he could generate more jobs in this country rather than Texas.

It’s probably another tax dodging scheme by the Bamfords.

Exactly, see my link in the post below.

China cornered most markets due to their flagrant disregard for workers rights. They pay buttons. The West cannot compete at that level, nigh impossible.

Whisper very quietly.

The UKs largest export to the USA is all types of services.

Trump hasn’t touched these.

Having stricter regulations about the ethics of countries you deal with might have a more beneficial impact on both overseas workers rights than tariffs.

If people can't import shoddy, cheap rubbish (made on the backs of the misery of others) then industries at home would benefit from a more equal footing. It would me it more a race to the top than a phoney trade war based on tariffs.

“It’s not China exploiting the world, it’s the world not keeping its eyes open and letting China and its population do the jobs others do not want to do.”

That is total nonsense China exploits where ever it goes in every way it can, it will pay whatever odious regime in whatever way they choose, be it arms, cash, Swiss bank account. It dumps cheap products on the market destroying local industries, we should wake up and see what’s happened to other countries that have been taken over by China, including Australia and NZ.

It’s China that supports the warlords fighting in Africa, they simply don’t care as long as they get the resources they want. Developing countries are building up loans they cannot possibly repay, even South Africa has debts it can’t service.

In China the whole population is controlled there is no free speech, speak out of turn and you are sent to a re-education camp, you go where you’re told and follow instructions. We enjoy their cheap goods produced in the most polluted environments on the planet.

Not back of the fag packet.

Not crashed the stock market[unless you call 4% drop or whatever, a crash].

Not illogical[though it is a bit odd maybe].

Shoulnt think scietific unless you call Maths scientific

May cause problems in some Countries.

Well, he has done it with a system.

And with none of his usual whims or tantrums.

And to be fair to him, other Countries already had tariffs in place against the US. He is playing catch up.

If it's a "system" it's a foolish one as it has set a tariff for an island where the only population is penguins and another where the only population is an American base. He has also given a different tariff to two islands that are actually part of France and therefore part of EU.

David49 if we didn’t want everything cheap, and were willing to pay to have our goods manufactured in the U.K. and other countries brought manufacturing back into their own countries and control, China would get a wake up call.

The world is reliant on China due to global apathy and a throw away society It produces more carbon emissions than the rest of the world combined allegedly.

China’s presence in other countries, well U.K., France, Portugal, Spain etc., have all plundered and pillaged Africa and elsewhere over the years. I am not excusing China’s actions in Africa and elsewhere but pointing out that it is not unique to them.

Perhaps because of the United States is the largest exporter of services with these increasing from $81.2 billion to $1,107.8 billion in 2024.

Finesse is never his strong point!

And I query sometimes his, I assume sort of, civil servants over there[are they the ones Musk is/was trying to sort?]
