The Telegraph is reporting that the US have issued a statement saying it is concerned about 'freedom of expression' in the UK and that there will be no free trade without free speech
The US have stated they are watching a specific case in particular. The case is of a woman who was prosecuted for holding up a sign in the buffer zone outside of a Bournemouth abortion clinic. US officials have met with the woman

Now Trump is targeting the U.K. with tarriffs how should Sir Keir handle a response?
(627 Posts)So at last we know the U.K. is not special and we are being subjected to crippling tariffs. Therefore what should Sir Keir do? I’m thinking of some kind of retaliation.,

If I lived in America Wyllow I’d be proud that he was doing his best for us. He won’t be pushed around and yes, I admire him for it. He’s a strong leader. He stands tall and has a backbone. Unusual these days eh? A politician doing what he said he would?
I think many will see Trump as an enemy of our country and our allies. What would you think of people you believe support the enemies of the country we live in, offering them aid/comfort FGT

I think attracted is a strange word to use.
I’ve explainedthat I like the fact that he sticks to his word. He’s strong and is passionate about doing the best he can for his fellow Americans. Millions of Americans have voted for him to be POTUS - against all odds.
Kamala who?
I know I’m an outlier on here but it doesn’t make me wrong.
"I know I’m an outlier on here but it doesn’t make me wrong."
Correct.
You're not wrong because you're an outlier.
You're wrong because you're not very good at thinking, to put it mildly.
You like him because he does what he says?
He said he would solve Ukraine's war DAY 1. What happened? He imposed tariffs on Ukraine, and suspiciously none for Russia.
Before he was elected he was spouting that inflation is out of control and that if he wins he will make things cheaper. Then once he got the votes, he admitted that there would be growing pains.
Those are just the most recent examples. The list is nearly endless if you trudge through his entire history.
You also show a clear lack of critical thinking skills.
Trump said egg prices are down thanks to his team, and you believe his word because he thanked someone from his team on TV? Trump is right because Trump said so? That's circular logic.
Please do the world a favor and abstain from voting from here on out.
TDSyndrome from your spelling of favor, which we in the UK spell 'favour' I'll assume you're likely American. To suggest FGT should abstain from voting in the UK seems a bit of a reach, she's entitled to her opinions whether I or anyone else agree with her, and her vote is inviolate!

A week later, he made a show of confused displaying cartons of eggs, bacon, milk and other grocery products outside his New Jersey golf course as he railed against the Biden administration's policies.
"When I win, I will immediately bring prices down," Trump said at the time.
He said yesterday on live tv that egg prices had come down 59% and thanked his (? agricultural aide) for “all his hard work” in this. 🤔Could you try to explain your absolute need to believe this man FGT.
Some deep psychological deficit.
😂
Me & the millions of people who voted for him?
"Me & the millions of people who voted for him?"
You keep bringing up that millions voted for him. You clearly can't defend the indefensible (no-one can), so you try to hide behind large numbers to defend your position.
"Look! I can't be wrong, 10s of millions agree with me. We can't ALL be wrong!!" You smugly state.
It just further shows your poor reasoning skills. I can delve into how and why you're thinking is bad and wrong and should be avoided but I think I can make a more poignant point with a simple single question.
Was Hitler justified because he had 10s of millions supporting him?
So let's try to base our arguments on actual merit instead of fallacies.

Democracy ensures everyone has a vote, but to ensure democracy actually functions; everyone voting needs to be well-informed and well-reasoned.
FGT showed on several occasions that she is unable to be well-informed or well-reasoned; so for the sake of democracy's continued existence, I recommend that she stops voting.

I sense that you're a bit of a dictator who only wants 'democracy' for those who think and vote like you. We all think that those who think and vote like us are correct, but most intelligent people accept that others may come to different conclusions and that doesn't mean they should be silenced. There lies the paths of Hitler, Putin and others of that ilk.

^I think the way you are representing our country is horrible and rather sad, really^
It’s how I’m feeling this morning Wyllow.
Disappointed in how we are run.
No matter that the ‘white privilege’ questionnaire is from the silly time of BLM - why on earth are Whitehall even engaging with it now? Daft exercise.
"silly time of BLM"
How silly for those blacks to claim their lives matter, am I right?

What was that quote mentioned earlier? Never argue with stupid? I think I will heed that advice now.
When liberals were frantically trying to warn everyone that trump would overturn abortions (Roe v Wade), they would say what FGT loves to say "calm down calm down, you're exaggerating. Let's just see what happens in a year".
Well it's happening again, but now with the world economy in danger. And these imbecilic trump supporters are still saying the same tripe; all because they lack the foresight and critical thinking skills to see what everyone else is (easily) seeing.
Either your head is in the sand FGT or you're willfully arguing in bad-faith, but trump and his cronies have repeatedly made remarks about a 3rd term. To tell me to calm down and see what happens is so dangerously stupid.
I absolutely loathe the fact your vote is just as valuable as mine.

Perhaps this civil decorum/respect is how we find ourselves in this position in the first place.
Maybe we should let idiots know just how far their stupidity stretches.
Anyways, I have zero respect for people who see minorities as beneath them (which is obvious given that she thinks stopping black people from being murdered on the street is "silly" and her self-proclaimed adoration for trump).
Maybe instead of sending minorities to camps for something they can't control, we should be sending people to camps for their beliefs (something they can control!).
Like just concentrate all of the nazis in a camp and watch the world become a better place overnight.

I think it would have been reasonable for someone new to the thread to assume from ""Me & the millions of people who voted for him?" that the poster of that less than clear phrase was also a voter for Trump, therefore an American. I don't think there was anything to suggest "FGT should abstain from voting in the UK".
As for calling another poster "a bit of a dictator", this seems excessive. All the poster was requesting from, we both seem to think, America - the country and people most affected - was a bit of critical thinking by FGT. That seems to be reasonable and oft requested on GN.
You're entitled to your view PoliticsNerd and you obviously agree with TDSyndrome's view that I'm stupid. It may surprise you both that I'm immune to your opinions.
I think anybody who thinks those of a different persuasion should refrain from voting is displaying dictator attributes, obviously you think it's perfectly OK to think some with 'unacceptable" opinions should be silenced and disenfranchised!! In my opinion that's 'dictatorship'

I think it's important that she keeps her RIGHT to vote (even if her opinions are rooted in misinformation and bigotry), but I think it's just as important (if not more) that she realizes she SHOULDN'T be exercising that right (because of the aforementioned reasons).
I obviously can't force you to stop voting, but who knows what the future will bring. I may have to do what my grandfather did and take the votes away from nazis forcefully. Hope it never comes to that, but it's completely out of my control at this point.

What special arrangement is that?
Political trade restrictions
But that has nothing to do with tariffs!
Russia for example is still trading tariff free with the USA to the tune of over $3billion dollars a year.
Now compare that to Lesotho who traded $250million with the USA and have been hit with a massive tariff of 50%.
I think it is worth mentioning that after Trump won the last time there were some very unusual posters appeared on MN. They disappeared relatively quickly. They were from both 'sides' of the debate.
fancythat
He has done it in a methodical way.
I question whether it was wise to do it to 186 Countries all at the same time.
Potentially destabilising for the world finance Markets. doing it all at once?
Ah.
According to this, it was done deliberately.
I did think it was rather odd.
Hadnt thought it all could have been intentional.
