The last post was from imaround telling us what books have been banned from a Naval Library:

"Over 300 books banned at the US Naval Academy.

Does he really have carte blanche to do whatever he likes?

He does now that the Finance Bill has been passed. There appear to no longer be any legal restraints that could touch him (see my post from yesterday morning).

If that is correct, and I admit my knowledge is limited in this area, then the so called checks and balances appear to have fallen at the first hurdle.

Our Head of State had their powers limited by a much wiser parliament.

I’m beginning to appreciate our system.

Congress has voted to eliminate itself. It was a huge Bill which I very much doubt that most Republican Congresspersons actually bothered to read. They loved the tax cuts for the wealthy and the cuts to social welfare and didn’t bother to look further.

TBH, I don’t think that the GOP has shown a great deal of interest in defending the Constitution.

Apparently there's no proof that Baron Trump ( don't you just love that name!) was refused a place at Harvard or Columbia but it would explain a great deal if he was. Trump does love revenge it seems to be one of his main motivators along with avarice and the love of power.

This on SM

“You will not be able to afford an iPhone. You will own 2 dolls. You will work in a factory. And you will be happy about it. That is actually the MAGA platform right now.”

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 24-May-25 08:14:32

Of course, the not- very - hidden - agenda behind his war with Harvard is that Trump Jr was rejected: and Ms Obama accepted.
PS . I understand that she did very well there...

Canadian King to open parliament.

One in the eye for Trump😄

How does he get away with issuing one Executive Order after another in rapid succession?

Anyone who crosses HRH Trump immediately gets whacked with an Executive Order (a Royal Decree in his world!) but doesn't he have to put anything before Congress? Does he really have carte blanche to do whatever he likes?

Wyllow3 Fri 23-May-25 22:28:43

I'm more shocked by Trump showing, unannounced and not agreed, the president of SA the video with the false claims there were mass white burials. Zelesnsky type humiliation tactics.

You'd have thought they would have verified the video and claims before showing it at the very least.

I cannot believe how rude the White House representative is to journalists. This is the measure of how Trump and his people think of others isn't it? www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce81334je72o

I think it is a BUMF group chocolatelovinggran - best universally male friends. I doubt he has any female friends at all. Or maybe no real friends at all, so it’s just a BUM group.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 23-May-25 21:59:35

But Trump's new BFF group, the Middle East despots, do like, sometimes, to send their sons to establishments such as Harvard.
If they send them to Oxbridge instead, can we have a plane?

Hey, just out.

Federal judge halts Trump administration ban on Harvard’s ability to enroll international students

"US District Court Judge Allison Burroughs ruled hours after the nation’s oldest and wealthiest college filed suit Friday. Harvard argued revocation of its certification in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program was “clear retaliation” for its refusal of the government’s ideologically rooted policy demands.

Burroughs is the same judge considering a separate lawsuit from Harvard challenging the administration’s freeze of $2.65 billion in federal funding

"“It is the latest act by the government in clear retaliation for Harvard exercising its First Amendment rights to reject the government’s demands to control Harvard’s governance, curriculum, and the ‘ideology’ of its faculty and students,” the complaint states*

Its quite a story really as an elite institution takes on Trumps crushing moves against freedoms in Universities.

It's quite a battle. Trumps team claim

"The White House on Thursday accused Harvard leadership of turning “their once-great institution into a hot-bed of anti-American, anti-Semitic, pro-terrorist agitators” and said, “enrolling foreign students is a privilege, not a right"

I listened to a History Extra podcast yesterday about a despotic Assyrian 7 th century ( bc?) king called Ashurbanipal and when I heard about the way he humiliated his enemies my first thought was that it was the identical to the way Trump treats people. The difference is, though that, awful as he was Ashurbanipal was a great believer in learning and set up one of the first ever libraries.

Wyllow3 Fri 23-May-25 14:48:26

That is worrying, Maisie. What chaos there is going to be interpreting it.

Meanwhile, Harvard University is going to sue Trump over the International Students move.
I imagine the lawyer fees will be minimal....

Seriously tho, the amount being spent on judicial challenges of so many different kinds - only in the USA!

The bill which has just been passed by Congress has a clause which is worrying people.
I quote this from US commentator, Robert Reich's blog

.... if the Big Ugly Bill is enacted with the following provision, now hidden in the bill:

“No court of the United States may use appropriated funds to enforce a contempt citation for failure to comply with an injunction or temporary restraining order if no security was given when the injunction or order was issued….”

Translated: No federal court may enforce a contempt citation.

Obviously, courts need appropriated funds to do anything because Congress appropriates money to enable the courts to function. To require a security or bond to be given in civil proceedings seeking to stop alleged abuses by the federal government would effectively immunize such conduct from judicial review because those seeking such court orders generally don’t have the resources to post a bond.

Hence, with a stroke, the provision removes the judiciary’s capacity to hold officials in contempt.

As U.C. Berkeley School of Law Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law Erwin Chemerinsky notes, this provision would eliminate any restraint on Trump.

‘Without the contempt power, judicial orders are meaningless and can be ignored. There is no way to understand this except as a way to keep the Trump administration from being restrained when it violates the Constitution or otherwise breaks the law. …

‘This would be a stunning restriction on the power of the federal courts. The Supreme Court has long recognized that the contempt power is integral to the authority of the federal courts. Without the ability to enforce judicial orders, they are rendered mere advisory opinions which parties are free to disregard.”

With this single provision, in other words, Trump will have crowned himself king. No congress and no court could stop him. Even if a future Congress were to try to stop him, it could not do so without the power of the courts to enforce their hearings, investigations, subpoenas, and laws.

It was a very long Bill (now enacted) so it's not altogether surprising that there's been very little comment on this clause, though Richard Murphy picked it up yesterday

(Sorry, I can't link to Reich's blog, but do look him up if you're dubious about him)

Federal judge stops Trump from dissolving Education Department

A federal judge today blocked President Donald Trump’s plan to shut down the U.S. Department of Education. Trump’s executive order aimed to strip away critical services for students across the country while bypassing Congress.

The decision not only restores employment for over 1,300 federal workers but also halts Trump’s order from taking further effect, in a major check on Trump’s executive power.

I've been following the attempts to crush Harvard. The latest move it to try and ban all international students. I presume it's a strong source of income. The excuse - yes some students took part in Palestine Demonstrations. But of course many who took part were UK citizens.

And the cost: Trump is making the USA poorer from some of the best and brightest students from abroad, and weakening the US "soft power"abroad, weakening standards.

I wonder how far he'll go, however, because surely his new bestie buddies from very rich Saudi and other countries want to send their offspring to universities abroad.

All because he simply cant bear to lose.

This is the BBC report of the orange one’s meeting with the South African president today - it beggars belief if it is accurate. Well done President Ramaphosa for keeping your cool against the rantings.

I see they took the plane from Qatar. So illegal and unethical. Not surprised. Wonder how much fixing it up is going to cost us? Probably more than we were paying Boeing for the new Air Force One on order.
