The last post was from imaround telling us what books have been banned from a Naval Library:

"Over 300 books banned at the US Naval Academy.

They include many on a history of race in the USA. Extraordinary, wiping out the struggles for equality over years.

An incredibly dangerous precedent.

Thanks for the new thread! I am so glad we can continue this conversation.

When I first read this I thought it was a parody but it seems to be true: images of the aircraft Enola Gay and records of people with the surname Gay have been flagged for removal under the DEI purge!

They tried to take Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad down this week and put it back up after an outcry.

They are literally trying to erase the history of women and minorities in this country.

He has ordered the Smithsonian to remove DEI.

"Trump singled out the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2016 near the White House, the Women’s History Museum, which is in development, and the American Art Museum for criticism.

“Museums in our Nation’s capital should be places where individuals go to learn — not to be subjected to ideological indoctrination or divisive narratives that distort our shared history,” he said."

Isn't this literally what Hitler did?

imaround Fri 11-Apr-25 02:51:57

He literally considers black history and women's history indoctrination.

How anyone still supports this man is beyond me.

On Federal Websites, women, minorities and LGBTQ people have been erased.

"Across the federal government, agencies have been busy scrubbing photographic and written references about women, people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community from their websites.

In at least one instance, NPR's reporting shows that the Department of Veterans Affairs is aware that removing categories of people from the agency's website can affect the delivery of the services it provides."

That list itself is a useful reading list for anyone wanting to know more about the struggles of minorities in the Land Of The Free.

Keep sharing the list - I would guess most people didn't even know of the existence of these histories and personal memoirs until they were banned, so publicising the banning will be a counter-action and bring them to the notice of more, not fewer readers.

I'm old enough and my family was political enough to remember with some detail the civil rights movement in the USA in the 1960's, and the Jim Crowe laws that preceded them (Jim Crowe laws were basically a version of apartheid combined with an active Klu Klux clan - hangings of blacks, bombs in black churches, the lot).

and women - in the states and the Uk campaigns for equal rights and the efforts made to retrieve the histories of women from their absence in books, in historical accounts.

Banning or rewriting history was key feature of the rise of Hitler - remember the book burnings and the rise in Eugenics.

I have also come across the doctrine of Pronatalism on the rise in the States. The influencers who want the world to have more babies - and say the White House is on their side.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5ypdy05jl9o

there's a great concern amongst them that genetic engineering should favour a high IQ - there is a family example.

Vance of course is on board

"The US Vice President JD Vance has also spoken openly about his views on procreation. At an anti-abortion rally in January he declared: "I want more babies in the United States of America."

There are early indications that the Trump administration is prioritising family too. On 18 February, Trump signed an executive order to improve access for IVF that recognised "the importance of family formation and that our nation's public policy must make it easier for loving and longing mothers and fathers to have children".

Cossy Fri 11-Apr-25 11:55:25

Frankly I find this whole “regime” terrifying and simply cannot understand why ANYONE would continue to support and encourage him!

imaround please don’t ever stop posting, I feel it’s of great importance to keep the rest of the world updated with all these executive orders.

Thanks Wyllow.

It’ll be interesting to see if that improved access to IVF will be available to all … or just ‘the right sort’ of ‘loving and longing mothers and fathers’. I guess we’ll never know!

I share your reservations. Its certainly limited as to income, or even some laws where you have to pass suitability tests?
But there are some clashes with the abortion lobby.

From today’s Pnut:

“Republicans control the House, Senate, Supreme Court, and White House, but somehow, they’re struggling to get a budget passed. Or at least they were. Yesterday, House Republicans finally agreed to work with a Trump-backed budget framework with a razor-thin 216-214 margin after passing the Senate 51-48 last week.

Two House Republicans – Reps. Thomas Massie (Kentucky) and Victoria Spartz (Indiana) – were the only GOP members who voted against the party line. A larger group of fiscal conservatives held out initially, but Speaker Mike Johnson pulled them all aside and somehow whipped them into shape by Thursday’s vote.

“It’s a good day in the House. I told you not to doubt us. We’re really grateful to have had the big victory on the floor just now. It was a big one, a very important one,” he told reporters after the vote. “Our first big, beautiful reconciliation package here involves a number of commitments, and one of those is that we are committed to finding at least $1.5 trillion in savings for the American people while also preserving our essential programs,” he promised. Despite Republican promises to keep debt down, the new budget will raise the debt ceiling by $5 trillion.”

He has ordered the Smithsonian to remove DEI

Good.
I wish it’d be banned everywhere. Insidious nonsense on mission creep in my opinion.

Meritocracy all the way please. For everything.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 11-Apr-25 12:37:59

An estimated 69 million American women do not have a birth certificate that matches their current legal name for one reason or another. Republicans say they’ve instructed states to develop a process for accepting supplemental documents to alleviate this concern, but as we all know, bureaucracy moves slowly.

Blimey!
That’s the population of the whole of the UK!

Mamie Fri 11-Apr-25 12:56:01

Well like many people in the UK my birth certificate doesn't match my current legal name, because I changed it to my husband's name when I got married. 😮 I have however regained my birth surname name as my legal name in France because you retain it after marriage.

Re: Greenland. After Vance's rather humiliating visit to the US Pituffik Space Base as opposed to the Greenland people, they have sacked the female commander of the base. She clearly didnt grovel sufficiently ad was accused of

"“Actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense"

Susannah Meyers had apparently written in an email perhaps somewhat naively (it is a space base, not military one)

"I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base".

No.

In my opinion, any attempt to remove DEI is an attempt to erase all who are not white male heterosexuals (the privileged few).

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 11-Apr-25 13:46:23

Well not in my opinion, as Government data about the UK's different ethnic groups. 82% of people in England and Wales are white, and 18% belong to a black, Asian, mixed or other ethnic group (2021 Census data).

So 82% of us are white, here. No wonder employment data supports this figure.

I wish DEI would stop trying to manipulate the obvious (innocent) bias.

I don't think you understand what this means. Or maybe you do and do support it.

They are erasing the history of women, minorities and lgbtq people. Trump has said that learning about these groups is indoctrination.

You support that? You support erasing the history of successful women, minorities and LGBTQ people?

It seems female and non-heterosexual are of no consequence?

You only spoke to white, black, Asian, mixed or other ethnic group. In my opinion DEI is much more that that.
