Do you think it is some sort of reparations for past wrongs and colonialism that makes the UK so welcoming to the boat people in a way that other nations don’t ? Some sort of collective guilt? In which case they should look carefully at who is coming and whether they do come from former colonies or are just freeloaders. It would rule out most Europeans for a start.
I think it more complicated, inasmuch as some of those colonies became part of the Commonwealth with different immigration laws but thats going back quite a bit now. And we invited the Windrush generation over to do essential jobs.
Sudan was a French colony but refugees are scattered over Europe. It's a terrible tragedy but in terms of arrivals most Sudanese are felling to adjacent countries. But it is one clear example where helping people where they are means less try to leave, but I fear that only military peacekeeping would have any effect.
