US/UK trade deal?

Overnight Vance has made vague noises about a trade deal with no specifics

"'The president really loves the United Kingdom'
“We’re certainly working very hard with Keir Starmer’s government.
"The president really loves the United Kingdom. He loved the Queen. He admires and loves the King. It is a very important relationship. And he’s a businessman and has a number of important business relationships in [Britain].

He also mentioned Europe "“I love European people"

US Vice-President JD Vance says there is a "good chance" a trade deal could be reached with the UK

The UK's trade minister agrees, but says she can't provide a "timeline" for when an agreement might be reached

UK imports to the US are charged a 10% tariff, with higher rates for cars, steel, and aluminium, but Vance says "we're working very hard with Keir Starmer's government" on a deal
But when it came to US-EU relations, Vance was less complimentary"

But meanwhile the USA is looking at putting tariffs on in the pharmaceutical trade.

I dont trust Vance at all. My first thought it, "at what costs to us". And also, not to accept trade deals that are deliberately intended to split us off from other allies - Canada, Europe. Atm all "hot air" in the on of/ on off edicts from the White House.

Its on the BBC I player news feed.

So if food standards are not reduced.

What concessions are we likely to make?

I doubt the trade deal is imminent. I couldn't care less about chlorinated chicken: I've eaten it often enough in the US without an ill effects.

Good for you… but just remember that the rate of food poisoning in the US is far, far higher than that of the UK (we ‘did’ all the statistics last time there was the threat of a US/UK trade deal)

I’m afraid that one person’s personal experience doesn’t negate the data.

I have seen nothing to suggest that we wouldn’t have to take their chlorine-washed chicken or hormone-fed beef if we had a trade deal with the rogue state that is the USA.

I think it was Vance who said that the chicken is safe to eat. Hmm. Why does it need to be bleached to make it safe? We can produce good grass-fed beef without hormones, so why would we want American hormone-contaminated meat?

The article on BBC I player news on her trip reported reassuringly said she has said definitely no reduction on food standards.

I am with the majority of you and I do not trust any of them. I wonder if the agreement signed with President Zelensky to allow America to source minerals will allow Russia to sidle up to USA in that part of Ukraine.
Why cant we just have a peaceful world. Life is far to short.

‘Made in China’ doesn’t inspire confidence.

My son’s brother-in-law recently visited China as part of his job as an engineer and visited one of the BYD factories which manufactures electric cars. He said it was state of the art and will soon be a real threat to other electric cars, he holds a very high position in his company, which is actually American,
and knows what he is talking about. Vance’s ill informed comment about Chinese peasants is not only ignorant and ill informed it is so far off the mark it is laughable.

BYD is a giant and rivals Tesla and Toyota in production, its cars are attractive, cheap and reliable, not too many in the UK yet but common in other countries. The Chinese brand that gets noticed most is MG, that sells in large numbers.

We all have choice though. We don’t have to sell our country down the river, we can make conscious choices and buy British or European made. Japanese cars are mainly made in the UK, which keeps jobs here. Are MG or BYD?

We have just bought a Japanese car from a dealer who also stocks some Chinese cars. The sales man was not impressed with the chinese cars as many of them had roof leaks. A bad fault for UK

Nothing at the expense of a closer relationship with the EU, our most important trading partner.

llizzie2 Thu 17-Apr-25 16:14:43

I agree with you. The President seems to be displaying paranoia, in that he thinks he is right and everyone else is wrong. He is the saviour of America, Got saved his life so he could save America.

Of course, not being a psychiatrist I cannot say.

What really makes me laugh is the way he holds up everything he signs to show the world what a clever little chappie he is, and could mum put it on the fridge door, please?

Donald Trump and his right hand general that’s Vance are the personification of the Hitler regime. Especially for those of a certain age I saw it then I see it now I hope that England sees this for what it is and steps aside I think that everyone needs to unite and not be coerced by this false profit at least that’s what I think! This is a man who ran on giving independence to education and look what he’s doing that’s Trump and Vance -to the University or trying to do my fear is that he will succeed and this is just going to far pretty much like book burning! Unless you look a certain way talk a certain way and adhere to certain philosophy you’re not welcome in the United States it does not seem they might as well remove the Statue of Liberty and put one up with Trump!!

Something like this was bound to be in the small print. they may try and target goods. No thank you.

I missed Stelantis they make EV vans in Ellesmere, several other brands make hybrids in the UK. Teslas that come to the UK are built in China.

The only UK manufacturers that build and sell EVs in the UK are Nissan and Mini, with a few from Lotus, ( Jaguar is now out of production), all have a high Chinese component reliance, as do the other European brands, VW are having to close factories because they cant compete at the lower cost end of the market.

Stellantis do. Toyota make hybrids in the UK too and are planning a UK battery plant. You can also buy electric cars made in Europe, BMW, Audi, Renault for example. Chinese cars shipped fully assembled to the UK so there is no definitely no benefit to the UK economy are not the only option. I’m only speaking for myself, but I want my purchases to support the UK and Europe.

Radio 4 this morning a Trump trade advisor, said that a U.K./USA trade deal will very likely have prohibits contained within it to stop the U.K. trading with China!

B…..y cheek.

We may or we may not trade with China, but it is certainly not for the USA to dictate whether we do or not.

That’s highly unlikely because ALL countries including the US have Chinese trade agreements or components in goods. Can you imagine Australia being forbidden to trade with China the economy would collapse, we are getting a long way from reciprocal tariffs only China would benefit from that.

Jane43, Vance is the master of the deeply offensive bon mot. Perhaps you remember him saying that Britain was set to becoming an Islamic state?
Days later, he's Mr Flattery..

If the UK tries to isolate itself from the US it will be much worse off that’s certain, a few years ago we distanced ourselves from the EU, are they now our best friends? , no, they are not we still do not want their rules and aims.

Starmer is doing exactly the correct action, calmly keeping good relationships with as many other nations as possible

Well said.
