There is someone on the dias in navy blue too

Prince William not wearing black.
It's the modern acceptable.

NotSpaghetti not wishing to bash ‘ anyone, but doesn’t President Trump own a black suit. Apparently the dress code was quite strict according to the TV presenters who said even down to the jewellery the ladies could wear?

So true Bea - and not baking hot either!

What a beautiful day for the funeral service - absolutely stunning photos from sky and bbc tv… and of course the number of dignitaries from across the world…
Am pleased to see the wearing of the mantilla by some of the ladies; so respectful and as a family, we always had to wear a head covering to mass, even when the church relaxed the rules,
Mother said show respect!

Please don’t feel sad. He is in Heaven, Be glad he knew he had a place with the Heavenly Father. Blesses to all.

How lovely annamarie.

I suppose that’s the comfort that a religious faith gives you and, conversely, what I miss from my lack of faith. To me death is the end…

Mantilla is correct, they were expected when I was a child but things definitely changed later on.

Just looking at the news photographs today it really hit me just how in a sea of hundreds of men there were no women in the church or procession.

Pope Francis was a reformer who appointed women to some of the highest offices in the Vatican.

Yes, the Roman Catholic church still has some way to go before they appoint women priests. If they ever do.

keepingquiet I've seen shorts being turned away in Italy.

I think white veils for women used to be the province of princesses only?

I admit I don't even like off-the-shoulder bridal gowns in a church - I don't wear a hat though.

As a girl, women (and some girls) wore a "head covering" of some sort in church. In those days yes, women wore a black dress and veil to meet the Pope.

It was about modesty.

I think it was early 1900s that it came into Canon law but was revised out in the 1980s.

I think your arms (shoulders at least) and your knees have to still be covered.
(Again - modesty)

I think lots of catholics will wear a mantilla or veil out of choice.

It's mainly a cultural thing- when younger I wore a black mantilla, which is a Spanish term, not for any holy reason but I thought it was cool.
The tradition all but died out following Vatican II, but women can still choose to wear one, or a hat. Men wearing hats or hoodies in church is frowned on though. It's all about respect in the end.
Recently in my church there was a young lady wearing a white mantilla paired with very short shorts. It seemed inappropriate to me but there you go...
The rubric now is cover arms and legs above the knee, but no one 'enforces' it except in some countries I've been to.
Being in church is much better than staying away, whatever you're wearing...

Very offensive comment

Why?

This was in reference to the comment that Pope Francis was
doped up and propped up on Easter Sunday.
In my humble opinion, the comment was offensive and pretty sure he was on major pain relief for his many health issues but doped up and propped up was inappropriate to me..

Charles attended the funeral of the Pope in 2005, representing his mother, the Queen.

His own wedding to Camilla was put back a day so that he could attend.

Bea65 Wed 23-Apr-25 03:52:22

Learned that Pope Francis preferred a more humble way of living rather than the palatial style apartments within the Vatican

The Vatican funeral is on Saturday and many dignitaries from across the globe will be attending and I will be watching..Prince William is representing his Majesties in view of King Charles own health issues?

The Pope was a very special man, he will be missed.

I think Cherie Blair is Catholic. Grace Kelly was.

Indeed - which why I wondered whether it was a Catholic 'tradition'.

Thanks!

I meant the hat thing in church was "revised out" of Canon Law.

Not very clear, sorry.

Camilla did cover her head the first time she met the Pope, I think the second visit wasn’t official

ixion Tue 22-Apr-25 20:39:07

A small query from a non-Catholic -
I always thought that a lady had to cover her head in the presence of the Pope?
I seem to recall Cherie Blair (and Grace Kelly?) wore mantillas.

Queen Camilla didn't.

Is this maybe old-fashioned now?
