Several papers have told the tragic story of Kathleen Moore .
She struggled to manage financially after she separated from her partner and could not afford her mortgage .
Kathleen worked as a dog walker ,
but was limited due to ill health.
She relied on food banks and was refused benefits .
And committed suicide .
RIP Kathleen šŸ’

We no longer say ā€˜committed suicide’ as it’s no longer a criminal offence.

Oh I’m so sorry to offend

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 23-Apr-25 13:47:46

You haven’t. I was just pointing it out. 😊

Franski Wed 23-Apr-25 15:25:24

I think the phrase is 'died by suicide' ...as FGT said it's not a criminal offence so a crime hasn't been committed. I only understood terminology recently.

Thoroughly upset about Kathleen - I wasn't really thinking when I wrote committed .
It used to be a standard phrase.
So it's my fault-J52 not your's .
Apologies to anyone who was offended .
But now the red pens are out .
Sometimes I feel that some gransnetters are just waiting for you to trip up .

Indeed. No apologies needed from you. It is not appropriate to continue with this issue on this sad thread.

There are sources of reliable free debt advice eg
Step Change
Turn2Us
Christians Against Poverty

Martin Lewis has also produced a booklet about mental health and debt, which is available as a free download.

The problem is that once you get into serious debt, there's a serious downwards spiral in mental health, which makes it more difficult to think and behave rationally.

I have a bad feeling that support for mental health is under a lot of pressure and that for some people, more intervention is needed. Wes Streeting hopefully will be aware of this problem and I hope for some change.

Debt requires a different kind of support from other mental health problems. No amount of CBT or anti-depressants is going to solve debt problems. People need somebody to help them think through things rationally and to make some phone calls, if necessary. There are solutions for people in debt, even if it means making serious lifestyle changes and opening up to people about problems.

I don't really know why the DM has picked up this particular case. There must be thousands of people in similar situations. The fact is that unemployment benefit is woefully inadequate. This lady had osteoporosis, which I wouldn't have thought made her eligible for PIP and I'm not sure why she was turned down for Universal Credit - maybe the income from dog-walking and renting out rooms was too high.

It’s terrible, especially when migrants are getting housing for free. Absolutely disgraceful.

Kathleen's situation and mental health had nothing to do with migrants. As has been explained, she could have kept her house, if she'd been given the right advice.

growstuff, you have made some really sensible posts on this thread. The overwhelm of debt and financial problems is horrific for people to cope with and there is still associated shame. Like you say, it affects lots of people.

RIP Kathleen

Thank you JaneJudge. I'm glad they seem sensible because I speak from experience. When I was experiencing the same thing, I wish I'd have known what I know now. If I could turn the clock back, I'd love to take Kathleen by the hand and lead her through the options and show that even losing your house isn't the end of the world (and life). there are organisations out there which can help and I think I mentioned Martin Lewis' booklet earlier.

Sorry BlueBelle but have you even read the OP? It explains about Kathleen and as I was unaware of this lady, I simply Googled her name and read about her.
Pointless just asking who she is.

My sister died by suicide due to the bedroom tax, my parents tried to help but to no avail, she was too proud to accept help.
Maybe that’s why I get cross when some people get it all handed on a plate.

Mt61 Sun 04-May-25 23:18:54

It can be difficult to seek the help Growstuff, when you are at rock bottom.

Suicide is always a tragedy whatever leads to it.
Many attempt but don't succeed as I discovered when collecting a loved one from hospital after a failed attempt.

BlueBelle Mon 05-May-25 07:22:50

Well reprimanded Georgesgran I wrongly presumed it was someone famous 🤣
Every day people who are overwhelmingly distraught through mental health, break ups, loss, poverty, drugs, pain, seeing no light, use suicide to escape this could have been avoided there is help out there there is advice, the family only knew the surface, she probably didn’t want to bother them with her troubles, but they now have a life sentence of ā€˜what ifs’
Suicide is a living hell for those left behind

loopyloo Mon 05-May-25 07:31:27

Please if anyone feels low please seek help. Ring the Samaritans, or talk to someone about the debts.
We've all been low at times.
Help is out there.

Youre right FGT. Apparently "took their life, died by suicide, or lost their battle with mental illness"are more appropriate terms nowadays. I always feel sad when someone feels the only way out is this way, what pain they must have been in.
