A local councillor can do nothing about migrants risking their lives because there is no legal route to claim asylum without crossing the Channel.

A local councillor can do nothing about energy bills.

A local councillor can do nothing about the pension credit rules.

A local councillor can do nothing about student tuition fees.

A local councillor can do nothing about the review of benefits.

A local councillor might be able to do something about business rates but the loss of revenue would mean a reduction in budgets which are already cut to the bone.

Where pray should those cuts be made ? Care for vulnerable adults? Education for children including SEND provision. Police and fire services? Road maintenance? Waste collection and recycling? Street cleaning?

Again, I ask. What are the policies of the Reform candidate you have just voted for?

It amazes me that so many people have views about issues but are really naive about local elections. We are not having any this year here in Sunny Bradford as it is not our turn. Local means local!!! Nothing to do with WFA, Benefits, Boat People, But is to do with emptying your bins, your roads, your verges, your swimming baths . Get a grip ladies and get your facts correct. Plus Nanna8 much as you loathe the UK from idyllic Australia, not everything there is as rosy as you paint it is it?
Reform can get in for me in any place where they can make things happen . I wait with baited breath.

That does not explain why we have the most expensive electricity in Europe. Labours own figures show that subsidies add £700 per year to energy bills . A lot of these subsidies are for wind farms that are not yet connected to the grid and will not be for years to come. A shortage of cable laying ships and wire cable for power lines is the problem. Politicians have jumped on to net zero without looking to see if it is feasible in the timescale they have announced.

And my point about pegging the price of electricity o the most expensive production method still stands.

The problem of connection to the grid has been around for a long time and is reported on periodically. Perhaps our 'do nothing' tory government could have made a start, but all they did was ban onshore wind (which doesn't really require cable laying ships...)

Alternative energy provision should be a growth sector, not a nusiance...

I wasn’t ever planning on voting Reform, but looking at your list, no wonder we are dubious about what exactly local councillors do?

We’ve voted but it’s been a difficult choice.

Do I vote for LibDem, who evidently still see the 16.4.25 ruling, as the canvasser put obfuscating the main issue.

Together with LibDem, Labour and Green, all sent canvassers round who couldn’t answer the questions I put to them OR in Labour’s case, gave me her opinion, but said, “I don’t think most of my party agree.”

Should I vote for Greens who have sent endless leaflets round, full of self praise about what they’ve done including the roads, when our road is still a mass of potholes, but don’t answer emails sent to the, do get in touch address on the leaflets and letters?
Do I vote Conservative who haven’t sent anybody round, so missed an opportunity to answer any issues I raised?

To my mind, where we are anyway, thankfully, all local councillors seem to have done as good a job as they can as regards your last sentence.

So my vote, latterly, has been abut sending a message to Westminster.
Previously, I have mainly voted independent, in local elections. I dont want any groups of Councillors to get too big for it's boots. Or take anything for granted.

Well, for the first time I am paying out more in Green energy tariffs than I am in energy, so, yes they are the result of high energy bills.

Well said silverbrook, local councils deal with local issues not national ones. It’s sad in a way that national politics have to come into local politics at all. Does it matter whether your local councillor is Conservative, Labour , Reform or Lib Dem when you need potholes filled? Also, MaizieD made a good point some pages back that in many cases, local councils are hamstrung by local government, particularly in planning matters. The general public is astonishingly ignorant about the way local government works and is all to quick to sling brick bats at them and believe the worst.

I have just watched a group of folk (red badge’s) knocking on the doors across the road from my mum’s, not one door opened apart from one who gave them short shrift 🥴 They walked passed mums & didn’t speak to us. Might be the fact I’ve painted mums bench in bluebell- probably thought, oh reform voters.

Unfortunately LizzieDrip you seem unable to cope with any criticism of either Starmer or Labour, which leads you into those sort of remarks aimed at nanna8.

My predictions:

Labour will do badly because even though they are local elections people think this will stop immigration etc...

Reform will do well because people think this will stop immigration etc...

Nigel Farage will be the next Pope because the Cardinals think this will stop immigration...

I really don’t think that most voters, of whatever persuasion are blind to what Councils are there for, or what’s under their control.
It will be really interesting tho to see the results.
