I say, I'd like Conservatives to be the opposition, because underlying Reform policies, ideologically, lie a great deal of similarities to Trump policies. and watching what's happening over there is alarming - never mind their attempts to manipulate the UK.
Policy wise Reform point to the USA not our nearest trading partners the EU. Reform isnt democratically constituted so at top levels Farage's enduring commitment to everything USA is significant.
But foreign policy except for migration isnt generally discussed on the doorstep.

Uk Elections today
(303 Posts)I cant see another thread about the subject.
Online newspaper headlines think Labour will suffer[normal for a Party in power] and Reform will do well.
We shall see of course.
Personally, I think Labour are underestimating the strength of feeling in the general public about immigration by boat. And about grooming gangs[white/non white, all of it].
As I was writing this, I think there is growing resentment about Net Zero too. People's energy bills are too high.
All of this has been discussed on this forum before of course.
But I think Labour may be about to see it all played out today.
Reform spokesman said this morning he supports a NHS where some pay something!
The results were more or less as I'd expected, tho as a Labour supporter was obviously sorry about that 6 people win in Runcorn. 16 candidates!
Labour are far more well placed than the Conservatives as things stand to weather the storm, I noted GG13's post well above about wanting a Conservative Party "home" with alternative policies to Reform - I'd like that too as an opposition party. In that way, Conservative have "lost" more than Labour as I'm hard put to see a raft of alternative policies to Labour.
Opposing this or that Labour has done is not the same at all as saying what they would do instead
I can well understand the attraction of Reform for disenfranchised voters. However it's easy for Reform to make promises when it isn't in the position of having to deliver
For example they talk big on migration - but they don't actually have any viable realistic answers re stopping the boats and their social and economic policies just "sketched out".
Andrea Jenkyns (new mayor Lincolnshire) has unsurprisingly (as she has talked about it for ages suggested tents should be good enough for housing asylum seekers in the UK. A vote catcher maybe, not sure the practicalities will make it much cheaper.

Breaking news!!! Farage is arrogant!! All true David49. But you're spectacularly missing the point that their are areas of the UK (mainly the north of England) that have taken more than their fair share of migrants, their already poor and impoverished communities have become even poorer and impoverished; with no investment in the infrastructure that supports those migrants. They're angry that no one is listening to their concerns; just like the voters concerned about migration (and other things) voted for Brexit. So you'd think that you very intelligent, wise and well educated people who know about these things would have learnt a thing or two after Brexit, but they didn't. They continued to place the burden of immigration onto the poorest areas, stropped investing in their communities and stopped listening to the very people affected by it and then they sneer that they haven't a clue when they vote for someone who promises to listen to them. It's not those voters who haven't a clue *David49. *
You’ve just confirmed my conclusion the Reform is a single issue party that appeals to the same voters that cause Brexit.
I haven’t watched the news today. But my partner tells me that someone in Reform has stated that we ‘ need to become more like America’. And yet the very people that vote for them are probably the ones that depend the most on the NHS and the welfare state. Turkeys voting first them are Christmas yet again. I still feel sickened by the sight of all the Reform campaigners wandering around our local market last Sunday ( I don’t think I want to go back there again to be honest). Every local Facebook page that I’m on seems to turn any subject matter round to immigrants ( yes, even one yesterday about Orcas being seen in the North Sea near to the coast). I despair at what’s happening to this country but I’m sure that, as with Brexit, Reform supporters will just tell me to ‘go somewhere else then’.

As expected a beating for Labour, gains for Reform, most of whose voters don’t have a clue about policies except for stopping migration.
Scary.Your arrogance knows no bounds, does it.
Yes I thought the same.
And as some of us keep asking, 'what are their policies?', well, we are about to find out.
As was discussed in another forum recently, 'the proof of the pudding is in the eating thereof'. Let's see how they do.
'Farage is passionate about...' if so, why does he so rarely attend to his civic duties?
It’d be interesting to know where David49 lives to see exactly why unfettered immigration isn’t of concern to this poster.

And you've just confirmed my conclusion that you, and the main political parties, just will not listen to them. Your dismissal of the same voters that cause Brexit is precisely what's led to yesterday's polls results; you've dismissed them out of hand; you lump them together as perhaps being racist or stupid or just clueless without even considering how the issues that made them vote as they did are a major concern for them. Far easier to just right them off isn't it? But tread carefully; we've all seen the results of what disenfranchised, ignored and resentful people can do when they get to a ballot box.

You mean those who are in despair because of the reason I posted above?
🙉🙈
Does anyone remember that poster from years ago depicting a long queue of people and the slogan "Labour Isn't Working"? I saw it every day on the side of a building on my walk to school.
Perhaps there should be another one: "Labour Isn't Listening". 🙈🙉
Yes, I did vote for them (sorry) but really, they are clueless in some ways.
Now we can see what Reform actually achieve.
I wonder if they will all do as much for their local areas as Farage is doing in his constituency?

Leave the farmland alone How right you are.
There’s not much that boils my piss but this is one issue that does 😡
Ed Milliband should take a drive through Germany. Solar panels are literally everywhere.
Don't worry!
Food arrives nicely packaged on supermarket shelves and it's all thanks to the Food Fairies.

It's a shame Farage didn't use his passion for fishing when he was M.E. P. and he did nothing .
I heard him on radio4 this a.m. and feel no wiser about how he intends to put the words into practice.

While we are swapping insults the most arrogant party leader in the UK is Farage, only surpassed on the international stage by Trump, so I’m in good company.
Why anyone so many vote for a single issue ultra right wing party, worries me. I did challenge Freya to illuminate us of Reform policies other than immigration, no reply yet, maybe you could do that.
He’s passionate about our farming & fishing rights, all that labour are damaging. He’s completely right about Net 0- Ed Millyband is completely nuts to think that it can be achieved in such a short space of time.. ( poor bloke, he’s trying his best- bless 🙄)
A lot of people queuing up to vote last night, I haven’t seen that in a long time- many voting reform from the conversations I could hear.
Actually Carlotta, I think David49’s comment reflects the attitude of the current government and will undoubtedly appear in some form or other as an excuse for why Labour lost out.
The other comment will be the Conservatives lost a lot more.
IMO that was to be expected, but the fact that the votes have gone to Reform in order to kick Labour out is a more important indication that the government should take note of.

What's really scary is that it's the arrogant superiority of statements like that that makes people place a protest vote in the first place. In the communities that are poor, have a higher than average level of immigrants, have seen very little investment in their infrastructure and feel ignored and looked down on; they feel completely unheard by the main parties who promise them much, but deliver little. If, as a previous poster suggests, this was a protest vote; you'd have that thought lessons would have been learned after Brexit and very clever people like Labour, Conservatives and David49 would have started to listen to what people are actually saying. And if it's migration or building on their few remaining green spaces that's bothering them; you'd better start listening to them before you end up with another catastrophe like Brexit. But I expect David49 knows this because he's ever so clever.
Perhaps taking money away from disabled people was not quite the vote winner that Starmer thought it was.
Despite many on here welcoming those from the boats, there’s a great many more people out there who aren’t.
Until the unfettered immigration is addressed then Reform will continue to gain in areas where people are inundated with young men living in 4* hotels on the taxpayers dime while pensioners are hammered.
Only in this country are these undocumented men allowed in at the cost to the indigenous population, living in 4* hotels while the rest of us have to WORK!
It seems to me, and I could be wrong, that the boat immigration situation has made a significant number of voters lean more to the right.
If it was anyone's intention that more voters from overseas coming here would make the Uk[well England in this case] vote more left wing in total, well I think it may have backfired.
