If local councillors just deal with local matters, why are a lot of them, or most, affiliated to national parties?
Why are they not all Independents?

Uk Elections today
(303 Posts)I cant see another thread about the subject.
Online newspaper headlines think Labour will suffer[normal for a Party in power] and Reform will do well.
We shall see of course.
Personally, I think Labour are underestimating the strength of feeling in the general public about immigration by boat. And about grooming gangs[white/non white, all of it].
As I was writing this, I think there is growing resentment about Net Zero too. People's energy bills are too high.
All of this has been discussed on this forum before of course.
But I think Labour may be about to see it all played out today.
Sadly experience counts for very little nowadays, especially when you look at what a mess so many so called ‘Experienced’ councillors & MP’s make. I say give Reform a chance. Quite frankly we have little to lose.
Thanks for the pile on guys!
Have a nice evening in the sunshine☀️

”However that poster often says things which aren't accurate - why would they be if she doesn't live in the country nor visits it?”
Grandmabatty, I agree with you. I think that particular poster may get her ‘information’ largely from social media echo chambers.
I would like her to provide her sources or, at the very least, declare that it is ‘her opinion’ rather than conveying it as ‘fact’.
That’s my opinion anywayTwice in "her" post she stated 'i think that....', what's that if not opinion.
Perhaps we're not allowed opinions on Gransnet?
Only those who consider themselves well-informed and politically astute should be allowed to post and, of course, their opinions will be facts.
I really don’t think that most voters, of whatever persuasion are blind to what Councils are there for, or what’s under their control.
It will be really interesting tho to see the results.
My predictions:
Labour will do badly because even though they are local elections people think this will stop immigration etc...
Reform will do well because people think this will stop immigration etc...
Nigel Farage will be the next Pope because the Cardinals think this will stop immigration...
You’re welcome!

^Sounds like you’re in the schoolyard LizzieDrip and a mean spirited comment from you aimed at a regular poster on GN^
Rather an unpleasant, personal attack there Oreo but hey, you do you
The irony LD 😉
Unfortunately LizzieDrip you seem unable to cope with any criticism of either Starmer or Labour, which leads you into those sort of remarks aimed at nanna8.
You need to realise that even many other Labour supporters don’t view them or him through your rosy goggles, let alone those who support other political parties.

I have just watched a group of folk (red badge’s) knocking on the doors across the road from my mum’s, not one door opened apart from one who gave them short shrift 🥴 They walked passed mums & didn’t speak to us. Might be the fact I’ve painted mums bench in bluebell- probably thought, oh reform voters.

Allira thank you
I did say “ I wait with baited breath “
Meaning I don’t expect very much
Probably me - I'm squinting in the sunshine!
Sorry, there’s no way to edit, but I meant to say “local councils are hamstrung by central government” ……
Well said silverbrook, local councils deal with local issues not national ones. It’s sad in a way that national politics have to come into local politics at all. Does it matter whether your local councillor is Conservative, Labour , Reform or Lib Dem when you need potholes filled? Also, MaizieD made a good point some pages back that in many cases, local councils are hamstrung by local government, particularly in planning matters. The general public is astonishingly ignorant about the way local government works and is all to quick to sling brick bats at them and believe the worst.
Well, for the first time I am paying out more in Green energy tariffs than I am in energy, so, yes they are the result of high energy bills.
Allira thank you

Allira I will never vote for Reform ever, ever, ever. I want them to get in to fail 🤞🤞
Well you confused me there Susieq62!
I apologise if I misunderstood.
Reform can get in for me in any place where they can make things happen
It amazes me that so many people have views about issues but are really naive about local elections. We are not having any this year here in Sunny Bradford as it is not our turn. Local means local!!! Nothing to do with WFA, Benefits, Boat People, But is to do with emptying your bins, your roads, your verges, your swimming baths
To my mind, where we are anyway, thankfully, all local councillors seem to have done as good a job as they can as regards your last sentence.
So my vote, latterly, has been abut sending a message to Westminster.
Previously, I have mainly voted independent, in local elections. I dont want any groups of Councillors to get too big for it's boots. Or take anything for granted.
Mt61, may I ask you what has Farage ever done that could be described as 'patriotic'?

Silverbrooks,
I wasn’t ever planning on voting Reform, but looking at your list, no wonder we are dubious about what exactly local councillors do?
We’ve voted but it’s been a difficult choice.
Do I vote for LibDem, who evidently still see the 16.4.25 ruling, as the canvasser put obfuscating the main issue.
Together with LibDem, Labour and Green, all sent canvassers round who couldn’t answer the questions I put to them OR in Labour’s case, gave me her opinion, but said, “I don’t think most of my party agree.”
Should I vote for Greens who have sent endless leaflets round, full of self praise about what they’ve done including the roads, when our road is still a mass of potholes, but don’t answer emails sent to the, do get in touch address on the leaflets and letters?
Do I vote Conservative who haven’t sent anybody round, so missed an opportunity to answer any issues I raised?
What a choice

Plus Nanna8 much as you loathe the UK from idyllic Australia, not everything there is as rosy as you paint it is it?

It amazes me that people actually think that Reform could form a viable government.
Did you think before you supported them?
Perhaps Get a grip and get your facts correct is a good motto.

That does not explain why we have the most expensive electricity in Europe. Labours own figures show that subsidies add £700 per year to energy bills . A lot of these subsidies are for wind farms that are not yet connected to the grid and will not be for years to come. A shortage of cable laying ships and wire cable for power lines is the problem. Politicians have jumped on to net zero without looking to see if it is feasible in the timescale they have announced.
Do you have a link to those 'Labour figures' ?
And my point about pegging the price of electricity o the most expensive production method still stands.
The problem of connection to the grid has been around for a long time and is reported on periodically. Perhaps our 'do nothing' tory government could have made a start, but all they did was ban onshore wind (which doesn't really require cable laying ships...)
Alternative energy provision should be a growth sector, not a nusiance...
