Apologies for misremembering optician/hairdresser. Surely their view of ‘current thinking’ will be influenced by the majority views in their professional, family and friendship group. It’s consistent with current thinking as expressed by illegal settlers.

Hamas is a product of the way that Palestinians has been treated for the last 75 years, if the treatment continues, Hamas will continue.

There can be no conciliation with hamas, end of.

I think everyone varies as to how much they follow politics, how much they believe there is a point in discussing it, taking action, which itself varies from emails or marches or joining organisations to help directly like aid relief or working in a hospital, to becoming a politician who has some actual power in a situation.

Everybody is different: some believe that action can make things better so engage with an issue, others believe "no point".

However history is shaped by those who have engaged, for better or for worse.

What's "current thinking?" If it's "giving in to Hamas" then surely that's part of the problem that needs to be addressed. Negotiation, conciliation and agreement is central to moving forward. Does it really matter if both sides accept the grievances of the other? Both sides have grievances but any thoughtful person understands that peace is not built on grievances, it's built on hope for a better future for both parties. Your optician may be great at helping you have a clearer vision in the future but I fear his vision of the future is clouded by his own prejudice.

Iam64 not my hairdresser but my optician. A very thoughtful and professional person. So how many more years do you think it will take for a lasting resolution. The cost in human life is really building up. Not defeatist but my optician thinks that Israel will never give in to Hamas. He’s Jewish and I think he’s in touch with current thinking.

I posted earlier. I have many Jewish friends and former colleagues. Of course, the want the hostages home, they also want the Israeli bombing to stop.

ronib , your hairdresser may be Jewish and he isn’t the only one fearing 100 years of war. That’s defeatist. There must be a solution, agreed by ‘both sides’, challenging yes but the alternatives are worse

As regards my "news" quotes above, it's positive at least there are new talks: no doubt pressures on the hostage front:

But the aid proposals are very tentative, as Netanyahu is not involved.

The US based aid organiser Jake Woods is demanding that the UN joins his scheme, basically or "nothing can happen".

It sounds to me like the US have been pressured to "do something on aid" as per noises made by Trump but its "on our terms or not happening" before the huge centres planned, weeks away.

New round of talks opened

Hamas says its negotiators have opened a new round of talks aimed at ending the war in Gaza, hours after Israel launched a major offensive.

Taher al-Nounou, an adviser to the head of Hamas, told the BBC a new round of negotiations had officially begun in Doha on Saturday. There were no preconditions from either side, and all issues were on the table for discussion.

Israel Katz, the Israeli defence minister, said Hamas negotiators were returning to indirect talks in Qatar to seek a deal on the hostages.

Israel has agreed to allow some food into Gaza before a newly-approved mechanism for aid deliveries is up and running later this month, the head of the newly established Gaza Humanitarian Foundation told CNN.

Jake Wood, the foundation’s executive director, said he did not yet know when or how many aid trucks Israel would allow into Gaza, but he called conditions there “clearly urgent” and said he expects “positive updates on that in the coming days.”

The Israeli government, which has blocked aid to Gaza for nearly 11 weeks, has not responded to multiple requests for comment about the matter.

It’s to commemorate 77 years ago in 1948 when 750,000 thousand palistinians were driven from their homes into neighbouring countries where they have had to remain, because Israel will not allow them right of return.

The matches in London have been going on most Saturdays since 7 Oct 2923 but never reported on tv or radio news, and it’s heartening to see so many are there.

I doubt very much that children are without extended families,
I can believe that a missile strike on a building can wipe out whole generations of one family but leave a surviving child. Missile strikes are brutal.
