In the long report I posted above from CNN on page 4, the last sentence is very significant
“Its possible there were Hamas there because one woman screamed "At the school compound, one woman screamed at Hamas, an expression of anger at Gaza’s ruling militants once virtually unthinkable.
“Hamas should get out of the school, they are hiding between the people,” she cried. “Get them out, what’s the fault of the children who are torn apart?”
Her voice is as valid as any voice “from the other side” As valid as voices from Israel “not in my name”.
Hamas is not all Gazan people. How do we make it possible for the many voices like hers to be heard.
How best to create a situation where we don’t continue to punish all?
Calling it collateral damage is to dehumanise populations whenever it is used on any side. Stories of real suffering come from both sides, we cant value lives of non combatants as lesser.
The war didn’t start on 7th October - the conflicts and hostilities have been going on for a long, long, time.
Truly, it is heart wrenching and intractable in many ways. But both sides have committed war crimes - why is it impossible to see this? Supporting Israel doesn’t need claims they have ever done nothing wrong?
