The majority of illegal migrants are from safe countries.
.
And they pass through 7 or 8 safe countries to get here!
Footage from last night shows police slashing one rubber dinghy with a knife. On land.
Hundreds and hundreds of young men living in tents inside huge hangar at Calais. Tents everywhere and it stinks. Patrick Christys reporting.
Asking them why they want to come to England. One guy says he is coming because we will give him money and a house., he thinks we are all rich people.

Iam, I gave up my membership when we got Blair - the choice was very right or quite right it seemed to me.
My parents (one pretty left and one a bit to the right) both gave up their positions over Thatcher (who they both loathed for different reasons) and made a pact to vote (I think) SDP.
I expect we all feel politically homeless at some point if we live long enough.

I challenge you all to read the book “ Small Boat”
Very, very thought provoking
Thank you I was able to download the book via iBooks.
GrannyGravy13, I hope the `conservatories sort themselves out so we have an effective opposition.
I was politically homeless after leaving the Labour Party a year into Corbyn’s leadership.
I rejoined to vote for the next leader and voted for Keir Starmer. I’ve no regrets about that.

Here are the full facts laid out in Sky News article

Laughable that the reporter said the French police don't go into the water for fear of causing panic and drowning - are we expected to believe this??? The French police have no desire whatsoever to stop these illegals from leaving their country and the more they let leave the more money they seem to get from the UK govt to stop them. When will the govt learn that pouring money into a country whose position is best served by doing nothing is a complete waste of taxpayers money?
I'll repost a bit of an earlier post that gave the facts as regards the limitations the police work under when trying to stop boats.
"Police can and do puncture boats that land on the beach but now the boats stay out at sea meaning the migrants have to wade to the boats.
Boats with passengers cannot be destroyed at sea under international maritime law.
Police are not allowed to enter the water to stop a boat that hasn't asked for help and, well, it's not illegal for migrants to run into the water.
Basically, these are international legal loopholes that smugglers have learned to exploit, and which hinder and frustrate the police.
knspol - please don't call people "illegals".
Iam64 I am politically homeless and can’t see that changing in the foreseeable future.
I find the language used against migrants and/or asylum seekers offensive regardless of colour.
It is not just brown people who cause problems. For anyone to imply that they are either ignorant, racist or both…
I agree Iam64, a well balanced and calm debate around most topics is welcome here, in my opinion!

There is nothing wrong with multiculturalism per se.
It does become a problem when the new cultures, regardless of colour smother the neighbourhood with their culture to the extent that there is nothing remaining of the original culture.
When our family home was on mainland Europe we lived amongst the locals along with a few migrants from various countries.
We avoided the ex-pat Brit hang-outs and areas why would we live abroad and import our homeland with us?
We are usually opposite ‘side’ of politics but imo have more in common than divides us.
Thank you for continuing to debate issues like this whilst posting well informed, calm info.
It’s far to easy to slip into polarised rows on immigration, with inflammatory comments posted as though they were substantiated by evidence
This is a Europe wide concern and needs a joint response. That’s what this government is attempting
Unless I totally misunderstood, I heard Starmer talk about the possibility if immigration of all kinds continues to grow as it has in recent years, our country could become a city of strangers. I dont find that too difficult to accept and I don’t see it as anything like Enoch Powell’s rivers of blood speech.
Agree
We will be compared to him!

I was tempted to say ‘white, brown and multiseeded’ and I haven’t heard the term brown before either.😄

Up to almost half of those living in London were born in other countries.Think about it.A city of strangers for sure, so glad we got out when we did.
Why?
It was already going that way when we left but worse now.We used to know all our neighbours in the street but the foreign newcomers ( white brown and many shades actually) wanted to keep themselves to themselves and didn’t mix with either us or each other.Local shops became full of either Polish goods or other nationality foodstuffs. In short, you could hardly tell you were still in the UK.
People from African countries don’t automatically get on with others Africa is a big continent. They don’t get on with West Indians and Pakistani neighbours didn’t like any black people from anywhere at all.The Polish neighbours were quiet but only mixed with other Polish people. It ended with us feeling isolated and not what we wanted.
Am sure posters will be along to say how wonderful they would have found it, so culturally diverse and so on.
We now live not that far from London and in a street of Victorian terraced houses with great neighbours mainly British but with a few families from different countries as well which is fine and they do say good morning and try to fit in here.
Shops are the usual mix with a good local Co-op.
Politicians who have allowed too much immigration into the UK don’t generally have to live with the consequences of it.
So Keir Starmer was on the ball with what he said recently.

So she didn't have to mix with brown people?
Really?
Are you unaware that many migrants are not as you put it brown people ?Oh come off it. We all know what's really going on here. I don't think people refer to Ukrainians or Poles as contributing to " a city of strangers"
Maybe not in your mind, but speaking as someone who goes into London frequently, I encounter more Eastern Europeans (including Ukrainians) working in hospitality.
Our business sends vehicles up to London daily, I can assure that on the building sites there are far more Eastern Europeans than (I will use your description once more) ^brown people^So what is the problem living in London?
I haven’t lived in London for many years, I prefer being closer to the countryside and the sea.
I imagine the main problem with living in London is the high housing costs etc.
lafergirl Keir Starmer referred to a country of strangers in his speech on Monday morning.
Quite frankly I find your definition offensive
