Hundreds and hundreds of young men living in tents inside huge hangar at Calais. Tents everywhere and it stinks. Patrick Christys reporting.

Asking them why they want to come to England. One guy says he is coming because we will give him money and a house., he thinks we are all rich people.

Macadia Tue 13-May-25 22:36:02

One guy? Out of hundreds and hundreds?

They are most likely in Calais to survive with hope and safety. Yes, without sanitation stations, humans will stink.

We do not get to choose the families we are born into.

Casdon Tue 13-May-25 22:43:52

What do you think is newly shocking Primrose53, it’s been like that for years at Calais?

Yup.

Monday

- Starmer addresses legal immigration. Complex issues, but dealing with the huge majority of immigrants. Still a lot of be worked out, but some good ideas in there about more UK citizens taking jobs.

Tuesday - Ta da!

Well goodness me, GB news does a shock horror nothing new on boat people.

Allira Tue 13-May-25 23:16:48

A report on ITV News as well this evening, showing French Police standing by and just watching as an overloaded boat comes into shore to load on more people, including children who are frightened and crying. The Coastguard vessel shines a light in them but just watches.

The French Police refuse to go in the water even ankle deep to stop the dinghy which looks unsafe.

Yvette Cooper, when interviewed, was non-committal but obviously extremely concerned.

“Do you have a life jacket for the children?” we asked one man holding a young girl. "No, no life jackets,” was the solemn reply."

Calendargirl Wed 14-May-25 06:45:21

This is what Keir Starmer should be addressing, not legal migration.

vegansrock Wed 14-May-25 06:55:09

But you do realise that legal migration is way higher than the boat incomers?? The visa system set up after Brexit has led to the current explosion in immigration and is open to all sorts of corruption and unchecked immigration. Very little vetting by the home office.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 14-May-25 07:02:39

Allira I watched that item in ITV 10pm news last night.

What really amazed (flipping made me furious) is that the French police will not put a toe in the water, the (mainly) men were running into the shallow water ( it even up to their ankles) in the secure knowledge that they were safe from the French police.

The father with his daughter on his shoulders willing to risk the crossing without a life jacket for her, why oh why when they are already in a safe country?

These desperate people are being fed lies and fleeced of their money by criminal people traffickers.

Smash the gangs meaningless sound bites…

If we had remained, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

So the moral of the story?

“Be careful what you wish for”

And are gullible enough to believe,

Casdon Wed 14-May-25 07:33:53

Perhaps people aren’t aware how much legal migration has risen? The AI overview is:

‘In the year ending June 2024, net migration to the UK was estimated at 728,000, a 20% decrease compared to the previous year. This decrease comes after a peak of 906,000 in the year ending June 2023. Despite the recent decline, the figure is still considerably above pre-Brexit levels of around 250,000.’

Of the 728,000 net migrants, there were 38,784 detected irregular arrivals.

To not be concerned about the additional 689,000 net legal migrants and the stress that puts on the UK infrastructure seems very perverse to me, particularly by those who on other threads complain about strain on the NHS, housing, schools, etc. I’m glad that the government is taking action, because that level of growth is unsustainable for a country the size of the UK. What’s proposed is not perfect, but I think the level of criticism directed at them for this is misplaced.

You are correct, these unfortunate souls would be jumping on or hanging underneath vehicles along the road to Calais.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 14-May-25 07:46:16

Casdon are the 350,000 plus Ukrainians included in those figures?

But nowhere remotely to the extent we see now. And we had the right to return them to the first safe country.

That was the point made pre-Brexit - that right would be lost, but hey! Farage knew best😡

Very little vetting on these people coming across on these boats also. Goodness knows how many terrorists we are letting roam freely.

They are safe , in France. No one bombing them there. How many terrorists hiding in plain sight. No one knows,or seems to care for that matter.

Great summary. I'm only shocked thst GB News is allowed to "use" serving MPs in the way it does.

keepingquiet Wed 14-May-25 08:02:09

Oh the irony that people voted to leave to keep the immigrants out. Yet, we have learned nothing- maybe your local Reform councillor can help?
Almost ten years since...

They believe what the gangs tell them. They fill their heads with promises of a house, a job and money when they get here. Seeing what they are leaving behind, most would jump at the chance.

Keir Starmer has completely changed his previously held views on migration. I feel there is a correlation between his statement and Reforms recent showings in the by-elections.

He needs to tackle those coming here under the radar instead of those who want to live here and work and contribute to our economy.

The bottom line is it is too late. Tony Blair's Open Door was a disaster for this country and it's continued to go downhill from there. The UK, sadly, is going to the dogs and this latest plan like all the others is unlikely to be implemented and so it goes on.

Cossy Wed 14-May-25 08:09:42

Honestly, it’s like Groundhog Day!

Number 1) many migrants DO stay in France and other countries.

Number 2) until (& if) International Law changes ALL asylum seekers are able to choose ANY county in which to claim asylum AND have to be in that country to make the claim.
Number 3) The UK IS a rich country compared to many!
Number 4) Many have (tentative) links to the UK and speak English.

It’s sooooo boring coming on here every day and seeing the same old, same old!

Honestly, people claim all the boats are full to overflowing with fit young men, then in the next breath claim they block our hospitals, GPs and schools? Hardly likely if they are all fit, young men!

Please get a different hobby!

AGAA4 Wed 14-May-25 08:10:56

Trust GB news. Are there people really shocked by this now. Saddened, worried maybe. Shocked no.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 14-May-25 08:11:05

Sarnia, the government has initiated several measures to control immigration- see other posts.
I wonder how you think it is possible to tackle " those coming here under the radar", as, by your definition, we don't know they are here......

What Starmer needs to do is get a great, and active, media and communications person, to post every day what actions this govt is taking in all areas, then perhaps people would shush for a day or two
