Well done Davy - Labour win.
Oh dear SNP - doesn't bode well for 2026
Reform came a very respectable third.

The conservatives, traditionally, don't figure much in central Scotland and what used to be labour heartland. I suspect Reform have targeted disenchanted SNP voters mainly

I reckon all voters are so seriously disenchanted with the SNP, they voted "any other party" as a hard kick in the arse to SNP Govt.

Casdon Sun 08-Jun-25 14:30:43

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but there are only 57 Westminster seats for Scotland, even less for Wales and Northern Ireland. The election result will be decided largely on what the 543 English constituencies out of the 650 total, vote for.

RSALLAN2002 Sun 08-Jun-25 14:32:34

That's the trouble with the system. It's who wins that matters. The rest are wasted votes.

Mojack26 Sun 08-Jun-25 14:58:19

Could'nt care less,sorry and I'm Scottish.

FranP Sun 08-Jun-25 15:20:49

If Reform had not split the vote, it is possible that Tory's would have got in.
No party came out well; in fact it shows that electorate have no idea what to do. Even SNP could not get past.

It should be noted though that the total turnout was less than half of the electorate

Yes I know, but it is worrying that people have chosen to vote in any numbers for a racist far right party.

WW11 is being completely forgotten.

I absolutely agree, Farage is the the acceptable face of racism

I’m always shocked at how apathetic we are in this country when it comes to elections. When you see how other countries queue up at polling stations or attend hustings it’s quite sad at our apathy.

My cousins are all Scottish. They hate Labour. They do not know how on earth they got voted in! But then again, non of my cousins are on benefits.

Grandmabatty Sun 08-Jun-25 17:31:59

Oh good grief. Are you saying all labour voters are on benefits? Or all labour voters in Hamilton etc are on benefits?
What absolute rubbish

Chaitriona Sun 08-Jun-25 17:38:45

I am not sure why some people want to get the Labour government out but if it is because of their moves to cut benefits to elderly and/or disabled people, I don't know why they think Reform will be better. If the US is anything to go by, it will be a lot worse. Huge cuts to health and welfare; jobs lost; increased profits, government contracts and tax deductions for the super rich. I don't imagine many gransnetters are super rich. Turkeys voting for Christmas comes to mind.

RSALLAN2002 Sun 08-Jun-25 17:39:05

That's the trouble with the system, especially when you have parties with almost equal support. Only the winner matters. The rest are wasted votes.

love0c Sun 08-Jun-25 17:40:40

Of course it is rubbish. Just like trying to make out all Reform voters and supporters are racist!

This was a by-election for the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh . Not Westminster.

Scottish Labour's new MSP sits in Holyrood.

MSPs don't have seats in Westminster Parliament.

I know butterandjam. Your post and mine were at the same time - I was replying to Stiff.

Is Reform picking up disenchanted Tory votes I wonder, or a mixture of SNP and Tory?

John Swinney, SNP First Minister, stupidly claimed that the by-election was a two-horse race between SNP and Reform.
Yet another terrible blunder by the SNP.

The voters rejected both in favour of Scottish Labour.

( Conservative donkey was a non-starter in that part of Scotland)

Scottish voters elected 36 Labour seats.

Ask your Scottish cousins why the SNP lost 50 Scottish seats.

Casdon Sun 08-Jun-25 18:48:52

Surely your cousins must realise by now that actually Labour voters are all middle class woke lefties love0c, I’m sure you’ve put them right?

There are small minded people of every nationality, unfortunately.

Good post Casdon!

Etoile2701 Mon 09-Jun-25 11:41:11

I wish they had come last.

Etoile2701 Mon 09-Jun-25 11:42:12

Shame that Reform didn't come last. Very disappointing.

Quite interesting to see the words "very respectable" used to describe anything to do with Reform!

🤣😂🤣😂

I wish they had come last.

So do I! However, clearly (gawd only knows why 😜) People like them!!

OldFrill Mon 09-Jun-25 13:35:02

I don't think Scots like Reform, they just see them as not having shafted them yet (unlike Cons, Lab, SNP or Greens), why they think Reform won't also be shafters I've no idea, misguided optimism maybe.

Aveline Mon 09-Jun-25 15:56:34

Gawd it's awful up here. I feel we're always voting against parties (well SNP) rather than for any in particular.
