Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

Just back from holiday. How was yours iamaround

Now I have the gargantuan task of catching up!

What is it about Trump and Musk again?

Who are in Trumps inner circle? Because one man cannot possibly responsible for what is happening.

Bannon is one I think

Maremia Wed 02-Jul-25 08:50:00

Stephen Miller is another.

sassenach512 Wed 02-Jul-25 09:34:47

Do you think Trump will get away with ditching the Constitution and running for a third term imaround? How would he get around Obama going for a third too though?
Thank you for keeping us in the loop by the way, it's so scary what's happening to your country 😔

imaround Wed 02-Jul-25 13:45:43

All lines end at Peter Thiel IMO.

I'll be back in a bit to respond to posts, but wanted to post this.

Warning, it is the court document that describes in detail the torture that Mr Garcia went through after being sent to EACOT.

Mr Garcia was never supposed to be removed from the United States in the first place, then was sent to a prison on El Salvador to be tortured. Trump's team refused to return him to the US for WEEKS, despite being ordered to do so by the courts multiple times.

Once he was returned the the US, he was arrested and charged with human trafficking. A trumped up charge that would allow them to deport him back to El Salvador.

How about Zohran Mamdani!!

How marvellous - gives us all hope

Maremia Thu 03-Jul-25 09:55:49

And the fight back against the Big Bonkers Bill.

imaround Thu 03-Jul-25 17:46:35

My holiday was lovely whitewave. Though the heat there in London about did me in. I almost ended up in A&E due to dehydration. I adored the National Gallery and even saw a last minute show!

Trump has done nothing but defy the Constitution and the law since January. And the Supreme Court just keeps giving him wins to do it.

Trump is starting to deport Naturalized Citizens and has already threatened Mamdani with deportation. He naturalized when he was 7 I believe.

No one is safe in the US right now. This spending bill give $165 billion to ICE and they are building detention "centers" to hold people. The corporations who are building them want people in them to make a profit, so when they are done with migrants and naturalized citizens, who do you think they will put there next?

imaround Thu 03-Jul-25 20:08:24

His bill passed.

$165 Billion for ICE and massive increases for defense while taking away healthcare for millions.

100% Republicans did this to us. I hope they all get what they deserve.

Wyllow3 Fri 04-Jul-25 13:53:32

Have you all seen this?

Its for real - the person I found it from quoted "This photo was posted on the official ‘X’ page of the US Department of Homeland Security

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 04-Jul-25 14:33:07

Wyllow, I understand that baseball caps are for sale featuring the motto "Alligator Alcatraz": probably manufactured in China.
Just when you thought depths had been reached...

Maremia Fri 04-Jul-25 14:57:02

So sad for all our our GNs over there.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Jul-25 16:28:03

I think as far as I understand Trump has been over ruled in the birther issue.

But this week Trump has reigned supreme in almost everything he has done.

Let’s hope this is his zenith and it is all the way downhill from now, but I don’t hold out much hope.

I was reading about the level of corruption in which he is involved. Is there nothing or no one with any teeth?

Maremia Fri 04-Jul-25 16:49:37

The Rebublicans are either too afraid or too greedy to defy Trump.
Musk is having a go, but that could fizzle out.
But, the Catholic Church has just criticised elements in the Bill.

imaround Fri 04-Jul-25 18:47:20

Republicans spoke against against that bill, them voted for it. They are more scared of Trump et al. Then they are the voters. Until that changes, nothing will change.

This behavior will get worse as the ICE budget has been increased 13x what it was.

They are building camps in 8 days in public land seized for the purpose. Those camps are being built and ran by for-profit corporations. They won't stop the cash cow that is the federal government paying them billions to keep humans as a commodity.

Supreme Court and Congress are both complicit.

imaround Fri 04-Jul-25 22:32:21

Mentioning the hats. I noticed the last few he made seems to be black, not red.

MAGA are sometimes called Red Hats (a play off of the British Red Coats from the Revolution). They seem to be abandoning the red, for now at least. Well, those who are shamefully aware of what they caused anyhow. The rest of them like having an authoritarian dictator.

imaround Sun 06-Jul-25 04:24:58

In a surprise to no one, they are just randomly grabbing Hispanic looking people off the streets now, without asking questions until they get them back to the detention center.

I wouldn’t fancy going on holiday to the USA at the moment.

Black hats - black shirts 😮

You arent the only one apparently.

Horrible flooding in Texas Hill Country, over near Austin and San Antonio. 80 people have died, including 28 children who were washed away from their summer camps. 10 campers are still missing. sad

They had flash flood warnings, but no one expected this. It rained 15 inches in an hour and the river rose from 1 foot deep to 23 feet deep in 30 minutes at 4:30 am. That whole area near the river is full of summer camps for kids.
The areas are expecting more rain and reports of additional flooding and evacuation of rescue volunteers in the area. They had no cell phones or wifi, just woke up with the cabins flooded. An RV park in the area has had entire families in their campers sleeping washed away. I cant imagine being the parents of those children waking up to news that the camps had been flooding and there were 23 campers missing. Especially since Texas is so huge land wise and families would drive 4 to 5 hours to take these kids to camp.

A horrible tragedy.

imaround Sun 06-Jul-25 22:33:37

This has a time lapse video of the waters rising. This area is 95 miles north of Camp Mystic, where 23 girls went missing. Almost 700 campers from that camp alone were rescued and evacuated. It happened so fast, even if there had been better warning in these areas, I am not sure the people would have gotten out in time.

Such an awful tragedy.

Allira Sun 06-Jul-25 22:39:33

This is terrible, imaround, it has been the main item on our news here this evening.

Thoughts are with all who lost their lives and all who have lost loved ones.

Maremia Mon 07-Jul-25 09:31:44

It has been dreadful to watch. Only one happy shot, of a girl managing to cling to a tree.

vintage1950 Mon 07-Jul-25 09:40:17

Horrible news from Texas. Hoping that some more survivors will be found although it doesn't seem likely. Those poor children!

David49 Mon 07-Jul-25 09:46:08

Similar to the Barcelona flood you can only call them “acts of god”, an earthquake would be the same type of disaster. All the authorities can do is put whatever resources they have into the rescue and recovery.
Often roads and bridges are damaged so access is very difficult and communications may well be very limited, Barcelona had a warning system, but it relied on mobile phone system but power cuts delayed the warnings. In the case of a hurricane you may, have several days to prepare, you won’t in a flash flood situation.
