Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

Calling them 'acts of god' wilfully ignores the fact that they are strongly correlated to climate change, which is an entirely human manufactured phenomenon.

Why would God want 82 people to die, including innocent children. Dismissing this to a simple act of God overlooks the steps that need be taken to stop this from happening again.

Extreme drought due to rising temperatures levels due to climate change and the fact that the taxpayers there refuse to raise taxes to pay for an adequate warning system are all man made issues.

Those camps where thousands of children and families were camping likely did not have cell service, nor do they have broad wifi. These people were sitting ducks. It was 4th of July weekend, so camps were at max capacity.

Geologically, the Texas Hill Country has a layer of limestone under the soil. Large amount of water are unable to be absorbed in the ground because of that layer. Because of this, flash floods are common in this area to begin with, though not to this degree. Common flash floods lead to warning fatigue, causing people to not take these warning as seriously when they do get them.

Let's also take into account that Trump's policies meant that several key positions at the National Weather Service offices in that area were vacant, meaning less eyes on what was happening.

I saw this morning that 82 people have died and 10 girls are still missing from Camp Mystic. It is a horrible tragedy, and I hope that these families find some type of peace as they begin to heal. Their lives will never again be the same.

I also hope that the county and state governments, and voters, take the need for a warning system seriously and take steps to make it happen no matter the cost so that something like this never happens again.

Would god want 50,000+ to die in Palestine or 50m in WW2.

Climate change is something that you and I are contributing to but have no control over where a disaster will happen, before we begin to cure climate change you and I are going to have to give up much of what we take for granted.

It’s not going to happen.

imaround Mon 07-Jul-25 22:52:43

I am not sure exactly what point you are trying to make.

It doesn't matter if a person believes in climate change science, the fact is these are not unprecedented. Texas officials knew the warning system was a problem. A bill was presented to the legislature to fund grants for counties to improve their warning systems and it was voted down in the legislature. Now those same people who voted for it regret that vote.

Unfortunately, the death toll has increased as they are recovering more people today. 95 people have been killed, including 27 girls and camp counselors from Camp Mystic.

Dictators going to dictate I guess. Sigh.

He has told Brazil that if they don't stop the "witch hunt" trial of the man who tried a coup against the Government, he would issue tariffs at 50%

Brazil responded as expected, basically saying go ahead and any reciprocal tariffs will hurt Americans more.

They are forcing out Senior Agents at the FBI and replacing them with loyalists.

The same thing is happening at all government agencies, including ICE. Who now has a budget larger than the entire US Marines.

Massive police state.

I was very troubled by the spectacle of Netanyahu (an alleged war criminal) at dinner in the White House handing Trump a copy of a letter which proposes Trump for the peace price.

We have all fallen down the hole with Alice in Wonderland.

Will this insanity never cease!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 10-Jul-25 08:18:57

It sits alongside letters from the Pakistan military and the president of the Congo.

Iam64 Thu 10-Jul-25 08:21:55

Whitewave - it’s hard to believe what’s happening when Netanyahu recommends Trump for the Nobel Peace prize. When Trump appeared at first, claiming any criticism was based on fake news, who knew we’d end up with real live fake or distorted news being presented as truth

Good old California! It may be the last bastion of democracy in the US.

Meantime, here in Good Old Britain, we can get arrested for supporting Palestinians in a public place.

But it's good for one's own personal psychology (or what some would call your soul) to do what you can to be frugal within reason. No need for a hair shirt, just eat less a little meat and a little less dairy.

Caleo Thu 10-Jul-25 10:18:31

Whilewavemark, let's hope the insanity will cease. Are there signs that humans can retain fellow feelings even while the political right wing forges ahead?

Let's list the signs!

PoliticsNerd Thu 10-Jul-25 10:52:10

Of course many will hate what is happening, but as in Germany pre WW2 people are afraid for their community, their family and themselves.

Project 2025 took this into account and Trump et al are following the plan step by step. What people don't seem to see is that in ‘Resolute 1850’ Reform UK Ltd’s have a MAGA plan to turn Britain into Little America!

That’s exactly why there is no solution to climate change, we want to hang onto our lifestyle and the developing world want to improve theirs.
To make a difference we have to give up travel and consume less we have become very decadent, we don’t need all the modern lifestyle, we managed 60 yrs ago without it, we could now.
But we won’t!.

Caleo Thu 10-Jul-25 11:41:58

David, do you think that is what shouls be preached in churches? Maybe is it!

But how to reach the wider audience who may be seeking how to live a good life but belong to no religion? Like me for instance.

Frankly - given the violence around the world I don’t think having a faith particularly qualifies you for anything.

David49 Thu 10-Jul-25 15:29:52

If it’s preached in churches it’s not going to reach many in the UK is it, in reality we all know the message, we will eat less meat, recycle some bottles and feel good about it but that’s it.
We don’t Travel overseas less, we spend our cash on bigger cars and bigger houses, and ask someone else to make sacrifices.

Caleo Thu 10-Jul-25 18:11:04

Religion used to create a feeling of fellowship and cooperation. Or so we are told.

For most of us that bird has flown .
Here in Derby the local mosque hosted a visit from some neighbours who , like myself ,were not Muslim, nor any other faith. The Muslims we met at the mosque were welcoming, non-judgmental, and informative , and they put on a great display of photos of wild life and growing things as examples of Allah's bounty . The bounty of nature is an idea people everywhere can share regardless of religious heritage or ethnicity.

Totally untrue.
How can posters take your comments seriously when you come out with such things.
Supporting the group Action Palestine in a public place is the only way you could be arrested. Now deemed a terrorist group as they have behaved so badly in the past and recently put two planes out of action at Brize Norton.
A peaceful protesting group they ain’t.

Oreo Thu 10-Jul-25 18:29:00

Maybe become a Buddist Caleo🤔

Caleo Thu 10-Jul-25 18:35:34

OMG ! They painted two aeroplanes red at Brize Norton! What a catastrophe ! So much worse than starving people to death or shooting them to death when they go to get some food.

Have you no sense of proportion

It's not the fact that they painted the aeroplanes - it's the fact that they wanted to do this and were able to do so.
And they are so dense they never even thought they could be the planes that might have taken aid to Gaza to save lives.

Casdon Thu 10-Jul-25 19:10:31

Isn’t red the peace colour for aircraft? I see red helicopters very regularly on the Beacons, rescuing people.
