Another worrying thing is, too, that whilst all this is happening in the USA and could escalate, what could happen in the rest of the world?
A lot of worrying unpredictables, yes. One man can cause so much - 😡😡😡😡

Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.
The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:
I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

There is live feed on the BBC looking at what is going on in LA.
It was always a matter of time. Ghastly, predictable. The courage of those standing up to him.
Honestly, it looks ridiculous. This is just performative.
It will all fade away in a day or two.
Sounds like they are putting 500 Marines on ready to deploy in California.
It is blatantly against the Posse Comitatus Act.

I had to get caught up in the news, I was confused at how we got to the point of the Marines being put in standby.
Apparently after the national guard arrived, things escalated. They are firing rubber bullets into the crowds. An Australian journalist was hit by one.
Trumps rhetoric on this is dangerous. If those Marines deploy, something very bad is going to happen, none the least of which will be that every single one of them will be in violation of their oath to the Constitution. After that they are just mercenaries in my opinion.
Next year it will be 250 years since the War of Independence when the American colonists kicked out the Brits because they resented being dictated to by a parliament and a King 3,500 miles away.
Now they have a king once again.
And they democratically voted him in.
Make is make sense right windmill?

Gosh, that's optimistic. And naive.
No neither really, just wishful thinking.
But when looking at the footage, you have to ask yourself what police and military plus other nefarious “militia” - all armed to the teeth are doing facing a few hundred people which is nothing more than any country sees any day of the week.
It is certainly not Jan 6th - when Trump refused to help the police in their actions.
It is pathetic.
That is why I think it is performative.
The protesters need to rethink their strategy. Don’t do the obvious, because that is what Trump is prepared for.
Heart goes out to those people, I saw the brutality meted out. This will be Trumps undoing. It's not tge way to treat people. If there are illegals do it properly.
There will be a law that says if illegal, they and their children can be deported.
Whitewave you seem to dismiss the enormity of this. Those few hundred people had family members taken from them, children, is that perforative? It's cruel, violent and totally over the top and unnecessary . If someone tried to take my child, sibling I would be scared and fight for them. Especially when you know where they end up.
I fear for the USA under trump. In just a few short months they have become a pariah nation with no redeeming features.
No I’m really not. I understand the implication all too well, but I am really not prepared to give Trump the reaction he is hoping for.
He is a pathetic individual who if allowed will be the downfall of the USA which will inevitably spread to the world.
I have absolutely no doubt that this has been planned, along with all the show of the military etc over a number of years, and I refuse to react the way he is hoping people will do.
The politicians need to stop this now, and through the courts as I read that what Trump is doing is illegal. If the opposition can’t get its act together - well - what is there to say?
If I was a young American or even a less ancient one, you would see me on the streets, but I’m not sure that is the cleverest thing to do, because it is playing into trumps hands.

Native Americans wandered over from Asia and what is now Russia via a land bridge!
So SOME people believe. There are many theories about how the different groups of original settlers came to be in America.
However, it does appear to be true that later settlers took land by force or false promises from the pre-existing population. Many Americans, not a race that generally looks outside itself, now accept this.

PoliticsNerd What rubbish about GrannyGravy13 and extremist views, I actually laughed when I read it.Have you ever met anyone with real extremist views I wonder. If you had you would know the difference.
Yes, I have met such prople from many nationalities.
I am happy to admit I'm wrong and apologise, if I have picked up on the wrong "Granny", but the instant belief in what newly met American's said (presumably because it met their own bias) made me think it was one "Granny" in particular.
People!
I don't see why it is of import if people wandered over.
They wandered over and made the land their home.
Then immigrants came and made problems. Now the immigrants are rounding up other immigrants.
Dare say somebody will be happy to argue with me and put me right any minute now.
Economically and politically the worst thing I can imagine is that America splits into individual states (countries).
There were many on the right who have tried to split the EU with outside blocks from both right and left trying to "help" this happen in order to increase their own political and economic power. If America were to split up the largest blocks, economically and politically, would then be Russia and China.
The current attempt by Trump to illegally use powers he doesn't have against the State of California will have the leaders of both those blocks rubbing their hands in glee.

It isn't important lafergar. It's nice to have anything used as an argument factually correct though.

I don’t like the sound of masked men, is this actually true?
If it’s done properly I have no objections to migrants who are probably illegally there being taken off the streets to be questioned and perhaps deported. We deport people here in the UK.We are abroad at the moment.
DH has just had a conversation with an American family on this very subject.
Their view is ^if anyone is in America illegally, then they should be removed pretty damn quick^
This plays into the hands of people like Trump. People are all for waiving rules and coming down heavy on some members of society because they think that those things could never happen to them. Until they do. An example being all the people in this country who think we should leave the ECHR because they themselves will never need the protection it gives them
.
I am very conflicted tbh.
It seems to me that protesting will only make things worse, especially if the protests spread, which I think is very likely, but if you don’t, it will only get worse.
I guess if I had the choice I would go down fighting.
Friends from LA are just terrified. Husband is Moroccan with Green card and job in LA, has had to return to Morocco as father died suddenly. They are so worried he may have trouble getting back home, despite all his papers, etc, being in order. He is brown and arab looking. It's just awful.
Now the immigrants are rounding up other immigrants.
That's the irony!

You can be white and Welsh and still be put in chains and deported because you misunderstood the terms of your visa.
