Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

That's awful Claremont who in their worse nightmare could have foreseen this happening 'in the land of the free'.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

I agree politicsnerd. It completely misses the point of what is happening in LA. This is the start of a revolution.

Steven Miller is calling it an insurrection. That is dangerous. They are tamping down the right to protest. They are purging the government and replacing them with loyalists. They are trying to restrict free speech.

We are going no where but down before this is over. It will spread.

Here is the scariest part, barely anyone in the US knew this was happening. Even people in other parts of California had no idea what was going on. Barely any news coverage.

The seeds of this were sown on January 6 2021.. and since then Trump has fanned the flames.

Yet again , he's a megalomaniac hellbent on running America into the ground. Putin couldn't do a better job.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 11:15:05

So far I’ve heard these arguments which make sense to me.

Trump is cultivating this violence to take attention away from the economy tanking as a result of his policies.

Trump hates Gavin Newson, as he is intending to run in the next presidential election.

Or Trump simply believes that he can do what he likes when he likes - he is a fascist dictator.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 11:16:47

What happens if it spreads to NYC?

MaizieD Mon 09-Jun-25 11:18:24

California has the 5th largest economy in the world. It votes Democrat. It is home to celebrities who make no bones about criticising Trump. Apparently Trump has no love for California.

I think he would like to crush California...

These riots started because Border Force in the US raided businesses looking for illegal migrants, this is exactly what Border Force do in the UK. The UK also restricts economic migrants from coming here from overseas they have to be the workers we need

Has anyone any evidence of the National Guard actually getting involved in riot control, the images I have see they are guarding government buildings and other areas, they are dressed in Camouflage uniform it’s the police that are dressed in black wearing body armour that are in the front line.

I understand the Democrats not liking being usurped in this way but it’s their policy of condoning illegal migration that has caused the problem. The US is in exactly the same position as the UK we want to control migration, is anyone going to say we should have an open doo to economic migrants?.

Terric wrote

"Is this someone you would want as a leader of your Country. I cannot imagine that being the case."

In UK we've had our share of leaders who shamed their title and our country. The difference between us is when that happens, our political system offers Parliament, or the Government, and the electorate; damage limitation' ways to get rid of the idiot.

"All other world leaders sit there and tolerate the circus around him.."

World leaders have now got the message about what happens in the White House circus. From now on, I doubt many will agree to meet Trump in USA.

Has anyone any evidence of the National Guard actually getting involved in riot control, the images I have see they are guarding government buildings and other areas, they are dressed in Camouflage uniform it’s the police that are dressed in black wearing body armour that are in the front line.

There's a clip circulating on social media of an Australian reporter being fired at (rubber bullets) by a National guardsman. It hit her on the leg. One commenter suggested that he was firing at the camera, not the reporter, but either way, why fire at the press? She wasn't rioting, she was reporting a piece to camera. Nor was there any 'rioting' in the vicinity.

If you look at the video again the shooter has Police on the tunic.

Maremia Mon 09-Jun-25 15:07:55

As was suggested/hoped for upthread, Gavin Newsom has submitted a lawsuit to challenge Trump's federalizing of the California national guard without the state's consent. In the Guardian onlune just now.

I already answered this question. Multiple times.

They are in violation of the constitution in what they are doing. It is illegal. They are rounding up legal migrants and citizens too.

You think it is OK for the government to break the law and violate the rights of legal migrants and citizens? You think it is ok to enter homes and businesses without a warrant? You think it is OK for Trump to usurp the 10th Amendment to take control of California's National Guard?

That is scary.

loopyloo Mon 09-Jun-25 15:25:29

Do you think California will split from the Union?

Smileless2012 Mon 09-Jun-25 15:29:25

Could they do so?

Here is video of the National Guard joining local police in firing on crowds.

Maremia Mon 09-Jun-25 15:59:43

Yes, it is all scary.

The BBC has a good video of one of the journalists being shot with a rubber bullet.

She was obviously press, there was no danger around her or directed towards the man that shot her.

The article itself is about another journalist shot in the leg. He says he was clearly identified as press as well.

www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg7vzrj6g3o

Scroll to the bottom for the video.

I am going to see if I can find a link to the video of police hitting a protestor on the ground with sticks. It is disgusting.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 16:49:09

The video of a mother being violently arrested with her young child looking on gets me. Presumably they left the child?

Trump appears to be only hitting Democrat areas. Other Republican areas with a large Latino population is being left alone. We will see if this continues.

This is excessive force.

Could they do so?

As they have the 5th largest economy in the world and the state is larger than many countries, in theoretical terms they could survive as an independent entity.

I seem to recall that when the Southern States attempted to secede from the Union in the 19th C it caused a civil war...

MaizieD Mon 09-Jun-25 16:55:54

Apologies, David for passing misinformation.

Here is Trump himself saying he hopes Blue States disappear off the map.

youtu.be/zCsBAxBSaXI?si=QluLtyySbMxezlQL

His and Musks DOGE have targeted Blue States for funding cuts.

Here he is saying he wants to withhold funding for parts of California.

www.cnn.com/2025/06/06/politics/trump-california-federal-funding

He signed some memo directing ICE to target so called Sanctuary Cities.

He is absolutely targeting Blue States. He needs to remember, though, that the blue states pay in a whole lot more money then red states do.

It’s my understanding of the situation too, once all the anger and confusion is stripped away.
The National Guard aren’t there to attack or arrest civilians but to protect ICE and the buildings.
Whether it was neccessary to call them in is another matter and one which will be uncomfortable for Newsom as it suggests he’s failing at his job.
Now of course it’s any excuse will do to enjoy a bit of anarchy.
The original protesters have their ranks swollen by others who I bet don’t give two hoots about illegal migrant workers.
Eventually they’ll get tired and go home.
We have raids on shops and various businesses here to do the exact same thing, catch illegal migrant workers and those caught up in the slave trade.
